Survey Says…This year, the Board and Management have been working tirelessly to address the most important issues that you, the Membership, have deemed the most important in order to make our Club truly “Best in Class.” A quick (but not complete) list includes improving food and beverage, solving our overflow parking issues, improving the swimming pool area and the possibility of short-stay day care, again, just to name a few.

From our committees made up of a cross- section of our membership along with input from our past presidents, the Board of Directors and Management have sought the expertise of two renowned consultants to develop a long-term master plan for our Irving Park campus. Brian Idle of Peacock & Lewis Architects and Planners will focus on our building and campus, pool, parking lots, etc. Anything we do here will affect our golf course. Therefore, we have also engaged Keith Foster as our golf course consultant. Our goal and intent is to advise our Member-ship of the potential for any improvements to our Irving Park Golf Course.

Please keep in mind that these folks are being retained to bring us a master plan for how we might grow to both serve our Membership’s needs now and in the coming decades. Expect to hear more about this initiative toward the end of this year and into next spring. It is important that you all know the Board of Directors will share all details and recommendations with the entire Membership prior to any changes being con-sidered. As always, should any improvements be agreed upon going forward, it will only be done with Membership approval and with the covenant of “zero assessments.”

Golf. Can’t Live With It, Can’t Live Without It…Yes member friends, even after hours of lessons and well-intended tips, I still possess a golf swing that my pal Ted Tewkesbury says, “Looks like you’re fighting off a swarm of bees.” Or as Head Golf Professional Mary Thomas quipped after observing the result of one of my big cuts at the ball, “Wow, Mr. President, that came off the club face like a cotton ball.” I guess my most consistent shot will always be the double at the Donald Ross Terrace.

Golf is an unusual game. When you have a good day, you can’t wait to get back out there, and when you have a bad day, you can’t wait to get back out there.

Salut d' Amour... During one’s life there are a few things that stand out in high relief. Serving this Club and its Membership as President has certainly been one of mine. We have an engaged and thoughtful Board of Direc-tors along with a dedicated and talented staff that often work long hours in order to create a “Best in Class” experience.

As this is my last President's article, I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere thanks to each and every one of you as well as our excellent staff for what I hope will be remembered as a progressive, successful and, most of all, “fun” year. I am excited to see how our Club continues to develop and grow in the years to come.

Because I’ll be seeing you…‘round the Club!

Any Club member that sponsors a new member from October 1st through December 20th will be entered into a drawing to win a grand prize of a five-course Chef’s Table Dinner prepared by Chef Greg himself. The dinner will include wine and be offered for eight to ten people. All other sponsors will receive a gift certificate for dinner for four in the Sunset Room (excluding alcohol). All dinners will be redeemable in January and February 2015.

We appreciate everyone’s support in introducing the Club to prospective members and growing our GCC family. As part of our efforts, we are pleased to announce that Brittany Mitchell has been promoted to Membership Director. Brittany has been with the Club for two years and has served as the interim Membership Director since May. Please join us in congratulating Brittany on her new position and feel free to contact her with any questions, inquiries or concerns in regards to membership. Holiday and fall temptations ring through-out this newsletter as we look forward to this special time of year. We are busy making plans to ensure that this Holiday season will be memorable for you and your family, as well as your guests. Just looking at the front cover of this newsletter brings back the memories of families taking pictures and the many hugs, smiles and happy times! The team and I greatly appreciate the support you have given us and your willingness to participate in new and different events. A fantastic example of this was on October 18th when we had our first overnight "Campout" on the Irving Park driving range. 43 participants experienced great camaraderie around a warm campfire after dinner at the Donald Ross Terrace, enjoying s'mores and baked cinnamon apples for dessert. With the proximity of the bar, TV's and restrooms a new term to me "Glamping" (combination of Glamour and Camping) was coined by some of the adult participants.

Looking forward, the team has a full menu of events, sales and activities to keep you engaged with GCC. New this year is the Holiday Bazaar on December 10th. This event will feature fantastic baked goodies and other treats presented in gift tins filled with tempting treats to either give away or enjoy for yourself. We will also have available Reidel glassware, select wines and more, specially priced for those last minute holiday gifts. There are so many other examples, and we are excited to be part of the "FUN," so please join us. As always, if you have ideas for future activities and events for kids of all ages please always let us know.

