Week 2

Human beings are basically selfish creatures. To be

servants that Christ desires of us to be, we have to confront

and deal with the barriers that hinders servanthood.

Mark 10:45

"Even the Son of Man did not come to be served,

but to serve, and to give His life-a ransom for many.

Week 2

Day 1

1. The rich young man was very religious and pious man but stilllacked one thing. He was unwilling to let go of his wealth to follow

Jesus. His attachment to the world prevented him from inheriting

eternal life.

To the rich young ruler Jesus said, “You lack one thing: Go, sell all

you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in

heaven. Then come, follow Me.”  Mark 10:21

Mark 10:17-22 (The Rich Young Ruler)

As He was setting out on a journey, a man ran up, knelt down before

Him, and asked Him, “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal

life?”   “Why do you call Me good?” Jesus asked him. “No one is good but

One—God. You know the commandments:

Do not murder; do not commit adultery; do not steal; do not bear false

witness; do not defraud; honor  your father and mother.”

He said to Him, “Teacher, I have kept all these from my youth.”  Then, looking at him, Jesus loved him and said to him, “You lack

one thing: Go, sell all you have and give to the poor, and you will have

treasure in heaven. Then come, follow Me.” But he was stunned at this

demand, and he went away grieving, because he had many possessions.

2. People don't have to be wealthy to be attached to the world.

Many who are not wealthy nonetheless have materialistic values.

They believe material goods will bring happiness and self-fulfillment.

3. In this world of consumerism, people spend more time at work to

finance their enormous appetite for more. Even Christians are

willing to sacrifice the quality of their fellowship with Christ in order

to obtain more things.

4. Self-Check

Pray about your attitude toward material things.

I am willing to give up everything for the sake of the gospel.

I prefer a moderate faith.

5. Read Matthew 6:19-24. Rank the following priorities in your life

by numbering 1 to 8, with 1 being the highest.

Family Relationship with Christ

Job Advancement Personal Integrity

Recreation/Hobbies Serving Others

Obtaining nicer things Education

Matthew 6:19-24

“Don’t collect for yourselves treasures[a] on earth, where moth and

rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal. But collect for

yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves don’t break in and steal. For where your treasure is,

there your heart will be also.

“The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eye is good, your whole body

will be full of light. But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of

darkness. So if the light within you is darkness—how deep is that darkness!

“No one can be a slave of two masters, since either he will hate one and

love the other, or be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot

be slaves of God and of money.

6. It is NOT WRONG to want a better life for yourself and your family.

But, it is imperative not to be a slave of money. You cannot attract

others to Christ if your loyalty lies outside Christ.

7.  Genuine ministry in Christ's name requires a lifestyle of giving

instead of getting.

8.  Follow-Up Action :

Practical ways to begin ministering to (serving) others today.

i. ......................................................................................................

ii. ......................................................................................................

9. Watch and Pray

Dear God, free me from the bondage of materialism. Help me

set my priorities right and according to Your desires. AMEN.

Week 2

Day 2

1. The Entitlement Mentality (The 'Me' First mentality)

(a) Entitlement

● Wanting preferential treatment for self.

●  Me First, Others later.

(b) The Entitlement mentality is opposed to the Servanthood spirit

that requires us to give up everything to follow Jesus.

7/30/2019 Gds-book 6 Week 02

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/gds-book-6-week-02 4/15GDS 6 (MTO) W2 4 Notes by William Yeong

2. James and John requested to sit at the right and the left of Jesus in

glory. It showed their self-interest and a lack of understanding.

Consequently, Jesus reprimanded them for that.

Mark 10:35-39

Then James and John, the sons of Zebedee, approached Him and said,“Teacher, we want You to do something for us if we ask You.”   “What do

you want Me to do for you?” He asked them. They answered Him,

“Allow us to sit at Your right and at Your left in Your glory.”  But Jesus

said to them, “You don’t know what you’re asking. Are you able to drink

the cup I drink or to be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with?”

“We are able,” they told Him. Jesus said to them, “You will drink the cup

I drink, and you will be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with.

