Sound Attenuation: Overview

Datasheets represent “free field” data

– Conditions at site and surrounding structures dramatically change perception of

sound

Be cognizant of sound level AND frequency

– Higher frequencies dissipate quickly

– Lower frequencies carry significant distances

Location is the single greatest ally or enemy

– Codes are almost always based on sound pressure at property line

– Should be a consideration during the design phase

Increase distance from receiver

Vibration Isolators

Vibration isolation is a key success

survivability.

Creating the right foundation and

incorporating the right vibration

isolators are important contributors to

achieving this goal.

International Building Code

Result of work conducted in 1994 to merge many regional codes into the ICC (International Code Council)

– Building Officials Code Administrators (BOCA): East Coast, Midwest

– Southern Building Code Congress International (SBCCI): Southeast

– International Conference of Building Officials (ICBO): West Coast

IBC is recognized as the model building code for the United States


IBC Code Requirement

Critical equipment is considered a component of structure and should meet

specific performance requirement to withstand seismic loads and wind loads

(2006 version) – “remain online and functional”

IBC Code specifically addresses both design and installation of building

systems with emphasis on performance

Equipment manufacturers certify component design and recommend

installation guidelines

– Local installation compliance is the responsibility of the installer following

manufacturer recommendations

IBC Compliance and Testing

IBC certification requirement:

– Manufacturer shall test or analyze the component that shall

remain operable after a seismic event

• Actual test on a shake table

• Analytical method using dynamic characteristics and forces

• Other more rigorous analyses

– Supplier of the equipment must provide certificate of compliance

– Proper product labeling required per IBC 1703.5





Final Thoughts

Utilize the experience of senior engineers and generator set

partners to catch issues before hardware is installed.

Common sense goes a long way with the mechanical

components of the system, most issues can be seen, heard,

smelled, or felt.

Consider the physical installation and maintenance/ service

requirements of your system during the design phase to

alleviate issues with installation/commissioning.
