4 Digit Code for Grade Checks: (You will only get this from me ONCE!)

Modoc High School Absolutes: (1) Be prepared for class; (2) No headphones in the hallways. Per MHS Student Handbook, all parties involved in cheating will receive an automatic “F” on the assignment and a U in citizenship. Along with the guidelines stated in the MHS Student Handbook, students in Mrs. Royce’s class are expected to honor the following rules and expectations. Some exceptions may apply (food may be allowed sometimes, headphones may be allowed to use as a tool, etc.), but it’s up to Mrs. Royce to decide when that happens. Additional behavior expectations will be determined when we develop a social contract together a little later.

Behavior Expectations:

NO FOOD OR DRINK (other than water)

Come to class PREPARED!!!

Follow directions immediately.

Participate the ENTIRE period.

Use your manners.

Be RESPECTFUL & RESPONSIBLE.

♦ Come to class every day. Math builds on itself like a story. Missing something can have negative consequences for a long time.

Mathematical Expectations (How to be an AMAZING math student):

♦ Always do all of your homework. Math skills are like basketball skills or baseball skills. You can be out of practice. The more you practice, the better, faster, and more accurate you will be. This will make it easier to learn new, harder things. You'll also remember it for longer and will perform better under pressure, such as on a quiz or test.

♦ Check your answers (if given) as you do your homework. If you get a question wrong, then go back and solve it until you get it right. Be sure you understand what your mistake was.

♦ Always show your work. Organized work leads to organized thinking. Plus, if you get a question wrong, you can go back and see why.

♦ Be an active participant in class every day. You are expected to share your ideas and contribute to class and team discussions. You are expected to ask questions if you do not understand a problem or a set of directions.

♦ Website: Resources:

http://www.modocmath.weebly.com/ Important documents, announcements, and links are located here. Check this site often for helpful resources!

♦ Grades: https://parent-net.modoc.k12.ca.us It is expected that you use this resource to check your grades often. Please address any grade book concerns that you have respectfully and immediately. Grades will be posted periodically in class. You must know your 4-digit student id. # to check your grades in class. I will give you this number once, at the beginning of the year, and that is all.

♦ Remind: Want to receive announcements and reminders on your phone via text message, without giving out your phone number? Simply text @modocstats to 81010. The Remind program will then add you to my A.P. Statistics class list. PARENTS: FEEL FREE TO DO THIS AS WELL!

This course syllabus should be kept in the

FRONT of your binder, should

NEVER be thrown away, and should be

reviewed before asking about any

class business.

A.P. Statistics Mrs. Royce 2015-2016 Course Syllabus Modoc High School

Pages 7 & 8 are DUE WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 31st! 3

A.P. Statistics Course Description:

♦ Prerequisites: C or better in Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II ♦ A.P. Statistics is the high school equivalent of a one semester, introductory college statistics course. In

this course, students develop strategies for collecting, organizing, analyzing, and drawing conclusions from data. Students design, administer, and tabulate results from surveys and experiments. Probability and simulations aid students in constructing models from chance phenomena. Sampling distributions provide the logical structure for confidence intervals and hypothesis tests. Students use a TI-83/84 graphing calculator, and Web-based java applets to investigate statistical concepts. To develop effective statistical communication skills, students are required to prepare frequent written and oral analyses of real data. If a student takes the A.P. Statistics exam in May and obtains a score of 4 or 5, he/she may receive college credit for the course (some colleges also accept a score of 3).

♦ The following qualities will be valuable to you in this course: Mathematical Understanding: Understanding is a prerequisite to remembering, connecting, and using mathematics. Skill Proficiency: Skills are necessary to succeed at the mathematical tasks that students will encounter in this course

and beyond. Problem Solving: Students need to learn to use what they know and think logically about problems to devise

effective strategies to find solutions. This course will not be about just getting right answers, which people can get by cheating. Instead, I’ll be interested in your ability to figure things out and your willingness to struggle until you find the right answer. NEVER GIVE UP!

Communication: Students need to be able to use mathematical language and talk and write about their ideas effectively.

Justification: Students should be able to give logical arguments to defend their reasoning both orally and in writing. Mastery over Time: I expect students to continue to build broader and deeper understanding of the ideas in this

course as the year progresses. Multiple Ways of Seeing: I value breadth of thinking. Students should seek, find, hear, and understand multiple ways

to think about a given mathematical task. Effective Team Work: In order to achieve many of the above-mentioned goals, students need to work together.

