Unico esemplare al mondo di una corona di Re Xiongnu: veniva collocata sul colmo di un copricapo in cuoio come illustra l’immagine qui sotto. È composta da due cerchi d’oro massiccio scolpiti che terminano con una tigre, un montone e un cavallo accovacciati, mentre sul lato opposto vi è l’immagine di un lupo che azzanna una pecora.
Chiaro riferimento alla ferocia dei Xiongnu che, scelto il lupo quale loro “antenato”, colpivano mortalmente le più ricche popolazioni stanziali della Cina che avevano eretto contro di loro la Grande Muraglia.
Unique example of the crown of a Xiongnu King. It was placed on the top of a leather headpiece as shown in the illustration. Two carved solid gold circles end in the figures of a tiger, and a crouching ram and horse, whilst on the other side
is the figure of a wolf savaging a sheep. A clear reference to the ferocity of the Xiongnu who, having chosen the wolf as their ancestor, mounted aggressive raids against the settled populations of China who had erected the Great Wall against them.

“cucite” insieme con fili d’argento.

usanze funerarie della etnìa Qidan.
This silver suit contained the body of the Chen Princess. It is made up of seven parts “sewn” together with silver
thread. This precious exhibit
shows the special burial customs of the
Khitan people.

La maschera copriva il volto del marito della Principessa. Sbalzata a mezzo rilievo, zigomi lievemente pronunciati, faccia smilza, mascella sfuggente, setto nasale lungo e stretto ma narici larghe, due occhi socchiusi, labbra leggermente
dischiuse, orecchie realizzate separatamente, piccoli fori sui bordi per la cucitura sulla rete della testa. Anche le maschere d’oro o d’argento costituivano una parte importante delle tradizioni funerarie dei Qidan.
The gold mask covered the face of the Princess’s husband. We can observe the prominent cheekbones, slim face, angled jaw, long straight nose and wide nostrils, barely closed eyes, slightly parted lips, and the separately made ear
sections and the small holes along the edge of the mask allowing it to be sewn onto the head covering. Gold and silver masks were an important part of Khitan burial customs.

La corona era stata collocata sul capo della Principessa. Di forma cilindrica con due ali laterali simmetriche, a decorazioni di nuvole e fenici e sulla sommità una statuina della divinità taoista
Yuan Shi Tian Zun. Ciò testimonia che i Qidan credevano nel Taoismo.
The crown was placed on the Princess’s head. It has a cylindrical shape with two symmetrical wings at either side, and is decorated with clouds and phoenixes. The small statue of the Taoist divinity Yuan Shi Tian Zun
placed on the top is evidence of the Taoist beliefs of the Khitan.

Ad un nastro di giada magistralmente annodato sono attaccate cinque catenelle dorate dalle quali pendono altrettante preziose sculturine di giada: singolo pesce, doppio drago, doppia fenice, doppio pesce e animale mitologico.
Five gilded chains are attached to a beautifully knotted jade ribbon. Delicate jade figures hang from them: single fish, two dragons, two phoenixes, two fish and a mythological animal.

Cup with exquisite convex octagonal shape and flared rim. Within the raised edges the figures of seven sages are engraved, each with a different pose and expression.

Questi due preziosi reperti (ricostruiti nella parte lignea) sono attribuiti al grande condottiero e vengono onorati nel Mausoleo a lui dedicato a Ejan Horo, nella Mongolia Interna,
dove la tradizione popolare ritiene che Gengis Khan sia morto il 18 agosto 1227.
These two precious exhibits (the wooden sections are a reconstruction) are said to have belonged to the great leader himself, and hold a place of honour in his mausoleum at Ejan Horo, in Inner Mongolia,
where, according to popular tradition, Genghis Khan died on 18th August, 1227.