3. Contrasting Jesus with James and John.(Servanthood vs. Entitlement/Self-Interest).

Embracing servanthood, Jesus humbly sacrificed His life to save

the world.

Mark 10:33-34

“Listen! We are going up to Jerusalem. The Son of Man will be handed

over to the chief priests and the scribes, and they will condemn Him todeath. Then they will hand Him over to the Gentiles, and they will mock

Him, spit on Him, flog Him, and kill Him, and He will rise after three

days.”

4. Overcoming the Entitlement Mentality by Embracing Servanthood.

Jesus demanded His disciples to deny themselves, take up their

crosses and follow Him.

Jesus said, "Whoever loses his life because of Me will find it."

The only way to lose your life is to give it away and live for others

regardless of the way they treat you in return.

Matthew 16:24-25

Then Jesus said to His disciples, “If anyone wants to come with Me, he

must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow Me. For whoever wants

to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life because of Me will

 find it.

5. Watch and Pray

Dear God, I am sorry for the time when I constantly think of my

self-interest instead of Yours. Forgive me for being selfish andinward looking instead of being humble and teachable. Develop in

me the spirit and attitude of servanthood. Grant me a heart of

compassion for those in need. Make me humble and willing to

serve You and others sacrificially. AMEN.

Week 2

Day 3

1. James and John selfishly requested to sit at Jesus' right and left

in glory. This shows sinful pride and misunderstanding of the way

Christ defines real influence and power.

2. How does the world define influence and power?

Money Being the boss

Serving others Selflessness

Position in society

Humility

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/gds-book-6-week-02 6/15GDS 6 (MTO) W2 6 Notes by William Yeong

3. Jesus' Definition of Influence and Power

Read and underline the defining word in the passage below.

Mark 10:42-45

Jesus called them over and said to them, “You know that those who are

regarded as rulers of the Gentiles dominate them, and their men of high

positions exercise power over them. But it must not be like that among you. On the contrary, whoever wants to become great among you must

be your servant, and whoever wants to be first among you must be a

slave to all. For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to

serve, and to give His life—a ransom for many.”

Jesus said that if someone wants to achieve greatness, he must

be willing to become a servant; and if he wants to be first,

he must be "a slave to all." (v.44)

4.  Jesus gave His life to humble service and He taught His followers

to do the same.

Proverbs 16:18

Pride comes before destruction, and an arrogant spirit before a fall.

Pride is contrary to humble servanthood.Pride destroys our Christian witness and causes us to fall (stumble).

5. Jesus Life's Mission - To Serve and to Save the lost.

Luke 19:10

For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save the lost.”

John 10:45For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to

give His life—a ransom for many.”

6. Humility is the primary quality of Servanthood.

(a) Humility is the opposite of pride.

(b) God exalts a person only when he does not take credit for his

service and willingly surrender all the glory to Him.

Everyone who exalts himself will be humbled but the one who

humbles himself will be exalted.

Luke 18:9-14

He also told this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they

were righteous and looked down on everyone else: “Two men went up

to the temple complex to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax

collector. The Pharisee took his stand and was praying like this: ‘God,

I t hank You that I’m not like other people — greedy, unrighteous,

adulterers, or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week; I give atenth of everything I get.’

“But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even raise his eyes to

heaven but kept striking his chest and saying, ‘God, turn Your wrath

from me—a sinner!’  I tell you, this one went down to his house

justified rather than the other; because everyone who exalts himself

will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.”

7. The Parable of the Pharisee and the Tax Collector (Luke 18:9-14)

Luke 18:9-14

He also told this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they

were righteous and looked down on everyone else: “Two men went up

to the temple complex to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax

collector. The Pharisee took his stand and was praying like this: ‘God, I

thank You that I’m not like other people — greedy, unrighteous,

adulterers, or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week; I give a

tenth of everything I get.’   “But the tax collector, standing far off, would

not even raise his eyes to heaven but kept striking his chest and saying,‘God, turn Your wrath from me—a sinner!’ I tell you, this one went

down to his house justified rather than the other; because everyone

who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself

will be exalted.”

