Eduard Schmid was one of the 'greats' in our field, he had a command of both oral and maxillofacial surgery, as well as of the whole scope of plastic and reconstructive surgery. Numerous original surgical procedures are attrib- uted to him based on his large operative experience in the treatment of facial injuries. Only a few of them regarding our speciality shall be mentioned hereafter. In 1952 he reported on the reconstruction of the mandible and maxilla, as well as the alveolar ridge with various bone transplants. In 1953 he introduced the primary osteoplasty in cleft lip and palate patients for bridging the cleft defect. In the same year he improved the technique of full thickness skin grafting and reported on a new method of treating uni- and bilateral temporomandibular joint ankylosis. From 1954 to 1956 he improved the submental bipedicled flap plasty for upper lip reconstruction and reported on a procedure for columella lengthening by means of a forked flap. It was as early as 1956 that he worked on craniofacial surgery and he corrected traumatic and congenital hypertelorism quite a while before Gillies and Tessier reported on spectacular corrections of these severe facial deformities. Even after he had retired, Eduard Schmid engaged in craniofacial surgery which fascinated him continuously. Shortly before his death he wrote a paper on the history and development of craniofacial surgery, which he did not have the privilege to present at the Congress for Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery in Madrid (1992). This paper which was read by Professor SteinMuser in Eduard Schmid's name met with great interest among the audience. Listing the above-mentioned fields of work of Eduard Schmid makes it obvious that he always enriched literature and the congresses of the previously mentioned professional societies by presenting interesting and original scientific papers.
