Over the years, Sunway Group has given generously to society through education which the

organisation views as a vital medium to enrich and improve lives. The Sunway Education Trust

Fund was established in March 1997 to manage and administer operating surpluses rom Sunway

University College and its group o colleges or the beneit o students.

To date, more than RM55 million in scholarships have been awarded to thousands o deserving

Malaysian students in various ields o study.

To continue this legacy o giving, the Sunway Education Trust Fund oicially became the Jerey

Cheah Foundation on March 18, 2010 and in doing so, crystallises Tan Sri Jerey Cheahs vision and

aspirations into a timeless commitment to beneit uture generations to come.

The Jerey Cheah Foundation is ounded based on the very same philosophy that has governed the

Trust Fund - giving to society. Be it through the Trust Fund or the Foundation, operating surpluses

are ploughed back into the institutions or disbursed as scholarships and research grants, ensuring

that sustainable, quality education is a priority.

As a result o its special corporate structure, the Foundation is able to continue in perpetuity Tan Sri

Jerey Cheahs vision and legacy o giving; and in time, become the catalyst or others to contribute

to the shared cause o education.

With the advent o this special purpose vehicle, our main education institutions are transerred to

the Foundation; namely Sunway University College, Monash University Sunway Campus, Sunway

International School and the Jerey Cheah School o Medicine.

Governed by a distinguished board o trustees, the Foundation aims to saeguard these institutions

or the purpose o providing and sustaining quality education or present and uture generations

o students. In line with the spirit o the Foundation, a good education at the highest level should

It is thereore very pleasing that in the recent SETARA exercise, conducted by the Malaysian

Qualiications Agency, Sunway University College achieved a Tier 5 or Excellent rating. This rating

places us on par with the oreign branch campuses and the best public and private universities in

the country, in terms o the quality o our teaching and learning.

While teaching and learning is undamental to any higher education institution, our mission statement

recognises that, like all true universities, we must engage not just in the transmission o existing

knowledge, but in advancing and applying knowledge. In this way we not only arrive at a better

understanding o existing knowledge, but we also contribute to the discovery and development o

new knowledge, new ideas and new applications o our knowledge.

The world o today aces many challenges that need to be addressed and solved in an intelligent,

inormed and logical way. These include economic challenges, the need or technological innovation,

poverty, overpopulation, the risk o dangerous climate change, and so on. The problems are very

complex and a sound education plus careul and rational inquiry is needed to properly understand

and address them. It is in all our interests that we strive to better understand ourselves and gain

practical insights into how we can improve our own lives and those o others.

Academic sta members at Sunway University College are expected to keep up to date in their chosen

discipline areas and be actively involved in the ongoing development o their discipline or proession.Many academic sta are involved in research and this is becoming an increasingly important part o what

rating in the Malaysian Research Assessment (MyRA) exercise.

Sunway University College is also unique in that we are the only institution to operate under a non-

Residential Satisaction in Klang Valley, Malaysia

Researchers: Dr. Tan Teck Hong and Dr. Khong Kok Wei,

Sunway School o Business

An understanding o the actors that acilitate a satised ordissatised response to residential environment can play a criticalpart in making successul housing policies. Housing satisactionis a complex construct, aected by a variety o environmental and

socio-demographic variables. The researchers examine householdssatisaction with their dwellings and neighbourhoods and at the sametime, develop the housing satisaction index or the country.

Discrimination o lexical tone and tone languages by monolingual

and multilingual inants

Researchers: Woo Pei Jun and Elaine Yong, Sunway Dept. o

Psychology; and Dr. Karen Mattock, Lancaster University, UK

How do inants understand tone? A research is being carried out

to investigate tone language perception by inants especially

those exposed to a bi-lingual, non-tone or one-tone language (or

e.g. Mandarin and Malay) and inants exposed to multiple tone

languages (or e.g. Mandarin and Cantonese dialects) and comparingthem to inants that are raised in a monolingual tone language

environment. Understanding such knowledge, would give insights

into understanding the learning o multiple languages and whether

there are critical periods in the childs development when multiple

languages can be learnt.

Tourism image o Langkawi Island: Visitors perception o the

legendary island or tourism development

Researchers: Suhaini Ibrahim and Dr. Goh Hong Ching, Sunway School

o Hospitality, Tourism and Leisure Management

In order to benet economically rom the popularity o a tourist

destination, it is important to determine the position and status o thedestination rom the perception o its visitors. As such, the researchers

study the image o Langkawi by understanding the perception rom

the visitors who throng the place. This project would assist in the

uture directive planning o Langkawi as a tourist destination thereby,

enabling the island to maintain its expected contributions rom

tourism.

