Studies of Shale Provenance: A Survey of Objectives,Techniques, And Examples

Despite their relative abundance in the geologic record,fine-grained clastic sediments (shales) generally have not beenstudied in as much detail as sandstones and carbonates. Withinthe past 20 years, however, extensive study of fine grainedsediments from the modern ocean basins has provided a variety oftools that can be used to examine the environmental records ofmoderm and ancient ~ine-grained sediments. This presentation willconcentrate on the objectives related to clastic source areas:how to determine their importance relative to biogenic input, andhow to evaluate their lithologies and weathering regimes.

Examples will be presented from ongoing studies of Permian shalesin Antarctica and Devonian shales o~ the Appalachian Basin.
