Introduction

GEA system Starting from a single Low Noise MEMS digital sensor, SEQUOIA IT is moving fast in order to bring the most FLEXIBLE, MODULAR and AFFORDABLE solution to the market to cover the need of vibration measurement and monitoring within the civil engineering market:

Just connect the GEA to your PC For QUICK and EASY site survey.

Transform the carring case into a Monitoring Box For LONG, UNATTENDED monitoring session.

Deploy a Multisensor Monitoring system Just use an USB HUB instead of expensive dedicated front-end

Data are suitable for Modal Analysis For those who need to understand the dynamic beahviour of structures

The sensor

GEA sensor integrates within one single unit a tri-axial low noise MEMS sensor, the 24 bit Sigma Delta A/D converter and appropriate signal conditioning.

Direct connection to a PC via USB, without needing an acquisition system

The external case is built within a very robust, rugged, anodized alluminium case. Full IP68 (5 bar of pressure) it’s able to withstand the most demanding enviromental conditions

Digital trasmission along the cable eliminates any EMC noise, even with extremelly long distances (up to 1km)

Conform to DIN 45669-1 the sensor is always delivered with its own calibration certificate.

All basic mounting accessories always included in the system

Raw data subsampling

Raw data are managed in a dedicated utilities able to:

• Select the desired subsampling

• Merge two or more files together

• Export the raw data in .txt files

Raw data can be used for post-processing studies like modal analysis.

The monitoring boxes for long monitoring

For long unattended monitoring, a monitoring box is provided. There are two types of monitoring boxes:

• one dedicated to a single sensor

• one able to manage up to 16 sensors simultaneously.

The monitoring boxes

The monitoring boxes are: • fully IP65 • easiy transportable • operating in wide temperature range

(-10 to 60° C), • DC powered (12-24 V), and it can be

connected to main power, external battery and/or solar pannels.

The external communication available are: - LAN - WiFi - GPRS

Usable as a normal data recorder, they have unbeatable memory capacity compared to standard instruments.

Monitoring options

Mailing

During the monitoring the user can select many email addresses where the software sends automatically three types of notices:

• Daily check of the system status

• Alert when the user-defined threshold or a desired reference curve (form the main international standard directives) is exceeded

• Information about the velocity peak (logging information)

Scheduling

The user can choose to start and stop the monitor manually or automatically at a desired time, for example from March 3rd at 9:00 to June 16th at 18:00. Moreover, the user can select the number of schedules in a day.

Relay alert

A USB relay can be connected to the box, to control external devices like a gyrophare, which is activated automatically in case of an event.

Remote control

The monitoring boxes can be accessed remotely by means of off-the shelf pc-based technologies. In particular, you can:

• Access the GEA-Lab software inside the monitoring box

• Download the whole measurement folder in the personal laptop

In this way, you are completely able to manage the monitoring from your office, without needing to be present in case you want to stop the monitoring or to change configuration parameters.

Modal test with GEA system

Modal test on our factory balcony

Configuration with 7 sensors distributed along the balcony and connected to a monitoring box

We used pedestrian walking as excitation and OMA (Operational Modal Analysis) algorithms to analyze data with Matlab scripts.

Considering the short time we dedicated (less than 15 minutes to setup the system and acquire the data), we have been able to clearly identify the first two mode shapes of the structure.

Second mode @ 50.50 Hz First mode @ 42.16 Hz

Long-term multiple-point monitoring

GEA system has been selected for the vibration monitoring within a big project in the North-East of Italy, involving the monitoring of a dam; a derivation tunnel and a new tunnel under construction.

15 GEA are installed and two monitoring boxes are used, one in a container and one close to a well.

Long-term multiple-point monitoring

The work supervision wants to understand which is the maximum amount of explosive than can be used in each blast, during the construction of the new tunnel, in order not to damage the surrounding structures.

Seven GEA accelerometers have been placed inside small boxes with IP68 epoxy and installed in the walls of a cavern which has been successively filled of 50 meters of water (5 bar of pressure).