They need practice talking about mathematics and building deeper understanding by listening to the reasoning of other students. Therefore, students will be expected to work cooperatively throughout this entire course.

Growth Mindset: Remove the phrase, “I’m just not a math person” from your vocabulary. Don’t use that as an excuse to fail. Our brains can grow in different areas as we practice them more and more. Try saying, “I’m not a math person YET” and do what you need to do to improve your math skills.

REQUIRED MATERIALS 1. Pencil and eraser (Pens may NOT be used.) 2. 3-Ring Binder with the following dividers:

1. Notes 2. Assignments 3. Tests/Quizzes

It’s not always easy to understand everything in math classes right away. I understand this and hope you catch my attention as soon as something gets confusing! If you have a question about something

Improving your Understanding of A.P. Statistics Concepts:

during a lesson I’m teaching, please raise your hand and ask about it. The sooner you ask questions, the less likely you are to fall behind. If you need some one-on-one help, please feel free to come in before school, at lunch, or after school (check the white board in the Class Business corner). Or, find a friend who understands what you don’t and do your homework or study for tests together. Finally, don’t be afraid to look around for some resources

. Try using your textbook for help, or visit my website and go to the “Helpful Websites” page to see if you can find something helpful. Whatever you do, don’t use “I just don’t get it” as an excuse!

Grading Policy:

Category % of Grade Description

Tests & Quizzes 50%

* Quizzes will be given periodically to assess students’ understanding and application of previously learned topics. Quizzes may be unannounced or will be announced about one-two days before they are given. * A test will be given after the completion of each unit. The test may be multiple choice, short answer, a Performance Task, or a combination of these. * Quizzes and Tests may be retaken (during the same quarter they were given) for a better grade. The deadline for retakes will be the end of each quarter. ALL INCORRECT PROBLEMS MUST

1. Were you surprised by your grade? Why or why not?

BE CORRECTED IN A DIFFERENT COLOR!!! For quizzes, simply set an appointment with Mrs. Royce to retake the quiz. For tests, please complete the following reflection on a separate piece of paper and attach it to your original test prior to coming in for a retake.

2. What were the specific mistakes you made on the test? 3. What could you have done differently to prepare for the test the first time? 4. What have you done to prepare for the retake of this test?

Assign-ments 20%

Homework is essential for supporting the course curriculum and will be assigned nearly every day. Unless otherwise stated, homework is due the next class period. You will usually be given time to start the assignment in class, and to ask questions about it in class the next day. Late work will only be accepted with Royce Rewards (see details on next page).

Each assignment must be clearly labeled with the proper heading (as shown below) in order to receive full credit.

p. 518 #1-35 odd Melissa Carter June 10, 2011 Period 3

Homework assignments will be graded according to the following rubric: FRQs: You will be assigned Free Response Questions (FRQs) during each unit. These are FRQs from past A.P. Stats exams, and will be graded according to the College Board A.P. Scoring Rubrics. You may also be required to use the scoring rubrics to score your own, and other students’ FRQs. FRQs are an essential part of the A.P. Statistics curriculum and you should become familiar with their format and scoring. All past FRQs can be found at http://apcentral.collegeboard.com/apc/members/exam/exam_questions/8357.html.

The Final Exam will be your opportunity to show off what you’ve learned over the year. The first semester Final Exam, given in December, will cover everything you should have learned over the entire first semester. The second semester Final Exam, given in June, will cover everything you should have learned over the entire year.

Citizen-ship 10%

* Periodically, I will check binders for organization of notes, assignments, tests, and quizzes (see binder requirements on the second page). Binder checks will be random, so be ready every day! No binder = zero credit! * Another part of your Citizenship grade comes from your 100 Points of Conduct: 100 Points of Conduct will be given to each student in the Participation category at the beginning of each semester. Points will be lost in the event of misconduct (failing to participate in a given task, causing an interruption to the learning environment, disrespect for self, teacher, or other students, etc.). A formal conference between parents, student, and teacher will be arranged if all Points of Conduct are lost.

The Daily Routine in Mrs. Royce’s A.P. Statistics Class:

♦ We work from BELL TO BELL in this class. So, be ready to get started AS SOON AS THE TARDY BELL RINGS and to work diligently UNTIL THE END OF CLASS BELL, and possibly a couple seconds later if necessary.