As we celebrate this busy time of year where some nights we will have upwards of 650 people enjoying the Club, please bear with us as we work to relieve our parking challenges. The team will be out running golf cart shuttles on especially busy days to provide service and battle the challenge of a busy time with too few parking spaces. As Mr. Rice noted in his article, we are moving forward with the Master Plan, so I thank you in advance for your patience and

tolerance as we do our best to manage a frus-trating situation. I have gained deep respect and great confidence in our Board and I am certain we will continue to address our challenges positively together. One of the great pleasures of my position and that of the opera-tional leadership of the Club is working closely with our Board and Committees to constantly challenge ourselves to be better each day. As we close out 2014, I want to extend our heart-felt appreciation to all those that contribute countless hours and endless energy to GCC. We are truly better for your efforts!

Our fantastic Club has a spirit all its own and while the team and I functionally make the wheels turn to provide the physical environ-ment, you and your family ultimately create the "buzz" that drives our brand in the Community and beyond. Membership, and for us happy Members are the lifeblood of our Club. Please always let us know how we are doing and do not ever hesitate to tell us how we can make your experience at the Club better, especially on special occasions or when entertaining guests. We want to do our part in helping recruit new Members but even more importantly, keeping you happy and engaged with the Club.

Lastly, on a personal note, I want humbly thank all of you so very much for the way you have supported me in my first two years here. Change can be a challenge and I am so very honored and appreciative to be a part of this Club, and to have the responsibility to lead a great team and build on the traditions of excellence that have been established. Happily, my family has finally made the move here and we are looking forward to celebrating this and many Holiday seasons in Greensboro with our new Club family. So, on behalf of the staff and myself, we wish you and yours a safe, healthy and happy holiday season and we hope to see you often at your Club!

With Warm Holiday Wishes,

Steve Matlaga, CCMGeneral Manager/CEO

From the Chef

Welcome to winter!

I would like to personally thank everyone for the support of the Donald Ross Terrace this first

season. We had a lot of fun and look forward to making next year even bigger and better.

Our culinary team is getting ready for a great holiday season at the Club with various member events, banquets and fresh seasonal menus in both the Sunset Room and the Family Grille. We hope you will dine with us often and enjoy all of our events so that you and your family will make great lasting memories at the Club during the holidays this year.

New this year, we are offering a "Holiday Bazaar" on Wednesday, December 10th where we will be sell-ing homemade stocking stuffers and specialty baked goods including Nana’s Peanut Brittle, Cashew Brittle, White Chocolate Candied Almonds, English Toffee and more. This is the perfect time to buy holiday treats for those special people in your life.

Please join me in congratulating Alex Pierce on his promotion to the Sunset Sous Chef position at the Club. Many of you have met Alex at the Donald Ross Terrace and at the Farm where he has spent the past two summer seasons overseeing the production at both venues. Chef Alex and I are both very passionate about farm-to-table cuisine and are going "back to basics." We are reintroducing the popular weekly “Chefs Table Feature,” utilizing only the freshest fish and seasonal products available. This will be a “Two for Fifty” promotion, consisting of a three course prix fixe menu priced at $50 per couple or $30 per individual. We are also moving away from menus that changes six to seven times annually, to menus that change and evolve with the seasons and local availability. Yes, we will sell out of a special occasionally, but that is our goal - to keep menu items enticing and at the peak of

their freshness. We will feature comfort food dishes such as Sole Imperial and Beef Bourguignonne to more avant-garde preparations featuring food from small local farms located across the Carolinas.

If you need any help planning events here at the Club or if you need food to be picked up for events at your home, please call Catering Director Scott Harmon and his team of professionals. If you need help with some-thing special we are here to make it happen!

Warmest wishes for the holiday season,

Chef Gregory John, CEC

Beverage UpdateIt's been a busy beverage year at Greensboro Country Club. We have had a lot of changes in the wine list, and we have actually more than doubled the number of wines on our list in the past year!

We continue to offer great monthly wine specials to give Members a chance to try new things. If we get a good response from the featured wines, we will bring those wines in by the glass or by the bottle. Hopefully all of you have seen our new drink menus featuring select cocktails, wines, craft beers and our very successful "Half Bottle Wine List."

The Club's Winemaker Dinners have been a great success. We hope to do a dinner with Don Hartford the winemaker in 2015, and we will continue to bring new and exciting

wines to the Club as we move into 2015.

If you have any questions, comments or suggestions, please feel free to call me at (336) 275-8506 ext. 133, or email me at [email protected].

Tennis UpdateAs we move forward from the outdoor season to the indoor tennis season, I would like to thank all of our GCC members for the support and participation during 2014. The success of our spring and fall Ladies Gate City, Ladies Night, Men’s Night and our Socials was due to the support of our members and hard work of the tennis staff.