(a) Which man has the humble servant spirit that Christ desires?

Answer : ......................................................................................

(b) Name two persons you know who exemplify genuine humility.

8. Jesus Washed the Discples' Feet

 John 13:1-5

Before the Passover Festival, Jesus knew that His hour had come to

depart from this world to the Father. Having loved His own who were

in the world, He loved them to the end. Now by the time of supper, the

Devil had already put it into the heart of Judas, Simon Iscariot’s son, to

betray Him. Jesus knew that the Father had given everything into His

hands, that He had come from God, and that He was going back to

God. So He got up from supper, laid aside His robe, took a towel, and

tied it around Himself. Next, He poured water into a basin and began

to wash His disciples’ feet and to dry them with the towel tied around

Him.

(a) The opposite of selfish pride is to become a selfless servant

of God to others.

(b) Jesus gave us a model for servanthood when he washed the

disciples' feet. In the Jewish society, washing feet was the most

humiliating act yet Jesus willingly took up the towel and

became a slave, even to the point of dying on the cross.

9. Follow-up Action

Two things I can do to demonstrate Servanthood.

i. ......................................................................................................

ii. ......................................................................................................

10. Watch and Pray

Dear God, humbly I approach You in prayer. May Your name

be exalted as Lord and God. Grant to me a spirit of humility inserving others. May the love of Christ be exemplified through

my service for you. AMEN.

Week 2

Day 4

1. Spiritual Blindness : Indifference

It is possible for Christians to be so 'blind', negative, self-absorbed

and indifferent to spiritual issues.

Mark 10:46-52

They came to Jericho. And as He was leaving Jericho with His disciples

and a large crowd, Bartimaeus (the son of Timaeus), a blind

beggar, was sitting by the road. When he heard that it was Jesus theNazarene, he began to cry out, “Son of David, Jesus, have mercy on

me!” Many people told him to keep quiet, but he was crying out all themore, “Have mercy on me, Son of David!”

Jesus stopped and said, “Call him.”

So they called the blind man and said to him, “Have courage! Get up;

He’s calling for you.”  He threw off his coat, jumped up, and came to

Jesus. Then Jesus answered him, “What do you want  Me to do for you?”

“Rabbouni,”  the blind man told Him, “I want to see!”  “Go your way,” Jesus told him. “Your faith has healed  you. "Immediately

he could see and began to follow Him on the road.

Observations regarding Bartimaeus, the son of Timaeus.

● a blind beggar needing help (restoration of sight)

●  was ignored by the crowd

●  was judged by the passer-by

was told to be quiet by many people●  was persistent in his pleading

● truly believed in Jesus

●  was miraculously restored (vision) by Jesus

● followed Jesus on the road

2. Spiritual Blindness : Prejudice

Prejudice Defined

i. an unholy attitude toward people of other races, cultures and

economic status.

ii. preconceived judgment without just grounds or adequateknowledge.

(a) Prejudiced against the Little Children whom Jesus welcomed.

Mark 10:13-16

Some people were bringing little children to Him so He might

touch them, but His disciples rebuked them. When Jesus saw it, He

was indignant and said to them, “Let the little children come to

Me. Don’t stop them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as

these. I assure you: Whoever does not welcome the kingdom of

God like a little child will never enter it.”  After taking them in His

arms, He laid His hands on them and blessed them.

(b) Prejudiced against the Adulteress

 John 8:1-11

At dawn He went to the temple complex again, and all the peoplewere coming to Him. He sat down and began to teach them.

Then the scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman caught in

adultery, making her stand in the center. “Teacher,” they said to

Him, “this woman was caught in the act of committing adultery.

In the law Moses commanded us to stone such women. So what do

You say?”  They asked this to trap Him, in order that they might

have evidence to accuse Him. Jesus stooped down and started

writing on the ground with His finger. When they persisted in

questioning Him, He stood up and said to them, “The one without sin among you should be the first to throw a stone at her.”  Then

He stooped down again and continued writing on the ground.

