President’s Corner

I hope that everyone is/has enjoyed this very warm, humid summer & has been busily carving away. At the June meeting we elected the following officers for next year. President: Harry Patrick Vice President George Abbott Treasurer Alison Currie Membership: Jeff O’Donnell Newsletter Editor: Susie Nettleton Website Administrator: Mardou Case Show/Competition Chair: John Currie Member at Large: Al Adaskin The September meeting is our annual “clear out the garage” sale. We have some books that have been donated to the club which we will be selling. All proceeds go to the club. Any not sold, I will see about donating them a library or other organization. We also have some of Teddy Palis’ carving tools. Among them is a Wecheer Micro Engraver & a Versa-trol burning unit with a tip. If you have “stuff” that you would like to see go to a new home, please bring it. Sadly Teddy passed away on July 16th. Calling hours will be on Aug 23rd from 4-7PM at August 23, 2018 from 4-7 PM at Michael R. Yackiw Funeral Home (1650 Empire Blvd., Webster). Attached is a link to his obituary: https://www.meaningfulfunerals.net/?action=obituaries.obit_view&CFID=fa4dd39e-d1bd-4656-9d04-2d428d45dbdf&CFTOKEN=0&o_id=5085490&fh_id=11138 The show next year is on April 6, 2019 which is only 33½ weeks away! Our goal is to increase both

the number of participants and the number of carvings. If you are a Beginner or Intermediate carver, any class project you complete can be entered into the show in the appropriate class. If you are an Advanced carver, you can enter class projects in the Bench Division. In addition, any carvings completed in the past two years are eligible provided they have not previously been entered in our show.

Club T-shirts and ball caps are still available for $10 each. Club business cards are also on hand; take some to share with folks who may be interested in carving. New members are the life blood of any club. Please talk up the club whenever possible. If you know of someone interested in woodcarving but they’re not sure what they would like to do, invite them to attend a meeting to see what we are doing. Currently we have 79 paid members. Dues are $20 per year for an individual & $25 for a family. Membership forms are on the website. Please send completed forms to Alison. If for some reason, you did not receive an updated contact list & were willing to share your contact info, please contact me & I will send you one. Remember, safety first and keep those wood chips flying and the dust collected!

Regards, Harry

I have arranged for there to be a room at the "Town of Greece Senior Center" set aside for a group of woodcarvers to do some woodcarving. The room will become available for woodcarving for the first time on Monday, September 10, 2018, from 9:30am to 11:30am. This is just to be an informal carve-in, we plan to meet every week at the same time and there are no dues, no club officers, no rules, (other than normal safety, and clean up any mess you make). We can always have classes if people would like that. Everyone is invited. The only thing the Center wants is, we are excepting to all who are interested in carving and we leave our door ajar so people can check us out and see what we are doing. I hope we have enough carvers show up to make it worth their effort to keep a room available for us. I have hope that we could attract new people to try their hand at woodcarving. Perhaps they would be also inclined to join the Genesee Valley Woodcarvers club. The Greece Senior Center is in the Town of Greece Town Hall complex just to the North of the Town Hall, on the West side of Long Pond Rd. approx. 1/4 mile North of Latta Rd. I hope to see you there, come carve with friends.

During the beastly hot days of early July, the Nettletons spent part of the afternoon trying to find cool water in our cove on Twitchell Lake. We spent some time swimming with and observing the two momma mallards and their offspring. It is interesting to note the differences in their bills. They did get rather alarmed when the loon chasing a fish underwater appeared in the cove.

Chips from the Editor I would like to thank Floyd for getting me started with the newsletter. His are big shoes to fill. Please send me anything you would like to have published in the newsletter. The deadline for publication in the next newsletter will be the 15th of the month. Please send information about upcoming carving shows, pictures of your carvings or carving tips to share. We have lost several members in the past few months. I didn’t know everyone but I did have a small connection to Chris Nilsen. I am a member of the Rochester Birding Association. At a December meeting several years ago, Chris made an announcement about the Genesee Valley Woodcarvers group. He displayed some bird carvings, talked about the show and had brochures about club. I talked to him for a little while and took a brochure. We did go to the show. I thought carving might be a fun thing to do when I had time. Every so often the brochure would bubble to the top of my pile of stuff. Finally, in 2016 Jack and I joined. The carving classes seem to make the winter go by faster and I really enjoy carving. You might say I am here because of Chris Nilsen. Take some brochures or business cards and share them. You never know who you will interest in carving by just being yourself.
