TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION

The brake discs are manufactured in a highly durable, heat-resistant alloy with excellent heat transfer ability that enables the discs to absorb a great deal of brake energy with high intensity. The brake discs are available in two main versions: low-weight, ventilated disc with air channels, or a heavy duty, solid-cast disc.

The brake disc is mounted onto the hub via a Volvo patented, spline fitting with a flexible attachment. This allows the brake disc to expand symmetrically both in the axial and radial direction, which increases its service life and minimizes the risk of cracking. The system is robust and can withstand high temperatures. The design also enables the entire surface of the brake disc to be in contact with the brake pad, regardless of the disc’s temperature. The hub design with spline attachment also acts as a heat barrier toward the wheelbase, which reduces the risk of overheating.

On today’s Volvo Trucks, a pneumatic system is used. The engine powers a compressor that generates compressed air. When the driver applies the brake pedal air is sent to the brake actuators which generate force which is turned into brake torque through the brakes.
