NEAR FIELD COMMUNICATION

• NFC is a contactless, Wi-Fi-lite style tech that could already be in your smartphone.

• Essentially, NFC electronically connects us to our bank accounts.

• It is a short-ranged, low power wireless link evolved from RFID technology that can transfer small amounts of data between devices.

• It does not use Bluetooth, which reduces drain on cell phone batteries

• Retail can use NFC to identify your account (personal preferences, shopping habits, and even your most frequently travelled route home) and take payment through apps on your phone.

• Passive NFC 'tags' on posters, in shops and on trains could contain a web address, a discount voucher, a map or a bus timetable that passers-by could touch their phones on to receive – or to instantly pay for absolutely anything.

NFC TAGS

• NFC tags are essentially paper-thin circuits that store data which can then be read by (or even overwritten) by an NFC-equipped device, like a smartphone.

• NFC tags can be placed almost anywhere, and can store all types of data.• For instance, NFC tags could be placed on walls,

embedded in paper, built into products, and much more.• NFC Tags could replace QR codes, provide greater product

information at point-sale retailers, and replace such things as patient wristbands used by hospitals.

• You program these little tiles with the free application.• Some examples of what is possible – program your phone settings

for work or home; update your status on social media; or even make phone calls or send text messages automatically. Once you’ve programmed the tile – put it in a convenient place,  tap your phone to the TecTile, and watch it do its stuff!

LG NFC-ENABLED APPLIANCES

• LG’s home appliances division has introduced its first NFC functionality, putting NFC tags on refrigerators, ovens, and washer and dryers.

• Users can tap to register the appliances for warranty and to add them to LG’s Smart Control Android app.

• Within the app, consumers could remotely adjust controls on the smart appliances, such as setting a cooking mode on the oven, and get information from them, such as inventor of items in the refrigerator.

MCPARTY RUN IN-STORE APP

• Kids download the McParty Run app to their smartphones and use NFC enabled tables to play games on their phone in-store.

• Drives in-store engagement, potentially driving in-store traffic and higher revenues.

• Creates brand engagement with children - leading to brand loyalty.

GEOFENCING

• Geofencing is a virtual field around any location set to deliver a personalized marketing message to a consumer when they are inside.

• Good for:• Word of mouth marketing, which is

organic though automatic social media check ins.

• Builds relationships between brands and customers by providing loyalty discounts and incentives to visit.

• Popular third party apps like Retail-me-not can provide customer incentives to nearby app users to increase foot traffic.

ASPLUNDH TREE EXPERT CO.

• Asplundh uses Geofencing to keep watch over company property and analyze what each job site requires in terms of manpower and time required.

• In trucking, the company uses Geofencing to monitor its trucks and to optimize routes.

• They also use Geofencing in place of time clock system to track employee hours.

APPLE

• Apple has successfully filed patents to use geofencing to control phones.

• For instance, the geofencing technology could be used to silence phones in movie theaters, prevent wireless communications in boardrooms, turn off cameras during jury trials, or shutdown cell phone communications within a airport terminal if security fears a terrorist attack.

NFC LIMITATIONS

• Adapting the technology and educating consumers

• Apple is resisting the technology to promote their own iBeacon.

• NFC could provide a backdoor for hackers

• NFC remains cost prohibitive for small companies

• “According to Wired Magazine, by 2016 only 1/4 of Americans will have NFC smartphones. Unfortunately this is not enough incentive for most businesses to incorporate NFC. ”

Gottipati, H. “With iBeacon, Apple is going to dump on NFC and embrace the internet of things.” Gigaom. 9/10/2013.Retrieved from: http://gigaom.com/2013/09/10/with-ibeacon-apple-is-going-to-dump-on-nfc-and-embrace-the-internet-of-things/Photo retrieved from: http://gigaom.com/2013/09/10/with-ibeacon-apple-is-going-to-dump-on-nfc-and-embrace-the-internet-of-things/

GEOFENCING LIMITATIONS

• “Creep factor,” consumers can feel as if they are being followed.

• More limited to traditional brick and mortar stores.

• Apple patent- oppressive and criminal possibilities

Whittaker, Z. “Apple patent could remotely disable protesters’ phone cameras.” ZDNet. 9/2/2012. Retrieved From:http://www.zdnet.com/apple-patent-could-remotely-disable-protesters-phone-cameras-7000003640/

SOLUTIONS

NFC

• Educate consumers on benefits

• Establishing device industry standards and including NFC with all smartphones

• Increased security to protect user data

• Development cost should reduce as technology spreads

Geofencing

• “Creep factor” will dissipate with wider adoption of technology

• Online retail could use NFC in local marketing campaigns to steer customers away from brick and mortar stores.

• Hackers, activists, journalists, and others may find ways to overcome Apple’s new technology.
