2018 Theme — Life on Land: United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 15

The JOTA-JOTI selected theme for 2018 is Life on Land — United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 15. It is defined as: Protect, restore, and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, and halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss. The World JOTA-JOTI Team has prepared a Participant’s Guide. It tells all about the largest Scouting event in the world and how you can get involved. Updated JOTA-JOTI Purpose Statement

Jamboree on the Air – Jamboree on the Internet (JOTA-JOTI) is a fun and exciting annual experience for all young people in Scouting using the widest range of technology communication channels to educate, promote cultural awareness, develop tolerance, as well as enhance sharing, collaboration and teamwork, along with building a sense of belonging to the worldwide Scout Movement. It is a “travel-free” Jamboree that takes place wherever you are in the world.

Updated JOTA-JOTI Description

Jamboree on the Air – Jamboree on the Internet promotes a Scout’s sense of belonging to the worldwide Scout Movement and builds cultural awareness, develops tolerance, advocates sharing and collaboration as well as demonstrates teamwork.

It provides exciting opportunities for young people to explore technology and to develop technical skills including fostering innovation and creativity through communicating with other Scouts. A wide range of activities using communication technology are the chief methods of attaining these goals.

JOTA-JOTI strives for a meaningful engagement of as many young people from as many parts of the world as possible annually on the third weekend in October. This weekend is also an occasion to celebrate Scouting and to generate positive energy to support the development of the Scout Movement.

The event seeks to promote quality Scouting in a manner faithful to the purpose, principles and method of Scouting and consistent with the needs and aspirations of young people in today’s world.

The JOTA-JOTI programme shall be a reflection of the Promise, Law, Principles and Method of Scouting, as defined by the WOSM Constitution, and shall also reflect the most up-to-date policies and initiatives of WOSM relating to youth programme for all ages.

JOTA-JOTI Sign-Up

Scout groups can sign-up for JOTA-JOTI using the registration system. With sign-up, a Scout group gets access to a variety of new features and exciting interactive possibilities for the JOTA-JOTI weekend. It is also possible to look through the sign-up groups, even select them by country, and pre-arrange contacts for the weekend.

There is no obligation to sign-up of course, but we recommend it so your Scout group can enjoy the additional facilities of the new event web portal.

The sign up system will be activated closer to the event. Check this link world-jotajoti.info/sign-up-for-jota-joti/ for updates.

If you are operating a national sign-up or registration system for JOTA-JOTI, we ask that you also ask people to sign up with the world system. This will allow them access to JID codes as well as late breaking information.

Participation Cards

A participation card for JOTA-JOTI, with the annual logo, is available at world-jotajoti.info/participation-certificate/. Scout groups may customize these by inserting the name of the participating group and distribute them to their membership, either in printed form or as an electronic certificate. The intention is that each participating group receives its card, as a confirmation of its participation and a souvenir of the event.

Languages

Life would be so much easier, but perhaps less interesting, if every Scout spoke the same language. But this is not the case. How can we help Scouts communicate with fellow Scouts that do not speak their language? Here are a few ideas:

The translator machine: There are free translation services available at the Internet. Several Scout groups have used it to translate radio or chat messages on the spot. It may not be very fast, but it is fun to do and it does help. You could even prepare a standard message for your Scouts in many different languages.

The J-Code: The J-code is a tool that enables a very basic conversation in those cases where there is no common language between the youngsters. The J-code is simply a set of abbreviations similar to the Q-Code used by radio amateurs. It is NOT a code intended to hide the contents of the transmissions, quite the opposite, it is intended to enable communication. As such it can be used over amateur radio and in Internet chat contacts.

The J-code is available in 14 different languages and can be downloaded at world-jotajoti.info/j-code/ If your language is not among these, but you would be willing to translate the English version into your own language, please send us a copy so we can add it on the web site.

JOTA-JOTI Trusted Partners

In early 2016 the World JOTA-JOTI Team announced the concept of JOTA-JOTI Trusted Partners and opened up the application process. By granting the status of “JOTA-JOTI Trusted partner” it will be clear to JOTA-JOTI participants and leaders which websites and services are trusted and recommended by the World JOTA-JOTI Team for use during the event.

