Increasing focus on automation technologies and information management in the past six years

has resulted in the growth of the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) market. The

market’s revenue has increased more than three times during this period, and the power

Transmission and Distribution (T&D) SCADA market is presently valued at $XX billion. The market

for Energy Management Systems (EMS) SCADA, or transmission SCADA, has matured and the

only scope for further expansion lies in the distribution of voltage-level applications, or what is

technically known as a Distribution Management System (DMS). As a result, by 2020, global

SCADA revenue is expected to reach $XX billion, with nearly two thirds of revenue being

accounted for by SCADA DMS. Typically, DMS applications include a range of features and

applications such as remote metering, load variance control, feeder reconfiguration, power quality

management, customer call management, outage management, and workflow management. Given

the plethora of applications, DMSs typically need inputs from multiple external databases such as

geographic information systems and customer management systems. This is one of the reasons

why DMS implementation becomes expensive from the standpoint of the power utilities. In addition,

since DMS need last-mile connectivity, they need to collect network data from a large number of

field devices, such as relays and Remote Terminal Units (RTUs), making the cost of

implementation much higher. However, the immense benefits that DMS brings in terms of improved

efficiency and reliability outweigh the costs. A well-managed DMS implementation typically has a

payback period of five to six years. The challenge, like in most other IT systems, lies in collecting

the right data and converting it into actionable intelligence.

12.1.1 Power

The rate of production, transfer, or energy use, usually related to electricity. Measured in watts and

often expressed in kilowatts (kW) or Megawatts (MW). It is also known as "real" or "active" power.

12.1.2 Installed Capacity

Installed capacity refers to the generator’s nameplate capacity as stated by the manufacturer or the

maximum rated output of a generator under given conditions. Installed capacity is given in

Megawatts (MW) on a nameplate affixed to the generator.

12.1.3 Active Installed Capacity

Active installed capacity refers to that component of electric power that actually performs work. It is

given in Kilowatts (kW) or Megawatts (MW).

12.1.4 Electricity Generation

The production of electric energy by transforming other forms of energy. Also refers to the amount

of electric energy produced, expressed in Gigawatt hours (GWh).

12.1.5 Electricity Consumption

Consumption of electricity calculated as generation, plus imports, minus exports, minus

transmission and distribution losses and measured in Gigawatt hours (GWh).

12.1.6 Renewable Energy Resources

Naturally replenishing energy resources limited in the amount of energy that is available per unit of

time. For example, biomass, geothermal, solar, and wind, can all be called renewable resources.
