1 Dennis Leversha Born in Castlemaine in 1945 Completed teacher training at the Technical Teachers Training College and taught art at Swan Hill, Sale and Wonthaggi Technical Schools. After undertaking the first two years of a four year diploma at Castlemaine Technical School, during which I studied water colour with the late Gilbert Foster and metal work with the late Stan Ellis (who taught the Leveny sisters of Buda fame in Castlemaine) I continued on to the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology to complete a Diploma of Fine Art ( Painting ) in 1964. Lenton Parr, Rod Clarke and Lindsay Edwards had an influence on my work at this time. The first year of my two years in industry was spent at Neon Electrics in Sth. Melbourne in the four man art department depicting proposed signs for customers (lettering and air brushing skills came in handy here). A chance meeting (hitchhiking at 1.30am in Toorak Rd.) led to twelve months painting stage scenery at the Princess Theatre in Melbourne and briefly at Her Majesty’s in Sydney. I was fortunate to be able to work with Dres Hardingham, probably the last of the “old school scene painters”. My first job each morning was to get the glue pot “on”. None of this new acrylic “crap” for Dres. The following year – after a stint of hay carting in the Sale area – saw me at “bonehead”, otherwise known as the Technical Teachers College of Victoria. This was the beginning of a twenty year teaching career that took me to Swan Hill, Sale, and Wonthaggi Technical Schools, teaching art from year 7 to year 12. Whilst not always successful, I endeavoured to make the time pass quickly for both the students and myself (time flies when you are having fun). I continued to draw, paint, practice lead lighting, and decorate some of my wife Bev’s pottery through most of this time. I conducted “night classes” in all these fields at various times. It was not uncommon for me to pursue something I had seen in a student painting and develop this idea into one of my works. Retirement has seen me able spend more time on my art – as well as house maintenance and tending to the needs of the “fleet” (old cars). Gecko Studio Gallery Newsletter June/July 2012

I am drawn to the landscape and the intricacies of nature – sometimes seeking photographic realism, sometimes seeking out the patterns found in nature; but all the time being interested in the tonal qualities and the effect of light and shade. I enjoy the mass of the landscape and the atmosphere around it. This is what I set out to capture. I like to work on a large scale - probably something to do with my scene painting days – and this has led to my mural work .Most of my murals, which are scattered throughout Gippsland from Kooweerup to Heyfield, are pictorial, depicting some part of local history. These murals range in size from a couple of metres to forty five metres long and usually three to four metres high – some inside, but mostly outside. Now retired and painting when not doing something else. Artist Statement Drawn to the landscape, I try to capture some of the aspects that appeal to me – whether it be the isolation, the intricacies, the enormity, or the effects that man’s endeavours have had on the landscape. I like to think that my understanding of the design elements has been used to enhance the visual presence of the subject matter; but, at the same time, keeping a reasonably accurate record of what was there. The more graphic works, whilst remaining visually accurate, allow the design elements to attain a greater importance in the works. I hope you enjoy the works. Dennis Leversha.

Check this out ● Google Art Project - From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Website: www.googleartproject.com Google Art Project is an online platform through which the public can access high-resolution images of artworks housed in the initiative’s partner museums. The project was launched on 1 February 2011 by

