INTER DISCIPLINARY
PROJECT
2016 – 2017
TOPIC- WATER CONSERVATION - TEMPLES OF MODERN INDIA – MULTI-PURPOSE RIVER
VALLEY PROJECTS - THEIR ROLE IN WATER MANAGEMENT.
Clean fresh water is essential for healthy human life. However, today, nearly one billion people don’t have access to clean water. Water Scarcity is the lack of sufficient available water resources to meet water needs within a region. It affects every continent. Depleting reservoirs and falling groundwater table has led to an acute water shortage in several states of India as well. Multipurpose river valley projects in India were started with the basic aim of meeting the critical requirements of irrigation for agriculture, electricity for industries and flood control. The importance of the dams at that time can be inferred from the fact that dams were regarded as “the Temples of Modern India” by our first Prime Minister, Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru. Accordingly, dam construction was given such a high priority in India’s economic plans. Till now “Irrigation and hydro-power have been the major objectives of the water resources development in India.” These “Temples of Modern India” or rather Multipurpose Projects (or River Valley Projects) have not only solved much of the water scarcity problem but also boosted the Indian economy. Some of the important Multipurpose River Valley Projects in India are Bhakra Nangal Project, Mandi Project, Chambal Valley Project, Damodar Valley Project and many more.
Keeping in view the importance of Multi-purpose river valley project, in the overall development process of the nation, make a project on the same