We are already brainstorming and preparing for new and exciting events next year. The Ju-nior Development Program in 2014 grew tremendously, and we will continue to grow this program as we move into 2015.

We welcome all new Gate City Players to the Club! Your Tennis Staff would like to get a head start on the 2015 Ladies Gate City spring season. We are encouraging all members who haven’t played Gate City for Greensboro Country Club to participate next season. If you are interested, call the Tennis Pro Shop and we will place you on an appropriate team. This will give us a better understanding of how many players GCC will have next spring season.

If you have any comments, questions or suggestions, please feel free to give me a call or stop by the Tennis Pro Shop. Thank you for your continued support of our tennis programs, and I look forward to seeing you on the courts!

Tom Cascarano, USPTADirector of Tennis

Greetings! The final two months of our year offers some beautiful autumn days for the GCC golfer to enjoy. Personally, the fall and early winter are some of my favorite times to play our fine golf courses. The air is cool enough that a light sweater is needed in

the early morning, the bent grass greens are at their best in the fall with the humid air dissipated and the putting surfaces usually are at smooth speeds with a hint of firmness exacting the player to finesse the short game shots.

We are always seeking ways to promote you and your fellow members to play more golf with us. This year our club rounds of golf are less than our norm, some due to the tough winter weather and the unusually cool, wet spring. But the summer months were favorable for golf. Of course, one never catches up with interruption of play from bad weather; it is a setback that is hard to overcome.

Participation in our Club events has been a high-light. Our junior program has grown to the largest number ever. And the playing ability of our junior golfer girls and boys continues to improve. This unbridled enthusiasm from our kids has overflowed into the juniors competing in other junior golf tournaments all over the Carolinas and other states. The experiences developed for our juniors in our Junior League (new this year), the new Family Tee Markers, Beat the Pros match, and our junior golf camps has resulted in a volume of junior golf play virtually unprecedented for our Club.

And we want to continue to keep our juniors excited about the game and using the Club. They are our future for sustaining our club. Families are the focus for private clubs and our golf professional team adhere to that premise. We started a Family Club Champion-

ship last year for the first time and believe we may be the first private club in the country to do so. At least we cannot currently find any of our peer clubs that have one. Andy Plate and his family with wife Jena, sons Andrew and Charlie are our new family champions.

New events are avenues we continually strive to offer so our members have a variety of golf options. This year we started our first Night Golf for mixed play. The first one was so well received, we had a second one in the late spring. Now as we are in the fall, we had a third Night Golf.

The Father-Child and Parent-Child events have been popular every year with a large number of teams. To offer an extension of that concept, on Saturday, December 20th, we are having our first Holiday Father-Son Championship. This is created as a combination fun and somewhat competitive event different from the other two family events. Format will be such that both the son and father will play their own ball for an 18-hole team score. Handicaps will be applied for the fathers only. Registration for the Holiday Father-Son Championship will begin December 1st.

The Golf Committee is currently in the second draft series for the Calendar of Events for 2015. Always tweaking, the committee has made some variations for next year. The Men’s Club Championship for the coming year will have a change for the Champion-ship Flight. Instead of a three-day consecutive round competition, it will be played over two weekends with the first round on the preceding Saturday and then the final 36 holes played over the following weekend along with the other flights. As more information on this and other events are finalized, a communication will go to the Membership.

The Men’s Four-Ball Match Play was completed in September. This has shown to be a very popular with a full field of 64 teams each year. Some conversation

centers around the new experience for members meeting others for the first time. Other is the match including a large disparity of handicap strokes. There is some belief that the high handicap players have an advantage over the low handicap teams. But the final results belay that opinion.

Last year, the winning team consisted of Shane Kelly (low) and Ben McIlhany (med) who defeated Pete Beeler (high) and Doug Lang (med). In consolation, Hayes Holderness (med) and Gray McCaskill (low) defeated Robert Enochs (low) and Scott Wyatt (low). This year in the consolation Mike Harris (low) and Bill Lyon (low) defeated John Clark (high) and Seldon Patty (high). For the Championship, Pete Beeler and Doug Lang returned to the final match and won against Bob Rodman (med) and Carter Davenport (med).

You can see the broad range of handicaps for the teams shows there is not a clear cut delineation of one range of handicaps performing better than the others. There appears to be an equity in the competition. Some of that clearly has been assisted by the Club policy of

posting all the members scores hole-by-hole thereby adjusting scores by the ESC (Equitable Score Control) and verifying totals. You would be astounded how many scores we receive where the total is wrong, both too low and too high. If the score had merely been posted by the score on the card, the incorrect score would have been on the member’s file.

