artist statement ANNE MILLER

My mind is constantly processing design like a light that I cannot switch off and the simplicity of daily life can provide

unexpected inspiration. One such inspiration came from the simple act of brushing my horses tail. I looked at the

tangled mass of wiry black and white hairs and I was momentarily fixated by its linear quality. I saw a fluid looping

mass of lines and its smoothness and texture stuck with me.

I collected the hair from the brush and immediately placed it in my journal and continued to refer back to the

resemblance of beautiful lines. It had its own magic for me... This was the beginning of ‘Swish’

I’ve always try to create a line or mark that has life in it. And if I am calculated I will loose all vitality and my freedom.

I feel this energy in many things that I see about me and I try to channel it into my own art practice.

Recently at a workshop Lorna Crane demonstrated the art of brush making with found objects from nature and I

was captivated with her process. Lorna said, “Using brushes was like unlocking a language, each brush holding its

own unique feel and quality. But it was the unexpected mark, pushing me out of my comfort zone that appealed-

the loss of control introducing a new-found freedom which I then connected to drawing again in a fresh and

exciting way.”

Lorna says this so beautifully, and her words were a catalyst which gave me the inspiration to make my own horse

hair brushes and explore their mark making qualities.

This new process felt organic, raw and alive with the energy of the horse! Having made my own collection of brushes

this gave me a new expression of marks, a ‘new territory’ which in turn created a new visual dialogue for me to

explore.

I asked my new tools to take me on a ride that freed me up in a way that has been unchartered and liberating. It’s

like ‘leap frogging’ and feeling the confidence to jump and land somewhere new. I thrive on going to new places it’s

the adventurer in me.

I started to experiment with my new brushes and let myself ‘unthink’ and just allow myself to respond with an

instinctive force. This became thrilling. I added tea bags and the tea water added tone, texture and natural colour. I

explored collage in a new way for me. I created a bank of marks using different mediums and a combination of horse

hair and thread. I was having fun!

It was obvious to me that design, composition, textures, patterns and colour all become part of my instinctual desire to create and a natural narrative began……

Gecko Studio Gallery News

● Wow. What a landslide of change in Fish Creek and in Gecko Studio Gallery!

Gecko Studio Gallery has undergone a change over winter this year. Closed for two months for

renovations we are now open once more with the addition of “Headquarters”, our new café. Without

compromising the character and charm of Gecko or the range of products and services – contemporary

art space, custom framing, art materials, art workshops and artisan wares – the café is a warm and

inviting space in the front of the building looking out into the street.

Headquarters are serving a unique wood roasted artisan coffee from Melbourne (Ricci Method),

delicious teas (including Calmer Sutra), chais, hot chocolates and cold drinks. Headquarters also has a

range of sweet and savoury foods to dine in or takeaway – including delicious vegan raw slices from

local supplier “A Seasoned Kitchen”.

We are already looking at new treats and products so keep an eye on the Gecko / Headquarters

Facebook page and on Instagram.

Headquarters café at Gecko Studio Gallery

● Please note - we have changed our opening time to 9am.

● The Flying Cow café in Fish Creek has gone and in its place is “Gibson’s” café – founded by our good

friend Michelle Gibson. Open from 8am for breakfast Gibson’s closes at 4pm. Open Thursday to

Tuesday, i.e. closed Wednesday. In a few weeks’ time Gibson’s will also be open Thursday to Sunday in

the evenings for small food / tapas and a wine bar (thanks to Fishy News for the info). Headquarters

café at Gecko and Gibson’s café have been working together to ensure the greatest success for both

enterprises – “sister cafés” if you like. We wish Michelle all the best and once the dust has settled for

us, you will see us in Gibson’s café, especially in the evenings.

● Welcome to Suellen and Dominic in the Fish Creek Post Office, taking over from Luke Dearlove. Luke

will stay in the Fish creek area which is pleasing as he is such a well regarded member of the

community.

