SAFETY DATE: __________________
General safety rules in the classroom:
1. Do not run in class - you can get hurt or damage appliances.
2. All dangerous equipment must be stored in a safe place.
3. Scissors are dangerous - don’t run or play with it.
4. Be careful when working with irons - you can burn if you do not handle it correctly.
5. No learner is allowed to work without supervision.
6. Report injuries immediately.
7. Never touch blood if someone is injured - report immediately so the correct
procedure can be followed.
8. If helping someone that has a bleeding cut, always wear gloves to prevent HIV
transmission.
9. If you prick your finger with a needle or pin and there is blood visible, discard of that pin or
needle.
10. Make sure that there is a fire extinguisher in class that is in working order.

Safety rules when working with the sewing machine:
1. Back straight to help with concentration.
2. Where possible, work should be done in a sitting position.
3. Equipment and appliances should be arranged in a way that allows for safe
movement.
4. Keep your fingers away from the needle and moving parts of the sewing machine.
5. Don’t press the foot pedal when someone else is sewing.
6. Electrical cords must be out of the way as tripping over wires can cause injury and
damage to equipment.
7. Switch off your sewing machine whilst making adjustments.
8. Make sure you have good lighting while you are sewing.
9. Never pull out the plug by its cord.
10. Make sure the machine is switched off and packed away when finished.
Safety measures for working with sewing equipment:
1. Never run with scissors in your hands.
2. The sharp point of a scissor should always point downwards.
3. Pass a scissor correctly, handles facing person receiving it.

4. Pick up pins from the floor. It is dangerous to step in.
5. Never sew over your pins. It is not good for the machine, can break the needle and is
dangerous.
6. Never prick someone with a pin.
7. Never put pins in your mouth. It is unhygienic and you might swallow it.
8. If you accidently prick your finger, discard the pin immediately.
9. A Quick unpick is very sharp. Work carefully and put the cap back after using it.
10. Always unpick away from your body.
Safety measures for working with electrical appliances:
1. First put a plug in a wall socket. Then switch the plug on. Never switch the plug on first.
2. Never use appliances when you are barefoot.
3. It is dangerous to use any electrical appliances close to water.
4. Never touch anything electrical with wet hands or while standing in water.
5. Never push metal objects or your fingers into a plug.
6. Examine electrical wires to make sure there are no broken or damaged parts.
7. Never overload a wall socket, no more than 2 appliances in the same socket.

Wire a plug:
1. Remove the outer plastic of the cord.
2. Use a carpet knife and cut about 1mm into the outer plastic. Make sure that you don’t cut
through the coloured isolation covering. Bend the cable backwards and forwards so that
the covering comes loose.
3. Remove about 6mm of the coloured isolations covering from each of the 3 copper wires
with pliers.
4. Inside the plug there are 3 coper terminals:
Earth: Wire is yellow and green. (Double insulated plug does not have earth
wire.)
Live: Wire is brown and goes to live terminal, right side of plug.
Neutral: Wire is blue and neutral, connects to left side of plug.
5. Once the cables are cut you must twist the ends of each cable with your fingers to make
sure there are no loose copper wires.
6. Thread the wire through the wire grip and towards each terminal.
7. Tighten the screws at the terminals.
8. Position the cables within the plug so that they are not in the way of the screw that holds
the 2 parts of the plug together.
9. Put the outer plastic cap back and tighten the screw.

Basic First Aid:
1. Always wash your hands - this helps avoid infection.
2. Use plastic gloves to protect yourself against infections.
3. Rinse the wound with clear water.
Wash out the wound with running water
or use disinfection wipes.
This will reduce the risk of infection.
4. Remove any dirt with tweezers that is
cleaned with disinfectant.
See a doctor if you cannot remove all the dirt.
5. Stop any bleeding. Minor cuts or scrapes usually stop bleeding on their own.
If needed apply gentle pressure with a
bandage or clean cloth.
If bleeding does not stop elevate the wound
above the heart.
6. Apply an antibiotic or petroleum jelly.
Apply a thin layer of ointment or Vaseline to keep the surface
moist and help prevent scarring.

7. Cover the wound with a bandage or plaster
- this will keep the wound clean.
8. Change the dressing often - at least once a day.
9. Get a Tetanus injection if the wound is deep or dirty
- if you haven’t had one in the last 5 years.
10. Watch for signs of infection.
See a doctor if you see signs of infection
- such as redness, increasing pain, drainage, warmth or swelling.
HIV / AIDS:
1. HIV stands for – Human Immunodeficiency Virus.
2. AIDS – is the most advance stage of HIV infection.
3. HIV is mainly transmitted through sexual intercourse, but can also spread through open
wounds and cuts.
4. Once a person is infected, the virus remains in the body for life.
5. Antiretroviral therapy (ART) is the use of HIV medicines to treat HIV.

6. ART cannot cure HIV infection, but it can help people with HIV live longer, healthier lives.
7. HIV medicines can also reduce the risk of transmission of HIV.
Safety rules during fire drill:
1. Listen carefully to the instructions of the teacher when there is a fire.
2. Line up orderly and quietly.
3. Walk out of the building carefully towards your assigned place.
4. Stay with your class at all times.
5. Stay with your teacher until it is safe to return to your classroom.
How to use the fire extinguisher:
Remember the word PASS
1. Pull the pin in the handle.
2. Aim the nozzle at the base of the fire.
3. Squeeze the lever slowly.
4. Sweep from side to side.
