8 Greeley County Republican Tribune, Kansas Wednesday, March 4, 2020 10 YEARS AGO— March 3, 2010 The Jackrabbits and Lady Rabbits both qualified for the 1A Sub-state Tournament at Colby. The boys won the 1A Regional Tournament with a win over Sharon Springs in the final championship game. The Lady Rabbits placed 2 nd in the Regional Tournament, losing to Weskan in the championship game. Members of the boys championship team are Clay Robertson, Jonathan Splitter, Jordan Nemechek, Jonathon Miller, Stephen Houston, Kellum Schneider, Isaac Wilson, Chaz Schneider, Cesar Valdez, Troy Wineinger, Anthony Wilson, AJ Govert, and Adam Smith. Lady Rabbit team members are Courtney Glazier, Kelli Crittenden, Hannah Whitaker, Kennedy Schneider, Shalee Myers, Kelcy Crittenden, Courtney Nemechek, Monica Veleta, Macinzie Lehman, Carly Robertson, Amanda Berggren, Mackenzi Bender, Haylie Greeson, Madison Moser and Heather Harper. Representatives from Greeley County Community Development and GC Recreation traveled to Oberlin/Decatur County to participate in a community conversation and share the story of Greeley County. Attending were Melissa Walk, recreation director, Angela Woelk, recreation board member, and Christy Hopkins, community development director. Betty Mintener, Jo Lobmeyer, Marj Hornbaker and Norma Mai greeted people on Farm Bureau Food Check-Out Day at Gooch’s Foods. ++++ 20 YEARS AGO— March 1, 2000 • Shannon Collins and Mike Haire announce their engagement. The couple are planning a June 3, 2000 wedding. John F. Robinson, 101, passed away on Tuesday, February 29, 2000, at Greeley County Long Term Care Unit in Tribune. He had been a Greeley County resident since June 1930. State Senator Clark and Representative Gayle Mollenkamp visited with a small group of voters on Saturday morning, Feb. 26. Both Clark and Mollenkamp discussed bills that were being debated in each house of the legislature. Ben Fisher, son of Julie Fisher and grandson of Ella Griffin, was recently named to the All-Tournament team in Manhattan High Freshmen Basketball tournament held in Manhattan, KS. Cori Woelk of Tribune was named to the President’s Honor Roll and Michael Drew Thon of Tribune was named to the Dean’s Honor Roll for the 1999 Fall semester at Garden City Community College. Aaron Epp was named to the Dean’s Honor Roll at Wichita State University. Dallas Nix and Brittany Baber served as pages on Monday, Feb. 21, 2000 for Representative Gary Hayzlett. ++++ 30 YEARS AGO— March 1, 1990 • A total of 1.08 inches of moisture fell last week in the form of a big, wet snow. Total to date is 2.24 inches, which is 1.64 inches above normal for the year so far. The Tribune Tumbleweed Saddle Club will have its regular monthly meeting March 6. A public hearing is scheduled for March 26 to consider grant funds for Horace water and sewer development. World Day of Prayer will be celebrated March 2 in Tribune and in 170 countries and regions around the world. Kathy Younger and Helen Govert will participate in the local program. The Melven O. Kuder Senior Center in Tribune won first place in the Christmas door decorating contest, according to the “Older and Bolder” magazine published by Southwest Kansas Area Agency on Aging. ++++ 40 YEARS AGO— February 28, 1980 • Saturday morning about 8:00 o’clock, as three hopper cars loaded with wheat were being pulled away from the elevator at Whitelaw, the rails spread at a place where the track curves, and two of the cars derailed, and the third one was almost off the track. It made a good deal of noise, said Dave Strawn, son of Howard Strawn, manager of the elevator at Whitelaw. Chuck and Gina Underwood, son and daughter of Rev. and Mrs. Michael Underwood, were recently award winners in the Hodgeman County Conservation district poster contest. Gina, a fifth grader, won the first place trophy for her poster entry. Chuck, a fourth grader, received a third place trophy for his entry. Mrs. Ethel Hetzel was elected president of the Tribune YWCA at the meeting held in the Tess Pringle home Monday evening, Feb. 18. A Kansas honors program, sponsored by the University of Kansas Alum Association, was held Thursday evening in the Stanton County High School building at Johnson. Included in the group of honor students from Elkhart, Iola, Johnson, Syracuse, Ulysses and Tribune were Dwayne Goodrum, Mona