Powder Metallurgy (PM)

● Shaping of a metal powder formulation by pressure and heat (sintering)

● Allows complex component geometries with tailor-made strength and high tolerances to be produced in one single operation without subsequent machining

● Cost-efficient and low environmental impact

● Over 40 million sintered components are produced every day for use in numerous applications

What are Consumables?

Products used for:

● Additives in chemical and metallurgical industries

● Surface coating for wear and corrosion protection of exposed surfaces

● Brazing of complex stainless steel parts

● Filters in automotive and chemical industry

● Admixing for e.g. high-efficiency welding electrodes and iron enrichment for food fortification

Chemical and metallurgical processing

Chemical processingUsing iron powder as reduction agent in organic and inorganic processes or as raw material in chemical compounds

Metallurgical processingUsing iron in alloying processes for improved properties or as a reduction agent in metal recovery processes

26 |

Page 26: General 2015

End User Presentation | Höganäs

Surface coating

● Formation of a continuous coating by melting the consumable material into droplets and impinging these droplets onto the substrate

● Cost-effective method to improve both performance and endurance of components in high-wear and corrosive environments

27 |

Page 27: General 2015

End User Presentation | Höganäs

Brazing

● High-temperature brazing is a joining process carried out under vacuum or in a controlled atmosphere with a brazing temperature above 900°C

● At brazing the filler metal melts and is drawn by capillarity while molten into the thin space between the base materials (not melted) that are to be joined

28 |

Page 28: General 2015

End User Presentation | Höganäs

Filter manufacturing

● Formation of a filter pack from a set of selected powder screens, one laying on top of another for cleaning of polymer melts in textile processing

● Formation of filter elements for cleaning of exhaust gas

29 |

Page 29: General 2015

End User Presentation | Höganäs

Admixing

● Using iron powder as additive in mixtures for different purposes such as iron fortification of flour

● Improved yield and efficiency to welding electrodes

● Oxygen absorber for food preservation
