The original sans serif form.

First sketches for the serif forms.

The most difficult aspect of doing is to always remain humble: to work on something until it becomes detached from one’s self and from all traces of one’s own effort, until it can exist completely for itself and in and of itself. Reaching that simplicity makes the object completely inconspicuous, so that the widespread and million fold extensions remain unnoticeable, yet the mass product will be acceptable to everyone; it is accepted evenly because “there is nothing more to it”, “it does not show anything special”. Neither modern nor unmodern, neither original nor unoriginal, but simply there.

The idea for Generis came to Erik Faulhaber while he was traveling in the USA. Seeing typefaces mixed together in a business district motivated him to create a new type system with interrelated forms. The first design scheme came about in 1997, follow-ing the space saving model of American Gothics. As development progressed, a serif face, a slab serif design, and a further simplified sans serif were added.Consisting in each case of two typographic styles with and without serifs, Generis represents a type system for the next generation.

The four Generis styles, with uniform skeletons.

Generis Idea

Page 5: Generis a new typeface system

The unified basic form and the individual peculiarity of the styles lead to Generis’ systematic, total-package concept. Every style builds itself around a core of weights: Light, Regular, Medium, and Bold. Additional weights, small caps, old style figures and true italics complete the system. As the basis of the visual appearance with connecting forms, the Generis type system offers infinitely combinable elements. A range of accented characters allows text to be set in 48 Latin-based languages, offering maximal typographic free range.

SerifThe elegant serif style, witha classical essence.

SlabThe stable slab serif, with technical characteristics.

SansThe clear sans serif, with an objective appearance.

SimpleThe simplified sans serif, with a contemporary nature.

Generis System

Generis is designed to meet both optical criteria and the highest possible measure of technical precision. Harmony, rhythm, legibility, and formal restraint make up the fore-ground.The unmistakable character of the individual forms spans across the various elements, creating a unified whole while still maintaining a variety of representations that may be experienced. The clear formal language of the Generis type system resides beneath the informa-tion, bringing appropriate typographic expression to high-level corporate identity systems.

Page 7: Generis a new typeface system

Uniformly regulated proportions ensure a harmonious appearance in all styles.

The characters in direct comparison: individually defined forms are reduced to their essence, and form the basic pattern of the alphabet. Within the narrow and ambitious total character, the styles’ elements define them-selves effectively from each other.

Open letterforms provide more space for exterior space and ensure clear recognition at the same time.

The unmistakable forms of the numbers secure the error free digestion of information.

The shape of the Generis Sans lowercase »l« gives the letter additional legibility, making it ideal for public signage.

The elimination of decenders on capital letters permits the close setting of uppercase text, without any disturbing connections appearing between the lines.

Generis Clarity

Page 8: Generis a new typeface system

www.linotype.com

Aside from lining figures, old style figures help animate typography.

Related styles in text settings with identical sizes: Clear shapes and large interior counterforms lead to Generis’s readability. Its optimal contrast distribution creates an even, grey color. The uniform basis form, with its narrow width, allows more text to fit inside a given space.

The handwritten character of the true italics provides for more dynamics in the typeface.

Manually regulated letter-spacing prevents disturbing gaps in the flow of the text.