Google, in cooperation with 17 international museums, including the Tate Gallery, London; the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City; and the Uffizi, Florence. The platform enables users to virtually tour partner museums’ galleries, explore physical and contextual information provided about artworks, and compile their own virtual collection. The "walk-through" feature of the project uses Google's Street View technology. The virtual images of artworks were reproduced at extremely high quality, and each partner museum selected one artwork to be captured as a Gigapixel image (with over 1 billion pixels). On April 3, 2012, Google announced a major expansion to the Art Project as it signed partnership agreements with 151 museums from 40 countries. Now, the platform features over 32,000 artworks from 46 museums, and the image acquisition process is underway at the remaining partner museums. This expansion includes works from institutions like the Art Gallery of Ontario, the White House, the Australian Rock Art Gallery at Griffith University, the Museum of Islamic Art, Doha, and the Hong Kong Museum of Art. Additionally, Google launched a second, improved version of the website with new Google+ features, enhanced search capabilities, and a series of educational tools. Google intended for this second-generation platform to be a global resource; accordingly, the Art Project is now available in 18 different languages, including: Bahasa, English, French, Japanese, Polish, and Portuguese. Note – you may need to download Google Chrome Frame – takes just a few minutes. ● Cheap art guide www.arts.vic.gov.au/Arts_in_Victoria/Features/Cheap_Arts_entertainment_on_a_shoestring?utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=arts+victoria+enews+-+april+2012&utm_content=arts+victoria+enews+-+april+2012+cid_66492b55e6c8c1912968bcd42bbc1607&utm_source=artsvic+enews&utm_term=artsvicgovaucheaparts

Gippsland Art Gallery Sale ● Andrew Browne - Beyond the Horizon The Gippsland Art Gallery has invited prominent Melbourne artist Andrew Browne to respond to his 2000 painting Horizon, in the Gallery’s permanent collection. Beyond the Horizon draws together new works in response to Horizon, together with other recent works, which explore ideas of travel and transition, and the collision between natural and built environments. At once fleeting and timeless, Andrew Browne’s paintings explore the dual contemporary preoccupations with speed and solace, working with the language of abstract hyperrealism. 26 May to 22 July. ● Stephen Giblett – Plume. The recent collapse of the United States housing bubble has impacted on financial confidence around the world. In Plume, Stephen Giblett amplifies our shaken confidence in a suite of dramatic hyperreal paintings, in which this symbol of security literally goes up in smoke. The sense of looming horror that confronts home owners in America and globally is manifest here in Giblett’s compelling vision. 26 May to 8 July. ● Benedict Ernst - There Is No Land (but the land) 26 May to 8 July 2012 Installation artist Benedict Ernst takes an unconventional approach to landscape in There Is No Land (but the land). Employing the unusual and inorganic, Ernst models toxic, anti-consumerist gardens that oscillate between the scaled down diorama and the fully inhabitable environment. In an age where environmental concerns dog us at every turn, the respectively minute and gigantic sculptural works challenge our

traditional perception of landscape with Ernst’s signature sense of whimsy and humour. ● The Big Matrix

3D - Gippsland Primary Schools. 14 July to 12 August. The Big Matrix 3D is a celebration of young creative energy. In 2010 the exhibition brought together work by students from twelve Gippsland Primary Schools. In 2012 The Big Matrix returns in 3D. Oberon Symphony Orchestra Below is a press release which is out of date but is included as it tells us all about the Oberon Symphony Orchestra. We heard recently that the orchestra is in need of more violinists so if you play the violin or know someone who does, contact Dayna (see below). New Symphony Orchestra for Gippsland – ‘Major Musical Opportunity’ A new symphony orchestra is starting to take shape in Gippsland, following a preliminary get-together at Korumburra on 31st March. To help develop the concept further, an inaugural symphonic workshop will be held at Coal Creek Heritage Village on Tuesday evening, 1st May at 7.30pm. “Although there are many excellent musical groups in West and South Gippsland, we don’t have a fully-fledged symphony orchestra in this region – and we’d love to get one going,” says Ben Stein, who will conduct the orchestra. “This is a tremendous concept, and a great opportunity to bring musicians together from across Gippsland. The symphonic workshop on 1st May is the next step along the road.” String players from throughout Gippsland are most welcome to attend this free event, together with an invited group of woodwind, brass and percussion players. The program will include selections from Bach’s