Introducing the National JOTA-JOTI Ambassador

The World JOTA-JOTI Team considered avenues to support greater involvement of young people in the JOTA-JOTI weekend, to achieve a target of 3 million registered attendees involved by 2021 and available to as many young people as possible throughout the world. In 2017 about 1.5 million participants were involved from 152 countries. Areas considered as future priority work are:

• Increasing participation by NSOs and youth members;

• Creating innovative and immersive educational experiences;

• Increasing communication and partnerships;

• Keeping the technical infrastructure current.

One implementation to achieve those targets is having ambassadors in NSO’s to promote and support the JOTA-JOTI event and grow it along with the growth targets of each NSO.

Purpose of the ambassador role To promote the JOTA-JOTI event, encourage participation, support participants and grow the event in the NSO.

Role description Expected activities:

The National JOTA-JOTI Ambassadors (NJA’s) will

- Represent the WJJT in their country.

- Significantly increase participation in JOTA-JOTI with an agreed percentage each year, in line with the growth target of their NSO.

- Have a focus on event promotion

- Assist with the dissemination of information

- Promote JOTA-JOTI at national conferences, decision making assemblies, and other relevant national events.

- Set up a youth-member promotion team to assist them in making JOTA-JOTI available to as many young people as possible.

- Ensure programme quality and consider how JOTA-JOTI can be used to achieve elements of the Scout training programme. Introduce e.g. a reward scheme.

- Liaise with the national amateur radio body with the aim of increasing access to licensed amateur radio operators to assist with local JOTA-JOTI events.

- Annually draft the National JOTA-JOTI Story to tell about the event and show progress. Submit to the World JOTA-JOTI Team for inclusion in the World JOTA-JOTI Report.

Expected position skills and experience:

- The National JOTA-JOTI Ambassadors (NJA’s)

- Are the single point of contact for the WJJT in their country.

- Are part of the JOTA-JOTI ambassador circle

- Have a direct entry into or are part of the national educational methods committee and / or national governing board

- Have well-developed oral and written communication skills in their own language and English.

- Embrace information technology and social media.

- Can spread enthusiasm to youth members and are well-organized.

- Have a passion for, and understanding of, international Scouting

- Have helpful experience of taking part in JOTA-JOTI.

Role introduction in the field

The world JOTA-JOTI team foresees the introduction of the Ambassador role during the course of 2018. With the intended completion before mid 2019.

At this point in time, we are asking the International Commissioners of each National Scout Organization, together with their National JOTA-JOTI Coordinator, to review the role as described above and suggest possible candidates to the world JOTA-JOTI team.

National JOTA-JOTI Stories

With your help, the World JOTA-JOTI Team can compile a worldwide overview of the weekend and make it available to all participants. Of course, the information has to come from the participating Scout groups in your country. So you may want to ask them to prepare for that and send a short story of their activities to their National JOTA-JOTI Coordinator after the event. Experience shows that National Coordinators need to indicate this early and often to the participants to get good results.

National Coordinators are kindly requested to send “the story” of their country to the World Scout Bureau soon after the event. Please write us your ideas and comments, suggestions for future programmes and a description of the most exciting contacts. Note that an increasing number of participating Scout groups are using social media to submit stories and reports of their JOTA-JOTI adventures. This can greatly assist National Coordinators to compile the national report for their country. Check if any groups from your country have submitted material on the web that is useful to you.

The “NATIONAL JOTA-JOTI STORY 2018” form can be downloaded from the NJC page on the event website www.world-jotajoti.info to help you compile your story.

The numbers that are requested on this form will be used to compile some statistics. A reasonable estimate would be appreciated if they cannot be specified accurately.

Photographs showing Scouts in action at the microphone or keyboard and of other activities like electronic kit building, foxhunting, semaphore, map plotting and the like are most welcome. Of course, we do not need all your photographs, sending the five best ones is greatly appreciated. So are clippings of local newspapers carrying the story of JOTA-JOTI in your local community.

We also appreciate if you can include links to audio-visual materials available on-line that you consider worthwhile to be included in the worldwide JOTAJOTI report (but please be selective in your choice as we have space for just a few).
