GENERAL MANAGER’S REPORT - Rob McPake

Good afternoon members; time to converse again. Well, we have more sweet news than sour.

However, given it is Friday 13th today, black Friday if you prefer, when bad luck runs riot, we shall

commence with a sour blast, savouring the sugary stuff for last. OK, here we go; headlining the

news: Club beverage prices will increase from Tuesday, 1st October 2019!! This is in response to

combined increases in excise duties, the last two (2) of which we have absorbed, coupled with

product price increases added by the breweries, and the price impact of the NSW container

deposit scheme (recycling of glass bottles). At the monthly Board meeting, held on Tuesday, 10th September 2019,

your elected representatives deliberated the issue of beverage prices extensively and it was passed, unanimously,

prices will rise from the first day of the last quarter as follow: pints and schooners of draught beer; nips of spirits

and liqueurs; and packaged beer items will all increase 20 cents; middies of draught beer 10 cents. Additionally,

the Saturday afternoon Happy Hour, commencing from 5th October 2019, will run between 4:00pm and 5:00pm,

with the discounted price of all standard schooners, glasses of house white, red and champagne being $4.50 per

glass; still fair vale and eligible to all members. These decisions are not taken lightly; they are necessary to sustain

your Club. Please understand.

Let’s escape the despair and morbidity and focus upon the brighter happenings and upcoming events at

the Club you love. Firstly, we have an action packed evening in store for you to commemorate Black Friday and

the first coinciding full moon in decades; we are astrologically aligned for a good time. Our entertainers for the

evening, Paula and David, coveted members of the popular duo, Time machine, are playing for your enjoyment

from 5:30pm to 9:30pm. My ears reverberate every time I hear the call: we like Time Machine!! Yes, so be here

this evening for the trip! Don’t forget members, our 2nd Chance Jackpot draw stands at $1,000 tonight which is a

spin to win scenario; if not won it will become an instant win situation next Friday, 20th September 2019. Most

importantly, with a full moon in flare across the blackened night skies, the Sydney City Roosters, the boys from

Bondi Junction, go toe to toe with arch rivals, the South Sydney Rabbitohs, emerging from their sanctuary:

THE BURROW (ho,ho), in their first finals derby since 1938. Roosters won the previous encounter 19 to 10; hope

they can emulate this performance. Be here to capture all the action on the big screen and participate in our half

time footy draw; all members eligible. Go the MIGHTY ROOSTERS!!!!

As most members will be aware, all who participated in our Club footy tipping competition are cordially

invited to our annual BBQ luncheon and presentation afternoon in the Sports bar on Saturday, 14th September

2019 from 12:30pm to 2:30pm. Our Vice President, Kevin Hagan, and affable Treasurer, Erle Lindsay, will be

cooking up a storm, providing all in attendance with a delectable (make sure you don’t burn the steaks fellas!)

complimentary lunch; there will be some complimentary refreshments; and, more importantly, the winners will

be issued with their prizes. Sub Branch members, please don’t forget, the next quarterly meeting is scheduled for

this coming Sunday, 15th September 2019, commencing at 11:00am in the Club’s auditorium. Please ensure to

attend. Members, please mark in your social calendars: Friday, 27th September 2019 as this is the next occasion

for our Monster raffle promotion. There will be over forty (40) prizes to the value of over $2,000 and the night

will also feature the sensational 60s, 70s, 80s & 90s rock vibes of the Bed Rockers till late! On a closing note,

thank you to Caroline Thompson, aka Lady C for your cabaret show exhibition which was well received on

Thursday, 5th September 2019.

CLUB PRESIDENTS REPORT - Bill Harrigan Hello Members,

Not a lot to talk about this issue. The new caterer James’ Kitchen is getting good reports so

if you like Asian food give it a try. He catered for the EMDC Meeting dinner on Wednesday

night and the 30 in attendance were very pleased with the food on offer.

Last Friday we held our Quarterly Sports Council meeting where I briefed your delegates as

to the current situation regarding the development. They also have set a date for their

combined Annual Presentation Luncheon which will be held on the last Sunday in November.

The Board met last Tuesday evening and we reported on the current development situation which is

still awaiting Council approval so nothing has changed other than we could be getting closer to a decision.

There will be another meeting on the 17th September which may provide more definite information.