Brandenburg Concerto, and symphonies by Beethoven and Haydn. “This will be a community orchestra,” says Ben, “and string players at any level are very welcome. Our aim is to move towards a series of symphony concerts later in the year, but on the way we hope to have a lot of enjoyment and fun.” It’s hoped that the new symphony orchestra will have players from many local groups, including the Wonthaggi Stringz, the ‘Rubenesque’ cello group, the South Gippsland Wind Orchestra and the Wonthaggi Brass Band, who have all performed at ‘Music for the People’ at Mossvale Park. “In addition to people who regularly play in groups,” says Ben, ‘we hope to attract players who feel that the current musical scene doesn’t quite meet their needs.” ‘Tree-changer’ Liz Radcliffe, who plays both cello and bassoon, comments that, “While I’ve played in many of the musical groups in Gippsland, what I miss most after my move from Melbourne is a full symphony orchestra and the opportunities that offers, so I‘m very excited about this new symphony orchestra for Gippsland.” The Orchestra will be led by Dayna Roberts, who has played in many community orchestras and also speaks highly of the benefits they bring to people’s musical education. “We are encouraging string players who are interested to contact us ahead of the 1st May workshop, so that we can send out music, “ says Dayna. Dayna can be contacted on: tel: 5662 2885, or mobile: 0458 060 025. http://flashbrack.net/SGWO/OberonNewsRelease02042012.pdf http://www.facebook.com/OberonSymphonyOrchestra

Lyrebird Arts Council Meeniyan Hall Concerts ● Liz Stringer Album Launch Saturday 23rd June: Meeniyan Town Hall, Doors open 7pm, show starts at 8pm. Members $25, Adults $30. Celebrating the release of Liz's brand new album "WARM IN THE DARKNESS' Special Guest VAN WALKER. Acclaimed Melbourne songwriter Liz Stringer returns with her fourth album, “Warm In The Darkness”, a barnstorming melodic ride which bursts out of the gates without conceding any of the emotive storytelling at its heart. Back in the saddle are Stringer's long-time bandmates Adam May (drums) and Tim Keegan (bass), along with more recent addition, Van Walker (guitar). Stringer has turned up the heat since her last release, the self-played, non-amplified, "Tides of Time", and alchemized the songwriter's subtle art with the amplified swagger of a rock band that means business. Brass and keys abound on these explosive songs that import echoes of Americana into the modern Australian landscape and paint something truly reflective of the great southern land. Recorded at Audrey Studios in Melbourne under the guidance of revered co-producer and engineer Craig Pilkington (who also played horns on the album) "Warm In The Darkness" is a joyful, guitar-laden homage to the great pop-rock traditions, and clearly Stringer’s most confident and accomplished album yet. “The evolution of Stringer’s musical career is an ongoing process – always simmering, always producing something, whether it be an intimate solo record or a rollicking band album. Basically, Liz Stringer is doing her own thing, her own way, and that’s why we respect her so much.”- Samuel J. Fell, Rhythms Magazine. ● Simone Felice. Support, Fraser A Gorman. Friday 13th July Meeniyan Town Hall 8pm. Members / Concession $40, Adults $45. Tickets now on sale: email [email protected] After his acclaimed tour to Australia in September 2011 SIMONE FELICE, singer, songwriter, novelist, survivor, will again bring his incomparable music and talent to our shores in July. Hot on the release of his latest release, Simone Felice with be accompanied by his band of merry music makers, making this an unforgettable musical evening of enlightenment and discovery. For Simone Felice, his self-titled solo debut has literally been a lifetime in the making. As the former drummer, writer and vocalist of The Felice Brothers explains, “This album is the one I’ve had buried away, somewhere in my weird heart.” Felice doesn’t use the word “heart” casually. When you sit with him in a room you can hear a subtle metallic ticking noise. If you hunt for the source of the sound you’ll find a vertical scar bisecting the entire length of his chest, a visceral reminder of the open-heart surgery he was forced to undergo in the summer of 2010 after a childhood congenital defect brought him to the brink of death. He traces the line of that scar as if it’s where his new songs actually emanate from, and in a way they do. “Simone Felice” is strikingly simple in its arrangements but extravagant in its emotional impact. There is a luminous aura surrounding these compositions, something magical and otherworldly, even when the lyrics are startlingly topical or reference historical events. Felice conveys his often mournful tales of star-crossed lovers and beautiful losers with remarkable empathy. Given his own life-and-death experiences – the recent surgery and the birth of his first child were just the latest chapters — his approach can genuinely be called openhearted. Over the course of a year, this Catskill Mountains-based artist found the most deeply resonant places in which to record his work, settings that were as haunted in their rafters as he felt in his bones: a barn near his home in the woods, an old church in London, an abandoned high school building by the Hudson River. What he created in these hushed, hallowed places is music that could be called folk but that has running through it a ghostly gospel-