♦ Cell phones are prohibited during class and will be stored in a cell phone organizer during class time. ♦ Place your phone in the appropriate slot and be in your seat, ready to learn before the tardy bell rings.

Walking in as the bell is ringing will result in a tardy. ♦ If you were absent the day before, go straight to the Absent Students’ Corner and pick up any handouts that

may be there with your name on them. Then, immediately get started by following the directions on the board.

♦ If you weren’t absent the day before, immediately get started by following the directions on the board. The directions on the board will usually lead you to complete a warm-up that relates to the previous lesson, or

gets you ready for the next lesson. This is a critical time for you to get into math-mode, and for Mrs. Royce to complete class business. Do not wait for Mrs. Royce to tell you to get started. START IMMEDIATELY.

♦ After the warm-up, we’ll go over homework questions. There is a place on the white board where you can write the problem number you struggled with. Please do this before class so that Mrs. Royce can prepare to answer your questions while you work on your warm-up.

♦ After all this, we’ll start the lesson, which may include new material or a review of older material. Concepts will be taught via direct instruction, videos, and/or investigations.

Be ready to take plenty of Cornell Notes, and to maintain an organized Interactive Notebook for each unit of study.

♦ After the lesson, you will usually be given time to start your assignment. ♦ Some sort of closure will indicate that it’s time to go – an exit ticket, a summary of what you’ve learned, a

quick discussion, etc. ♦ You may leave after Mrs. Royce says, “Do all things with love.” In other words, the bell does NOT excuse

you from class, Mrs. Royce does.

Attendance/Tardy Policy/What To Do When You’re Absent:

Students are expected to attend class on a regular basis. However, should a student be tardy or absent, he/she is responsible for any material that was covered during their absence and/or tardy (quizzes, tests, assignments, binder checks, etc.). Mrs. Royce has set up plenty of options for you to find out what you missed. Please use these resources and come in for extra help if necessary. Per School Board policy, a student has as many days as he/she is absent to make up work that was missed.

♦ If you know that you’ll be absent, please please please get your work before

If you’re home sick, you can call the front office (233-7201 ext. 405) and

you go.

request homework

. I’ll send it to the office and your parents can pick it up at the end of the day. Please don’t request homework unless you’re ACTUALLY going to do it!

Always always always check the Absent Students’ Corner

♦ Check the daily log:

when you return to pick up any handouts you missed, or to find the homework assignments written on Mrs. Royce’s calendar that’s over there.

http://bit.ly/statsdailylog often, and sign up for Remind in order to stay up to date.

Modoc High School’s tardy policy will be strictly enforced in this class. Two or more unexcused tardies will result in a lunch detention. The fourth unexcused tardy will result in a U in citizenship.

Royce Rewards (Late Homework):

Late work is not accepted. However, I understand that “life happens.” Each semester, each student will receive 5 Royce Rewards. If a student is unable to turn in an assignment on time, he/she may use 1 Royce Reward to excuse this assignment from being late. A Royce Reward is not a free homework pass. The assignment must still be completed to receive a grade. The final deadline for late assignments, with the use of a Royce Reward is the day of that particular unit test. If any Royce Rewards remain at the end of the semester, it may be turned in for extra credit.

Leaving the Room

If you must leave to use the restroom, or for any other reason, you must ask Mrs. Royce for permission, SIGN OUT and take the hall pass. Only one student may be out of the room at a time. Mrs. Royce is responsible for you while you are in her class, so she must know where you are at all times. The sign-out sheet may be used to determine whether or not a student is using class time wisely.

Procedures for turning in papers, checking out pencils, and checking out calculators

• Turn papers in to the box by the north door of the classroom. • Check out a pencil by asking politely for one, and writing your name on the white board (to the left of the Active Board).

RETURN THE PENCIL AND ERASE YOUR NAME AT THE END OF THE PERIOD. • Check out a calculator (If and only if you’ve turned in a Calculator Checkout form – see p. 2) by politely asking for

one, and writing your name next to the calculator number on the white board (to the left of the Active Board).

Final Thoughts & Words of Wisdom

• You must be self-motivated, disciplined, willing to think critically, and willing to work with others to succeed in this course.

• Do not fall behind; otherwise, you may struggle to catch up for the rest of the year.

• Come to class regularly and complete all assignments.

• Ask questions and immediately seek help when you need it.

• Read and listen to directions carefully.

• STUDY, STUDY, STUDY!

• USE YOUR RESOURCES!

bulletin board with quotes from former students!
