A Simple Example

This example shows how you can cut all of these mats out of one sheet of matboard. Using MatDesigner™, design the mats and save them

as you would normally.

Adding the First Mat To add a mat to the layout, click on File at the top left and select Add Mat from the drop-down menu. This will open the Wizard Mats folder. Select the mat you want to add to the layout. An illustration of it will appear on the right.

Click OK and it will appear in the lower left corner of the Nesting screen. Make sure Cut from Front is unchecked under Settings on the left. (Unless, of course, you want to cut these mats from the front.)

Move the mat to the lower right of the work area. Remember that you are looking at the layout from the front of the matboard. When you move the mat to the lower right of the layout, you are moving it to the lower left of the matboard as it is face down in the machine. To move it, click on the blue part of the mat, not the opening, and drag it. Make sure none of the mat ends up in the dark green uncuttable zone.

Adding a Second Mat Another way to add a mat to the layout is to click the Add Mat button under Tools on the right. This also opens the Wizard Mats folder where you can select another mat you’d like to add to the layout. Click OK and the mat will appear in the lower left corner of the Nesting layout, just as before.

Copy and Paste We want two of these mats cut in this layout. The easiest way to add another one is to copy and paste. Right click on the small mat and select Copy from the drop down menu.

Then right click again and select Paste. A copy of the original mat appears in the layout. The other methods for copy and paste work, too. Under Edit along the top toolbar, there are Copy and Paste selections. The keyboard shortcuts - Control+C and Control+V, also work in Nesting.

Move the small mats into the opening area of the large mat. When you cut this layout, the program will cut the small mats f

irst.

Rotating Mats in the Layout Two copies of a multiple opening mat have been added to the layout. For the second one to fit, it must be rotated 90 degrees. Select it and click the Rotate Selection button under Tools at the right.

Drag the mat into place on the left. Remember to leave sufficient room between items as you are arranging them. When two outsides are together, a quarter inch is normally fine. When you drag small mats into the opening area of larger mats, however, you may find it prudent to leave more room. When the opening of the larger mat is cut, there should be about half an inch of matboard all around the inside of the opening. This way the blade will not deflect and the cuts will be straight.

Saving Your Work There are two choices for saving the layout. Click on File on the toolbar at the top left of the Nesting screen. If you select Save Path File from the menu, it will save a Path file that will open directly into the Wizard cutting preview screen. You can also open a Path file in PathTrace if you wish to make some alterations. You can add this Path file to a layout in Nesting, just as you would add any other saved mat, but you cannot move or delete any of the individual mats in it. If you choose Save Layout from the File menu, the program will save a Layout file. You can open this layout file in Nesting by selecting Open Layout from the File menu. Here you can alter the layout in any way you like. It is just as if you were continuing work on this layout. You can delete, move, or rotate individual mats in the layout. You can add more mats to the layout then save the new layout.

A Second Example: Multiple Layer Mats Here are the mats we need to cut in this example. The top mat colors are the same, and the green inner mats are the same color. The efficient way would be to cut them using Nesting.

Add the triple mat to the layout. Notice that there are three Sheet tabs at the top. There is a sheet for each layer of the mat. In Nesting, Sheet 1 is always the top layer. Make sure Cut from Front is unchecked. Click on each Sheet and move the mat to the lower right corner.

Add the second mat. It is two layers and the program adds the top layer to Sheet 1 and the bottom layer to Sheet 2.

Moving a Mat to a Different Sheet The bottom layer of the small mat needs to be cut out of the green matboard on Sheet 3. Click on the Sheet 2 tab at the top. Drag the small mat on Sheet 2 to the top. With the mouse button still depressed, move the cursor over the Sheet 3 tab. The Sheet 3 tab will highlight and the mat will now be on Sheet 3.

Move the small mats to the inside of the large mats on Sheet 1 and Sheet 3. Cut the mats.