like feel. Occasionally helping him realise his vision were friends from Mumford & Sons, The Felice Brothers, and even the members of a local girl’s choir, the Catskill High School Treblaires. ● Graveyard Train. Sat. 11th August, 2012. 8pm $35/$40. Table seating, BYO. All ages. Doors open 7pm, show starts at 8pm. Enquiries 5664 9239. Graveyard Train are a six piece collective from Melbourne Australia. The initial idea was for six men to sing in baritone, like men, about Werewolves, Vampires, Ghosts and the like over frenetic foot stomping country music. Six men playing men’s instruments just as men were born to do. It was a whacky idea, it worked, things moved quickly and the band now boasts a fan base right across the world. With their new album “Hollow” dropping in May the band are proud to present the first single lifted there- from I’m Gone. A rollicking stab of wild-west woe and stomping train-yard rhythms, I’m Gone bears all the hallmark Graveyard Train traits. That said, much like the upcoming album, the track also introduces a slightly wider approach than previous Graveyard Train releases. Remaining lyrically preoccupied with all things macabre, “Hollow” manages to capture the infamous live reputation and punchy story telling of the band but the Drums are bit fatter and the guitars and psychedelia turned up just a notch. Once described as “horror country drunken bearded stompy chain smashy madness … ghost stories, murder ballads and tales of redemption crooned through melodies plucked directly from the afterlife”, Graveyard Train use drums, upright bass and guitars around a swirling mix of instruments with a long history of storytelling such as washboard, steel guitar, banjo, harmonica, whiskey and blood. As well as their infamous chain and hammer, it’s a winning combination that has seen them take their notorious live show throughout the US, Canada, UK, Europe and of course all over Australia, earning them legions of diehard fans along the way. They have sold out venues such as The Corner Hotel, The HI-FI and The Spiegeltent and been named festival highlights by organizers and punters alike everywhere from Golden Plains (VIC), Meredith Music Festival (VIC), Woodford Folk Festival (QLD), The Vancouver Folk Festival, Hillside (CA), Port Fairy Folk Fest VIC), Boogie Fest (VIC), Blue Mountains Fest (NSW), Wave Rock (WA) through to the Edinburgh Fringe Fest – to name but a few. Instantly at home on any stage, from the neck tattooed rockabilly in Sydney to the farmer in Tamworth, the derelict punk in Belgium or the hippie in Toronto, everyone ends up singing along. ● Julia Stone. Sat. 8th Sept. Tickets on Sale 15th June. Tickets $40. Table seating, BYO. all ages. To purchase tickets email: [email protected]. Enquiries 5664 9239. Julia Stone’s new album ‘By The Horses’ featuring the gorgeous songs ‘Let’s Forget All The Things that We Say’ and ‘It’s All Okay’ has just been released. Harper’s Bazaar hailed it as a “Triumph”. “emotionally fraught, stunningly beautiful, chilling and evocative…..(it) will give you goosebumps” Triple J Magazine. The album is co-produced by Thomas Bartlett and Patrick Dillett, whose combined work includes credits on records by David Byrne, The National and Anthony & The Johnsons. After selling out shows in London, Paris, Berlin, Amsterdam, LA & New York, Julia Stone returns to Australia for a limited Tour.

Back home she pursued her own art, principally along mixed media and textile lines, and began exhibiting in the early 80's. Annie has exhibited all across Australia and has works in private collections in the USA, Germany, UK, Japan and Canada.