When they heard this, they left one by one, starting with the older

men. Only He was left, with the woman in the center. When Jesus

stood up, He said to her, “Woman, where are they?  Has no one

condemned you?”   “No one, Lord,” she answered. “Neither do I

condemn you,” said Jesus. “Go, and f rom now on do not sin

anymore.”

7/30/2019 Gds-book 6 Week 02

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/gds-book-6-week-02 11/15GDS 6 (MTO) W2 11 Notes by William Yeong

(c) Prejudiced against the Paralytic whom Jesus healed.

Matthew 9:1-8

So He got into a boat, crossed over, and came to His own town. Just

then some men brought to Him a paralytic lying on a mat. Seeing

their faith, Jesus told the paralytic, “Have courage, son, your sins

are forgiven.”   At this, some of the scribes said among themselves, “He’s

blaspheming!”  But perceiving their thoughts, Jesus said, “Why are

you thinking evil things in your hearts? For which is easier: to say,

‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up and walk’?  But so you

may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive

sins”—then He told the paralytic, “Get up, pick up your mat, and

go home.” And he got up and went home. When the crowds saw

this, they were awestruck and gave glory to God who had given

such authority to men.

(d) Prejudiced against the Tax Collectors and Sinners whom

Jesus reached out to.

Matthew 9:10-13

While He was reclining at the table in the house, many tax

collectors and sinners came as guests to eat with Jesus and His

disciples. When the Pharisees saw this, they asked His disciples,“Why does your Teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?”

But when He heard this, He said, “Those who are well don’t need a

doctor, but the sick do. Go and learn what this means: I desire

mercy and not sacrifice. For I didn’t come to call the righteous, but

sinners.”

(e) Prejudiced through Unfair/Unjustified Judgement or Criticism.

Jesus taught that we should not judge others. Judging others

because of their sins, but failing to see our own sins, makes us

hypocrites.

Matthew 7:1-5

“Do not judge, so that you won’t be judged. For with the judgment

you use, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will

be measured to you. Why do you look at the speck in your

brother’s eye but don’t notice the log in your own eye?  Or how can

you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’

and look, there’s a log in your eye?  Hypocrite! First take the log

out of your eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out

of  your brother’s eye.

4. Spiritual Blindness : Disobedience

(a) There are Christians who simply refuse to obey and to do God's

work. They are unwilling to multiply their God-given talents.

(b) Christians must remove the roadblocks to ministry. It is time

to take off the 'blinders' and learn to love people

unconditionally. Only then can we minister to others in Jesus'

name.

Matthew 25:14-30“For it is just like a man going on a journey. He called his own

slaves and turned over his possessions to them. To one he gave five

talents; to another, two; and to another, one—to each according

to his own ability. Then he went on a journey. Immediately the

man who had received five talents went, put them to work, and

earned five more. In the same way the man with two earned two

more. But the man who had received one talent went off, dug a

hole in the ground, and hid his master’s money.

“After a long time the master of those slaves came and settled accounts with them. The man who had received five talents

approached, presented five more talents, and said, ‘Master, you

gave me five talents. Look, I’ve earned five more talents.’

“His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful slave! You

were faithful over a few things; I will put you in charge of many

things. Share your master’s joy!’

“Then the man with two talents also approached. He said, ‘Master,

you gave me two talents. Look, I’ve earned two more talents.’

“His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful slave! You

were faithful over a few things; I will put you in charge of many

things. Share your master’s joy!’  “Then the man who had received one talent also approached and

said, ‘Master, I know you. You’re a difficult man, reaping where

you haven’t sown and gathering where you haven’t scattered

seed. So I was afraid and went off and hid your talent in the

ground. Look, you have what is yours.’

“But his master replied to him, ‘You evil, lazy slave! If you knew that I reap where I haven’t sown and gather where I haven’t

scattered, then you should have deposited my money with the

bankers. And when I returned I would have received my

money back with interest.“‘So take the talent from him and give it to the one who has

talents. For to everyone who has, more will be given, and he will

have more than enough. But from the one who does not have, even

what he has will be taken away from him. And throw this good-

for-nothing slave into the outer darkness. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’

5. Follow-Up Action

Three immediate actions to serve outside my comfort zone.

i. .................................................................................................

ii. .................................................................................................

iii. .................................................................................................