That is a part of the many goals our golf operations has for our members. To ensure that handicaps are as accurate as possible so any regular member games or Club competitions are conducted on as level a playing field as possible.

We hope to see you on the course this fall and early winter. Come by our golf shops and check out the new inventory we have for your holiday shopping enjoy-ment. A gift from the GCC shops is always an unexpected pleasure and appreciated by the recipient.

Folds of Honor/Patriot Day a Big SuccessThe Patriot Day event on September 4th at the Farm provided a new record of funds for the scholarships and financial support to children and spouses of our military who were disabled or killed in action defending our nation.

The couples were the dominant team for the Folds of Honor with Laurie and John Watson teaming with Robin and Vincent Tosco with a spectacular 50 in the Team Shamble net event. They edged the team of Garson Rice, Fred Carlson, Sam LeBauer and Joe Labauer by a mere stroke.

With generous donations from members who were not able to participate and the net, the Folds of Honor foundation will be receiving more than $6,000 from our one day event. This will be added to the more than $12 million raised this year for scholarships and support of military spouses.

2014 Four-Ball Match Play Championship

Beeler/Lang and Harris/Lyon sprint to Four-Ball Titles! With a flurry of solid play and putting from partner Pete Beeler and appropriately timed assist from Doug Lang, the team won the 2014

Four-Ball Match Play Championship. In the title match against Bob Rodman and Carter Davenport, Beeler/Lang recovered from a misstep on the second hole to win four of the next five holes. The match carried to the 15th green with a 4-up lead. With matching pars from each team, the victory was theirs. The 4 and 3 victory enabled the competitors to have their team emblazoned on the perpetual champions board in the Irving Park Club-house. This win was particularly distinctive as Beeler/Lang were defeated in the finals in 2013 after a halve for the 18 holes so the match was decided in extra holes against Shane Kelly and Ben McIlhaney.

The Consolation Flight was a battle as con-tenders John Clark and Seldon Patty matched Mike Harris and Bill Lyon with wins and losses for the opening nine and were "all square" proceeding to the 10th hole. A solid par on the 10th followed by a squeaked in birdie on the 11th by Lyon built up a two hole lead. An up-and-down exchange led to the team “dormie” after 15 holes. But the 17th was the determining factor as Mike Harris settled his tee shot immediately below the hole and sank the second stroke for a birdie and the team. The match was a 3 and 1 win.

Men’s Club ChampionMike Murray Jr. is the new Men’s Club Champion! With a potentially disastrous start, Mike Murray Jr. persevered to snare the Men’s Club Championship top honors. Murray posted a 4-under-par 211 with rounds of 74-68-69 and a 4-shot margin over defending cham-pion Eric Anthony. Mike had a 6-over-par 41 on his first nine holes. But a turnaround on the second nine pro-duced a comeback four under par 33.

Chan Badger was the first-round leader with a solid 69 at The Farm followed with an Irving Park 70, setting up a 3-stroke advantage over Murray and four ahead of Anthony. Jay Kirkpatrick was close by at five back. On Sunday the competitors returned to The Farm. Murray took the lead by two after the first nine holes with a 2-under-par 33. The back nine was his as Murray had four birdies accompanied by a lone bogey on the 17th hole to punctuate the comeback. Murray was 10-under-par for the last 45 holes played after the ominous first nine. Congratulations to Mike Murray Jr.!

The President's Flight had a tight competition with three players in close proximity to the winner’s podium for both rounds. Pat Scully, Russ Hunt and Lee Bentsen battled for the trophy the duration of the 36-hole foray. The three golfers were tied approaching the 18th green. Hunt and Bentsen managed pars but Scully miscued with a 3-putt on the final green to miss a playoff by a mere stroke. Russ Hunt and Lee Bentsen tied with a 154 total and were dispatched for the play-off. Hunt prevailed due to a pressure packed 14-foot putt to seal the win.

John Knowles and Mark Shogry were in a deadlock in the First Flight with net 141, 2-under-par. One hole determined the outcome as John Knowles bested his fellow competitor. In third place was another tie with Jerry Clark and Chris Trevey with 145.

Second Flight was masterfully handled by Jim Schlosser as he opened up the first day with an Irving Park 63 net score and a commanding 6-stroke lead. He increased

his advantage the second day with a closing 73 and a 10-stroke win over second place John Moore at 146 and third place Kent Talley with a 147 posted edging Ken Overbey by one stroke.

Champion of the Third Flight was Joe Floyd who secured a 3-stroke victory brandishing a 75-73-148 ahead of Glen Long and Jon Wall in a tie for second. Claude Dawson was the epitome of consistency with 77-78 for fourth place standings.