Well its September again, the time the Board has to consider the price of our beverages. Recently

the price of beer went up the equivalent of 23 cents a schooner according to our General Manager. So after

due consideration and debate your Board resolved unanimously to increase the prices of all beverages in

line with the cost of a schooner which will now increase to $5.50 from the 1st October 2019.

This year the combined Club and sub-Branch will hold its annual dinner on Friday the 8th November

commencing 6.30pm for 7.00pm after the raffles. Cost of tickets will be $50 and this will include a three

course meal with the usual seafood entrée, entertainment and some refreshments. Should be a good night

and also could be the final dinner before we move back into our new premises about 2022.

Now those who participated in the Footy Tipping Competition are invited to attend a barbeque in the

Sports Bar and Outdoor area this Saturday commencing about 12.30pm. The winners of the competition

will be announced during the luncheon. Please note only those who participated in the competition are

invited to attend.

Also please note in this issue Director Robyn Mander-Ross has come up with another event for the

enjoyment of our members and guests (along with the Fashion and Fun Day on the 20th October), there is a

free Cabaret show on the 3rd October on the ground floor from 12.30 to 1.30pm which is advertised in this

newsletter.

INDOOR BOWLS REPORT Hello members, It is very pleasing to see good numbers attending Tuesday nights. The last two weeks have been 16 and 12, fabulous. The high numbers regularly has seen a big improvement in the standard of bowls, Di, Kevin and Mike are good examples of this. We welcome new members, Judy, Lorraine and Peter, who are quickly adapting to Indoor Bowls. Anyone wishing to come and have a roll, come along and give it a go. Tuesday 24th September will see the ever popular sausage sizzle, ably cooked by Mike. Have a good week, and may your chosen team in the finals do well. Remember this, the best team always scores the most points. For those wanting to witness quality indoor bowls, this Monday, sees the final of the singles between Stan and Ernie. Will be a fascinating game, so come on down. Good luck to both players. Erle.

SUB-BRANCH REPORT - Sue Welman (Secretary) Hello members, We have received apologies from Jill Rocchi who was to give a talk on Veterans in Sports at our Quarterly meeting on Sunday. We are in the process of planning the Club/Sub-Branch Combined Annual (Remembrance Day) dinner to be held on 8th November. Sadly we have lost two of our last surviving World War Two members.

Namely, Rod Rogerson who was put to rest at the Eastern Suburbs (Botany) Cemetery on the Monday 2nd September which was attended by David Jeffrey, Vince Buchan and Bill Harrigan with David providing the RSL part of the Service. And, on the 1st September James (Jock) Auld passed away and he was laid to rest on the 12th September at the Northern Suburbs Cemetery. Jock served in the Navy during WW 2 and on three occasions was involved in convoy protection with ships taking supplies to Murmansk in Russia. On the third occasion his ship was sunk. Jock was awarded a medal by the Russians at a special ceremony held at the Bondi Pavilion about three years ago which Bill attended with him. The EMDC held its Botany hosted meeting here on Wednesday evening where the main item on the Agenda was the Draft Constitution. Several delegates spoke about perceived shortcomings in the document in particular the reluctance of State Branch to simply amend the current Constitution to embrace the 2018 RSL NSW Act instead of producing a completely new document. On Monday 2nd September our President Bill along with Committee member Barbara Urquhart attended the Legacy Week Memorial Service at the Cenotaph in Martin Place followed by a short luncheon at Legacy House. On Wednesday 4th September Committee members Barbara Urquhart and Greg Goodieson represented the sub-Branch at the Battle for Australia Service at the Cenotaph which was followed with a luncheon at the Westin Hotel. Looking forward to seeing you all on Sunday at 11am.

Commemoration Service and Luncheon on 4th Sept.

VALE ROD ROGERSON Rod Rogerson passed away on the

28th August 2019. He had a well attended funeral at the West Chapel Eastern Suburbs

Crematorium. He was one of our last two remaining

WW2 veterans. Rod was a sailor in the Royal Australian

Navy. He sent to Hiroshima, Japan, just 6 weeks after the Atomic Bomb was dropped

in August 1945. A compassionate man, he was deeply

affected by the terrible injuries inflicted on the locals. Up until the last year or so we would see Rod most days in the club enjoying a beer and a Rose’

in his favourite “Cosy Corner”. May he rest in Peace.