● Gecko on Facebook - Keep up to date with our news and events on the Gecko Studio Gallery

Facebook page.

● Framing quotes/ consultations – a reminder that it is wise where possible to make a time with Kerry

for framing consultations and quotes. Kerry can be contacted on 0423 721 593 or at the Gallery (5683

2481). Kerry is not always at the gallery or we may have an event underway so it helps if you can book

a time with Kerry. Susan Purdy can also help you with your framing requirements on Mondays and

Fridays.

Foster North story in the Foster Mirror newspaper - 4 Jul 2017

Up on O’Grady’s Ridge Road in Foster North preparations are under way for a 75 seater restaurant. The

concrete slab is being poured on Friday June 30, all 180 squares of it. Owner Chris Garms plans to open

in late October. “We have 3 acres of vines. There’s pinot, chardonnay, merlot and little bit of sauvignon

blanc,” Chris explains.

Chris has had the 120-acre farm since 2000 and has lived there permanently for 10 years, which is the

time it has taken to realise his dream. He has worked in top restaurants in Brisbane where he grew up

and he also did a one-year stint at The Waldorf in London. “Hopefully I know what I’m doing,” says

Chris.

As well as the indoor restaurant and cellar door there will be a huge El Fresco area. Both will take in the

spectacular views out to Wilson’s Prom. There will also be disabled access. Chris will be open solidly in

the high season for breakfast, lunch and dinner. “We will quickly work out what hours we need to be

open.” He is licensed from 7am until 11pm giving locals and visitors a wonderful opportunity to relax,

eat and drink in wonderful style.

Wine of the Month – Narkoojee Wines

2016 Wild Rose - This wine is a departure from previous Narkoojee rosé style. The merlot grapes were

whole bunch pressed and fermented in older French oak barriques using 100% wild yeasts. This is an

ideal wine for al fresco dining, showing lovely aromas of quince and musk with a lively acidity.

2015 Cabernet Merlot - This wine is a blend of approximately 50% of each variety from the estate

plantings and co-fermented by indigenous yeasts. It is a rich and full flavoured wine of excellent

balance and integrated French oak. While excellent drinking now it will reward cellaring over the next

10 years or so.

Artist of the Month – Helen Ritt

It wasn't until in my late 30's did I pick up a paint brush. It all began with painting on glass for fun,

developing my skills and confidence and, then I began selling it at local markets around the Dandenong

Ranges. A few years on I gave up on the markets and began exhibiting my glassworks quite regularly

and reasonably successfully around the hills – it became an art more than craft. A short 16 week art

course at the CAE in 2000 opened the doors to other mediums and a job in an art supply shop enabled

me to dabble a whole lot more, whereby I settled mostly on acrylic paints because being an impatient

person, I found as they dry quicker, I could do more, without too much mucking around with smelly

toxic materials. Its only since I relocated to Fish Creek 5 years ago that I have put away the glass and

concentrated only on canvas and explored different subject matters. I seem to waver between

contemporary abstract with loads of colour and texture and DOGs at the moment. My own Jack Russell

– Rex seems to be my muse and I constantly marvel at all dogs' and their capacity to enthrall anyone

and everyone with their unconditional love and friendship. Having had very little formal training, I

never really mastered the art of drawing with confidence so, therefore my style is naive with a touch

of humour. I paint what I see in my mind and I paint because I enjoy it.

Sandy Point

Sandy Point Music Club - A group of interested residents have recently banded together to form a

Sandy Point Music Club. Their aim is to enhance the village atmosphere of Sandy Point by organising

regular events at the Community Centre.

The plan is to encompass different styles of music to cater for different ages and groups with the main

focus on having social and fun evenings. This is very important in a community and Sandy Point is

pretty well a perfect size to allow this to happen.

As a result of running such events the group hopes to make a small profit with the proceeds being

donated to worthy causes with some local connection. Profit from the first two events was given to the

South Gippsland Hospital.

The Music Group would love to hear from people with ideas and “special requests” for future events.