2014 Family Golf Championship2014 Family Golf Champions are the Andy Plate family! Posting a score of 61 on the Irving Park course in the team scramble format, the team was awesome with sons Andrew and Charlie, mom Jena and dad Andy.

Holes-In-OneJunior golfer Ford Gordon might be the youngest to make a hole-in-one for our Club. The 10-year-old scored an ace on the third hole at Irving Park in September. Ford, who is one of our most visible practice area users, accomplished the remarkable feat with a 6-iron from red tee markers setting.

Jack Sharp added an ace to his collection! Jack Sharp made a hole-in-one on Thursday, August 21st playing the 8th hole at The Farm. Finessing a 7-iron from 154 yards, Mr. Sharp made the feat to add to two previous aces for a total of three for his current inventory of holes-in-one.

Age ShooterCongratulations to Newell Price, our newest age shooter with a distinction. On September 10th, Mr. Price had his 86th birthday. When he arrived in the Golf Pro shop he announced to our golf professional staff that he was targeting his score for the day to be his age. He arrived to the 18th hole green with a pressure packed putt for the target score. After a determined deliberation, Newell Price stroked the ball boldly into the hole for the score of 86 and matched his age.

A Bonus for New Range Club Members! The Range Club is one of the best values for our golfers. The annual fee provides unlimited use of practice balls with no additional charge. For any member who signs up for the Range Club now, you will have the rest of the calendar year free. The annual fee will appear on the January statement.

The fee for a single person is $205 and $280 for a couple. With the per-pail-charge of $5.25, if a single golfer hits only one pail of balls per week for 40 weeks, it is a higher cost; for a couple, if the member and spouse hit one bucket three times per month, the member comes out ahead. This is a bargain that is hard to pass up!

Fall GolfWhile it appears the majority of our members prefer the long hot summer days to play most of their golf, I am a spring and fall type golfer. Let’s see why:

Typical Day in June, July or August - Hot!

Maybe not so much this year but history has taught most well-experienced superintendents that regardless of what today’s weather may be like it doesn’t pay to get too far away from the course. The day starts at 6:00 a.m. and ends at 5:00 p.m. or 6:00 p.m. or later. Maybe it’s just too much wilt on the greens, maybe a funny spot on the third green or most likely way too many things to do and not enough hours in the day to accomplish them (that’s de-spite 14 hours of sunlight). There are so many things going on that even when things appear to be going in the right direction, there is a subtle sense of guilt to actually taking the time away from constructive work to actually get out and play the course. All the while fully understanding an entirely different perspective is definitely gained from playing the course versus just riding around and passively observing conditions.

Typical Day in October – Sunny and Cool! There is little to no need for automated irrigation. Fall is usually one of the driest of the four seasons, and no one seems to argue that dry conditions typically result in the best playing conditions. The day typically starts at 7:00 a.m. and ends around 4:00 p.m. The greens have recovered from the late summer aerification and are usually playing the way we all wish they did for the entire 12 months of the year. Typical concerns are much less stressful. Maybe it is the leaves falling off the trees in a rapid succession and the guys just can’t keep up. Or maybe the greens are drying out and getting a little too fast. Often it is an early frost that turns the course off color earlier than I had hoped for. Probably one of the biggest challenges of a typical fall day is sitting down and working on the budget for the following year but even that is not necessarily stressful, just a bit tedious and time consuming.

So yes, members do see me on the range (and maybe even the course) much more in the spring or fall than the summer and winter. But it is simply because like a lot of the members I work for, I love this game too. I just seem to love it a lot more during a different time of the year. As much as I like going to an NC State football game, I love playing a Saturday fall round of golf even more. And by the way, among the many great benefits of this job, having the ability to get out and use the facility, occasionally playing with the members, is definitely something I place a great amount of thankfulness and value towards.

Fall and Winter RemindersFrost Delay – When temperatures begin getting down in the thirties don’t forget to check with the Pro Shops for how frost delays could affect your tee times.

Leaf Rule – Depending on conditions, it is never a bad idea to check with your group on the first tee as to whether or not you will use the local leaf rule. During this time of the year, even with the best staff, leaves can and will get out of control.

Meet One Of The GuysTodd Brandyberry began working at the Irving Park course in March 2009. He came to the Club after serving in the US Army as an E4 Specialist. Todd is single and enjoys a great many outdoor sports including kayaking and riding ATVs. His favorite food is Italian, his favorite band is "Metallica." Todd is an experienced equipment operator and a valued member of our team. Next time you see him on the course be sure to say "hello"!