Harper, Kurt Lemman, Holly Wendelburg and Orville Wetzel. ++++ 50 YEARS AGO— February 26, 1970 • The Tribune Jackrabbits were rated No. 1 in Class 2-A by the Wichita Eagle, Topeka Daily Capital and Hutchinson News. The Jackrabbits have won 15 straight now, and have a 17 and 2 record for the regular season. L.A. Peter of Tribune, with a yield of 164.08 bushels of No. 2 corn per acre, has been entered in the 1969 DeKalb 200 Bushel club. He will be honored at a meeting and banquet of 200-bushel club members. Dr. Donald D. Decker, president of the Kansas Heart Association, announced that the officers for the Greeley County heart unit of the Kansas Heart Association for the 1970 Heart Fund drive are Mrs. Louise Myers, fund raising chairman; First National Bank of Tribune, treasurer and Heart Memorial gifts; Laura G. Farmer, R.N., educational chairman; Mrs. Dean Hornbaker, Tribune city chairman; Mrs. Gerald Price, rural chairman; and Dr. Willard Werner, Tribune, medical advisor. Approximately 225 attended the annual Blue and Gold banquet of Cub Pack No. 37 in the 4-H building at Tribune Tuesday night. Cubmaster Paul E, Myers served as master of ceremonies. Army Private First Class Paul S. Woolfolk, Jr., 25, whose parents live in Tribune, was assigned with the 27th surgical hospital in Vietnam, Jan. 17. ++++ 90 YEARS AGO— February 29, 1940 • “Yimmy Yohnson’s Yob,” a three-act comedy, will be given in the high school auditorium in Tribune Wednesday evening. The play is being sponsored by the Horace grade school. John Miller was robbed of $25 by some gypsies yesterday morning. Four women and a man in a shiny, black car stopped at his place in Tribune about 8:00 o’clock and evidently stole the money while talking to him. He didn’t notice the loss until noon; then notified Sheriff C.V. Walin. There are some things in Greeley County that are mysteries. Tuesday after some of the men and women of the community had played a volleyball game at the high school gym, another mystery had been added to the list. It is, “Why do they call women the weaker sex?” This game showed that the women can really take it. But as for the men... The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Ruby drank some coal oil Monday noon. She became rather seriously ill and was taken to the hospital at Scott City. The Tribune physician reported that she was getting along all right now. The story of conserving Greeley County soil will be heard by millions on March 19, when several of the local men will take part in the national Farm Home hour program. ++++ 110 YEARS AGO— February 1920 • Col. Frey thinks he is going to have to leave here and seek a lower altitude. Prof. Lowrey gathered a bunch of pickups together Saturday night and went over to Syracuse for a game of basketball. Indirectly we have it that the Syracuse bunch almost annihilated them. Not only walked on them but wiped their feet on them. The grade school is closed this week on account of the sickness of two of the teachers. Gleanings from 1926 Greeley County Republican Compiled by Nadine Cheney J.L. Glenn has received the first automobile license tag in Greeley County this year, #66. 14-Jan., 1926-Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Morgan have returned from La Veta, Colorado fairly convinced that this is the best section in which to reside. Clifford looks quite natural in his old job with the A.E. Smith Oil Co. 04-Feb., 1926-A few of our citizens have been having radios installed in their homes. 18-Feb., 1926-Clement L. Wilson has just received a letter from J. Doze, state fish and game warden, in which he says that they have made arrangements to import 5,000 Mexican Bob White quail to be distributed in Kansas. The quota for Greeley County is 24 birds which will be sent to Mr. Wilson, and the game warden has asked him to see that they are distributed over the county. 08-Apr., 1926-By keeping up of Ralph Wedgewood’s dues in the Woodsmen Lodge when he was not financially able to do so, thus saving the $1,000 for the family, was a commendable deed. Just such deeds by this lodge keep us thinking it is a splendid and worthwhile organization. 08-Apr., 1926- Undertaking—We have just received a full line of undertaking supplies including the hearse and are now in position to take care of your loved ones that have left you, in the most sympathetic way.
