South Mecklenburg High School Re-Creation

The high school called South Mecklenburg (also called South Meck) has team work and

spirit associated with the institution. In the original paper, which involved picking a genre in

class to represent, there was the diversity among peers, academic progression, and teamwork

through sports that were cited as main subjects. These categories were all extremely broad and

each one creates a different depiction of what the school is. The subject most definitely needed to

be narrowed down and after looking closely at the paper, I made my decision on the view I

wanted to portray. This recreation focused on the teamwork and spirit through sports which is

represented by my new genre, a South Mecklenburg soccer jersey.

The soccer jersey inspires spirit and connection to the specific school and team. The

community in the surrounding area is also influenced by the colors and spirit connected to the

sports jersey. The appeal of the colors and interest in sports can be a big plus for interest in the

jersey and ultimately attending the sports functions. By making this genre into a South Meck

sports jersey, it interconnects all sports fans and players at the school, as well as in the area.

Through this genre I want to convey the school by the involvement of the students in sport

activities, and how the sports teams represent the school across the state. These represent the

school in a way that is very important to many people. For instance some people are familiar

with a school just because of their standing in the sports and the fans that they have. The sport

jersey can also be a catalyst for developing a very appealing shirt for a playoff game or

fundraiser for a needy organization. The jersey and its coloring can be used to create funds

needed to run the schools program or for fundraising to help others in the community for which

the school serves. Sometimes for a profit companies are willing to create a jersey (based on the

original product) that will help provide needed funds for those less fortunate in the community.

One example is the Breast Cancer Society and their efforts to raise awareness by putting their

logo on local team jerseys.

The recreation of my genre seems like a easy task, making a jersey to represent the

school but it is extremely surprising what it takes to create a quality product. Originally my first

instinct was to get a simple white shirt and write on the numbers along with the name of my

school. The white T-shirt color with the red letters is worn during the South Meck home games.

All the students and faculty know when the jersey is on the players that day as they walk through

the school, the game is on for the evening. Also on the shirt is the nickname of the school which

is on the real jerseys. South Meck, and the adidas stripes down the side which indicate that the

school is sponsored by that company. The finished product is great and represents the school

well. This jersey gives an authentic feel for the fan and can serve as an awesome product for the

South Meck.

From this genre of a sports jersey, you can expect great spirit to be abounding from the

the team, students, faculty and fans. One thing that you will get a vast amount of is the passion

of the school from players and the fans that they attract, which can be students and outside

supporters. Some specific examples consist of how the students attend pre-game events to rally

everyone up for the games. There are spirit events that the students enjoy before many big home

games. These are heavily attended and a great social event that brings the school together. Also,

even people who do not have kids and live in the surrounding neighborhoods enjoy coming to

the sports events while cheering us on. Many people who live around the area support the school

as much as the people involved in the school. The team jerseys also create publicity for the

school and team. Sometimes when people will see me wearing a soccer jersey they will ask when

the next game is or how the team is doing. The jerseys do a lot for the total image and feeling of

the team and community. It is amazing how much the color of the jerseys, and the actual team

jerseys, can seem to ignite the crowd with excitement when they are worn in a large crowd of

supporters. At South Meck we have cheers that our Super Fans Club has developed for all the

teams and it is an important part of our spirit that develops around the team jerseys and specific

sport.

Another thing that this form of genre presents is the recognition across the county, city,

and even state, through the sports teams. Many high schools throughout North Carolina are

involved with sports and they are competitive. When they play any team from South

Mecklenburg they know whether they have more or less skill, the competition will be a battle

and that South Mecklenburg will be supported. For instance in some cases in away sports

matches South Mecklenburg will be represented with more fans than the home teams! Also, a

good way that brought out our school to the other schools is our performance in tournaments. I

was lucky enough to be a part of the soccer team which was around to get to the quarter finals in

the state playoffs 3 out of our 4 years. Our football and baseball teams did well in the state

playoffs as well. The basketball team was not the best on the court but was still notorious for the

overwhelming support from the fans. When our soccer team at South Meck went into the quarter

finals of the state playoffs when I was a senior, our jerseys were the best on the field. The fans

from South Meck sported our colors and our jerseys and cheered us on.

When you look at the re-creation of the high school genre to a sports jersey, there are

some different things that are acquired out of this side of the genre. Previously when South

Mecklenburg was represented as a high school there were many categories that it contained and

that people associated with it. The main categories included things such as academics, diversity,

and sports. When you look at the sports jersey, the main focus has been narrowed down to

mainly sports. This side of the genre leaves out some of the things in the school, but the focus is

something that many people love and can relate to. This statement is especially true at South

Mecklenburg where sports is a huge part of the schools pride and reputation in the surrounding

area. In some ways one could consider it a disadvantage. One way is it could be interpreted as

me bending the rules by recreating the high school in this genre and some people may feel left

out if they dont participate in athletic events. But the truth is, an abundance of people who do

not actually compete in athletics support the team and give them the extra drive to win.Specifically, there have many times at South Mecklenburg where the fans have encouraged me

and my team to do better in our games. This uplifting bring teams through tough games and there

is nothing better that representing a team that one cares about.

The main purpose of the genre could be described as a way to really highlight the

phenomenal part of the school South Mecklenburg with which the school is heavily associated

with, sports. Though there are other main parts of the school, sports are a great aspect of the

school and prospers through the participation of the entire school and surrounding community.

schools look past. For example, sometimes people will flood the football games with people and

then the tennis matches will be empty. We do not have bias against sports that are not usually

majorly attended All sports are equally represented here and always have a fan section. The

South Mecklenburg sports jersey is a recreation that is created without a specific sport on it so

that it can support any sport that the school competes in.

My original text of South Mecklenburg had many core subjects such as diversity,

academics and sports, but sports was the main topic that my recreation of a sports jersey focuses

on. This genre is an area that South Mecklenburg shines in and has many positives that represent

the school well which is the reason why I chose to recreate it in this form. Many people at the

school are attracted to sports which is an advantaged to this genre. A disadvantage can be that

some people may feel left out if they do not play sports there. In response to this disadvantage, at

South Mecklenburg many people who do not play are included in the atmosphere of the fans and

support the teams heavily at sport competitions.

The sports jersey for all Sports at South Meck seems to provide a unity and spirit among

all the community in the school and surrounding area. I can sight an example that is so clear to

me in my sport of soccer. The librarian at South Meck and her son(who was in my grade at

South Meck) have always been avid soccer fans. They came to most of the games during my

four years at school and always had a soccer jersey on during the day at school. They showed

the spirit of the soccer jersey and its significance in school so well. The sports jersey and the

excitement around it are significant to the promotion and feeling for the sport.
