Generosity Inspires

Generosity’s Impact is far reaching.Generosity directly impacts people’s lives. In 2014, gifts to the Winona Health Foundation helped a young mother fighting breast cancer, an older gentleman needing surgery and a child requiring special care.

In our past fiscal year, the struggles of 612 individuals and families were eased with financial assistance through the Ben & Adith Miller Patient Care Fund, amounting to $917,011. Here are words from a grateful recipient:

A night to rememberGenerosity lights up the sky over Lake Winona Manor

On a crisp, clear, early autumn night, Lake Winona Manor (LWM) residents and families enjoyed a spectacular fireworks display over Lake Winona. Having the fireworks just outside their door made it easy for residents to get bundled up and enjoy the show.

The fireworks display has become an annual October event thanks to the generosity of the Winona Health Auxiliary and Steven C. Johnson. Mr. Johnson’s wife, Cecilia K. Johnson, lived at LWM until she died in 2009. For several years, Mr. Johnson has given a gift to the Winona Health Foundation in her memory to help make the fireworks possible. His generous gift not only honored his wife’s memory, but also gave joy to others. At the end of October, just a few weeks after the fireworks, Mr. Johnson passed away. His generosity will be remembered.

Embracing the causeWinona Health Auxiliary Birthday Ball

The focus of the Winona Health Auxiliary’s 52nd annual event was on enhancing the healing environment in the Inpatient Behavioral Health Unit for community members.

“I have never attended a Birthday Ball before, but I came this year because of the ‘cause.’ The demon of depression has been knocking at my door for years, and I wanted to attend and support your event.”

Celebrating community supportBreastfest supports patients with breast cancer

Charlie Heins had known individuals affected by breast cancer and wanted to help – but how? He held a fundraiser combining two wonderful things: rock and roll and generosity. Through the efforts of volunteers, the event, open to all ages and hosted by the Black Horse, was an incredible success, raising $10,000!

The generous gift to the Winona Health Foundation helps patients undergoing treatment for breast cancer such as gift cards for groceries and gas for a single woman unable to work while recovering from her mastectomy; a wig for a single mom; and a gift card to cover basic needs for a woman whose husband passed away shortly before her diagnosis. Thank you to everyone who helped give the incredible gift of making a difficult time a little brighter for their fellow community members.

Enhancing healthcare with art2014 HealingScapes™ photo contest

HealingScapes™, a community photo competition, began in 2012 as way to involve community members in creating a healing environment in Winona Health’s newly remodeled all-private hospital rooms. It has since become a heartwarming annual event that provides a venue for area photo enthusiasts to share their talent with family, friends and neighbors receiving care at their local healthcare organization.

This year’s winning photos are displayed throughout the Women’s Health Center on the clinic third floor. Canvas prints also can be purchased in the Glady D. Miller Gift Shop in the hospital lobby. Proceeds will further enhance the healing environment in the Behavioral Health Inpatient Unit.

Giving to family, friends & neighbors2014 Winona Health annual giving campaign

The Winona Health Foundation’s annual employee giving campaign, Generosity Inspires, wrapped up in October. For six weeks, staff and volunteers had opportunities to support Winona Health’s mission: to improve the health and wellbeing of our family, friends and neighbors.

A quarter of the staff along with 100 percent of the board of directors and senior leadership gave during the campaign. Through this generosity, $50,001 was raised during the 2014 Generosity Inspires campaign. (See funds of focus to the right.)