Using interactions with Public Display Systems

using mobile devices

Researchers: Daniel Leow, Terence Le Grange and Sophia Latt, Sunway

School o Computer Technology

Interactive mobile systems are not just the in-thing now but areincreasingly becoming a necessity or savvy users especially in relation

to gauging trac on the road. This particular research will assist in

providing applications that will enhance interactions between mobile

systems and inormation publicly displayed on a large screens.

Computer TechnologyNeural network is a network o neurons reerred to

in the modern sense as articial neural networks

(AFN). These articial nodes interconnect to

simulate biological neural networks. The AFN is

used as the underlying ramework to design the

cognitive architecture o customer satisaction. In

short, the AFN is the agent o the architecture. This

agent is temporal in nature and act as the model-

based refex agents. Within this architecture, the

researchers try to assimilate the constructs o

psychology and processes. From these models,

a standard benchmark or customer satisactionin a orm o an Index can be ascertained via the

algorithm rom the cognitive models.

Behavioural problems in dogs:

The relationship between reported

behavioural problems, causal attributions,

and inefective discipline

Researchers: Wong Poh Wan and Cheong Sau

Kuan, Sunway Dept. o Psychology

Many studies show the benet o the human-dog

relationship to both parties. However, many dogs

are abandoned or relinquished to shelters becausedog owners cannot deal with the dogs behavioural

problems. Dog owners who think that the dogs

misbehaviour and other behavioural problems

are permanent may use ineective disciplining

methods which then lead to more reported

behavioural problems.

The results o the research suggests that

programmes designed to reduce pet

abandonment caused by behavioural problems

should ocus on changing the belie o dog

owners. The results highlight that behavioural

problems can be reduced through proper trainingmethods. It is also proposed that more access

to pet training acilities be provided as well as

promoting the need or proper training or dogs.

The Main Campus building evokes a sense o openness with its bright and airy space. It istted with 24-hour wireless internet (Wi-Fi) access, making it conducive to study at the many

study areas. This is complemented by round-the-clock security by the campus Auxiliary Police

and Security personnel.

TheTun Hussein Onn Library is the largest library in a Malaysian private institutiono higher learning. The vast two-level space houses more than 118,000 books, an exhaustive

collection o other publications, and special unction areas. It is a comortable haven to study,

More than 120 Classrooms and 15 Lecture Theatres where lectures are held in air-conditioned

Security is non-negotiable. That is why we have a committed team o security personnel

working around the clock to ensure that every day is a smooth and peaceul one. The 24-

hour security team is made up o security and auxiliary police and security personnel who

are accorded ull-ledged police status. They provide a comorting presence when patrolling

the vast campus or directing campus traic.

A cough, a sneeze, whenever a student eels under the weather, they can make their way to

the sick bay. Endearingly known as Nightingale Bay, it is situated near the caeteria where a

matronly Registered Nurse is on duty and well-equipped to handle minor ailments.

Car Park Plans are on the drawing board to construct

a new 12-storey academic block and a 2-level

basement car park. The 12-storey academic block

will house the interdisciplinary undergraduate and

new graduate programmes. The more than 550,000

sq. t. academic block is planned to accommodate at

least another 9,000 student population. The 2-level

basement car park is constructed below the soccer

ield. This basement car park consists o about 1,000

parking bays. This parking acility will be available to

both sta and students. The design development o

this project is ongoing and the targeted completion

date is end o 2013. Adhering to the governments call

or more environmentally riendly buildings, the 12-

storey academic block and multi-level basement car

park is going or the Green Mark Singapore and Green

Building Index (GBI) Certiication.

The environmentally riendly design and concept in

construction incorporates energy and water eiciency.

It also includes innovation or good natural lighting

and ventilation systems or a sustainable green

environment.

The Harvard Centre

As the institutions striving motto is to be the Harvard o the East and to provide world-class learning experiences,

plans are also in place to construct a Harvard Centre on campus. The Harvard Centre will be the ocal point or Harvard

Alumni to house their conerences and programmes. This centre will consist o a 120-seat lecture theatre and a semi-

circle seating auditorium or 80 people with some break out rooms or discussion purposes. It will also be equipped

with up-to-date acilities and audio systems.

Auditorium

The construction o a 5,000-seat prestigious

auditorium will be equipped with the most modern

and premier state-o-the -art acilities and AVA system.

This auditorium will be one o the most outstanding

in Malaysia to house graduation ceremonies and

world-class events like the Cats musical, Il Divo and

grand soprano perormances similar to that o the

late Pavarotti as well as symposiums.

The Multi-Purpose

Sports Complex

A Multi-Purpose Sports Complex will be built

adjoining to the 5,000-seat Auditorium. This Sports

Complex can be used or both indoor sporting

acilities and Sunway University College exams and

events appropriately. The Sports Complex will have a

seating capacity o 1,000 people.