6. Watch and Pray

Dear God, remove from me all prejudices known and unknown.

I know that these prejudices are harming me and hurting You.

Take away my spiritual blindness and make me see clearly so that

I can act decisively and wisely to honour Your name, as I minister

to others around me. AMEN.

Week 2

Day 5

1. David Sinned against God (Adultery with Bathsheba).

(Ref : 2 Samuel 12:1-5)

Nathan the prophet rebuked King David for committing adultery

with Bathsheba. David went on to cover his sin. As a result,

Bathsheba's husband, Uriah, was killed. In the end, David lost the

respect of much of Israel and almost lost his kingdom to Absalom.

2. David's Confession of Sin

(a) Read Psalm 51:1-5 and underline any words or phrases that

refer to David's confession of his personal sin.

Psalm 51:1-5

 A Prayer for Restoration

For the choir director. A Davidic psalm, when Nathan the prophet

came to him after he had gone to Bathsheba.

Be gracious to me, God, according to Your faithful love;

according to Your abundant compassion, blot out my rebellion.

Wash away my guilt and cleanse me from my sin.

For I am conscious of my rebellion, and my sin is always before me.

 Against You-You alone-I have sinned

and done this evil in Your sight.

So You are right when You pass sentence;

You are blameless when You judge.Indeed, I was guilty when I was born;

I was sinful when my mother conceived me.

(b)  Attributes of God to which David appealed as he

sought forgiveness.

i. God is Gracious

ii. God is Faithful

iii. God is Compassionate iv. God is Blameless (Upright/Righteous)

3. Sin Defined

(a) Sin is total selfishness.

It is a desire to be like God, knowing and doing what God does.

(b) Sin is self-infatuation.

Infatuation with self becomes a stumbling block to Christ's callfor His followers to become servants and slaves to the world.

Mark 10:42-45

Jesus called them over and said to them, “You know that those who

are regarded as rulers of the Gentiles dominate them, and their

men of high positions exercise power over them. But it must not be

like that among you. On the contrary, whoever wants to become

great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first among you must be a slave to all. For even the Son of Man did

not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life—a

ransom for many.”

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/gds-book-6-week-02 15/15

4. Self infatuation Hinders Servanthood

It is impossible to be a servant and self-infatuated (absorbed) at the

same time. John said "He (Jesus) must increase, but I must

decrease.” (John 3:30)

5. David's Response to God' Forgiveness.

Psalm 51:6-17

Surely You desire integrity in the inner self,

and You teach me wisdom deep within.

Purify me with hyssop, and I will be clean;

wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.

Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones You have crushed rejoice.

Turn Your face away from my sins and blot out all my guilt.

God, create a clean heart for me and renew a steadfast spirit within me.Do not banish me from Your presence or take Your Holy Spirit from me.

Restore the joy of Your salvation to me, and give me a willing spirit.

Then I will teach the rebellious Your ways,

and sinners will return to You.

Save me from the guilt of bloodshed, God, the God of my salvation,

and my tongue will sing of Your righteousness.

Lord, open my lips, and my mouth will declare Your praise.

You do not want a sacrifice, or I would give it;

You are not pleased with a burnt offering.

The sacrifice pleasing to God is a broken spirit.

God, You will not despise a broken and humbled heart.

6. Watch and Pray

Dear Heavenly Father, be gracious and merciful to me. Forgive me

for all sins of commission and omission. Create in me a clean

heart, a steadfast spirit, grant me the joy of salvation and make

me willing to serve You and others in your strength. AMEN.

Psalm 51:10-13

God, create a clean heart for me and renew a steadfast spirit within me.

Do not banish me from Your presence or take Your Holy Spirit from me.

Restore the joy of Your salvation to me, and give me a willing spirit.

Then I will teach the rebellious Your ways,

and sinners will return to You.
