Welcome Welcome Together we will get through this.

I hope you, your families and loved ones are safe and well. As I write this, it has been 90 days since the world changed in ways we could not have previously imagined. It’s been heartwarming though, to drive through our resort and see residents and staff all supporting each other and showing such an impressive ability to cope with whatever life throws at us. With everything going on in the world right now, we need community more than ever. And that is the silver lining that living at any Palm Lake Resort brings. Likeminded neighbours become like family. We truly are stronger together.

In this issue of The Gatsby, we interviewed a black swan expert and asked him all about the amazing birdlife we have here on our resort waterways. See Pages 8-9. The black swans and their cygnets are such a wonderful site to behold, especially in these days when we’ve been increasingly enjoying a walk around the resort grounds for exercise and to give ourselves a mental break in the sunshine and fresh air.

You can also see and compare all nine of our architectural home designs in the one double-page spread on Pages 6-7. If you’ve been considering a move to Beachmere Bay, which design fits the bill best for you? There’s sure to be one here!

Our thoughts are with you all in this unprecedented time. Make sure you read all about the new and exciting ways we can still connect with you from afar. From Palm Lake Resort’s perspective, it’s business as (un)usual! We hope to connect with you soon.

Website wonders Website wonders

Optimism is proudly our middle name here at Palm Lake Resort. While COVID-19 continues to have a major impact on the world as we know it, in all the unprecedented challenges there have been silver linings – you just need to know how and where to look for them. Palm Lake Group has been given an exciting opportunity to adapt and evolve, to inspire a new way of business for our company now and into the future. In just a few short weeks, we’ve rallied our team to fast-track technologies to expand the way we sell our luxury homes and lifestyle. While we love more than anything to walk you through our inspiring display homes, physically tour you around our impressive resort grounds, and sit and enjoy a cuppa, some cake and a chat with you, there are many additional technologies at hand now to show you around the grounds, from afar. Here are all the different ways we are ensuring your dream to live at Palm Lake Resort Beachmere Bay can still be realised:

PRIVATE INSPECTIONS We are still hosting private resort inspections by appointment. Rest assured that we are following all government guidelines and have established our own additional measures to give you the best resort tour experience while also keeping everyone safe. Our resort recently received deep sanitisation by an expert external sanitisation consultancy and our local maintenance staff are continuing this Preventative Sterilisation Program on a daily basis.

VIRTUAL TOURS Our Palm Lake Resort websites have recently been upgraded to include even more user-driven virtual 3D tours of our Country Clubs and key display homes. From the convenience of your home, anytime of the day or night, you can visit us online and explore our homes and facilities by clicking through the floorplan as you like.

Have you been to our website recently? We’ve updated the content to feature a pile of video tours as well as clickable walk-throughs of our display homes and facilities. It’s given us the ability to take visitors on a virtual tour of our world-class resort and facilities, and through our inspiring homes right from the comfort and convenience of theirs! Visit www.beachmerebay.com.au and from the navigation bar at the top, simply click on the new “Virtual Tours” tab. On this new page, you can choose to take yourself on a tour of:

• The Hamptons Country Club • Oakdale display home • Huntington display home • Laurel display home • Eastport display home

You simply use your mouse to guide you wherever you choose to go through these properties. Click the white circles on the floor to progress through. You can also scroll up, down, left and right to ‘look’ around. It’s quite the view! Click the icons in the bottom left corner of the screen to show the floorplan and also use the measurement tool if you’d like to know just how big the spaces are.

As well as the clickable walk-throughs, we have video, with commentary, available for each of these properties as well. Simply sit back and watch as the video walks and talks you through each property’s features.

Our updated website also provides a great way for interested potential homeowners to share their tours with family and friends all over the world. It’s as simple as a few clicks!

And don’t forget that if you have any questions while you’re on our website, just hit the “Live chat” option in the bottom right corner of your screen to be instantly hooked up to a Palm Lake Resort Sales Consultant.

VIDEO CLIPS Bringing more depth to our Palm Lake Resort website are our new resort videos. Choose a display home that grabs your attention and, where available, click the “Watch video” button to enjoy a short clip offering a personal inspection of that home and the resort. We are continuing to expand this offering so if your favourite display home doesn’t currently offer a video, make sure you keep checking back regularly.

LIVE WEB CHATS While you’re online on our websites, did you know you can have a real-time chat with one of our Sales Consultants? The “Chat now” pop-up box, located in the bottom right corner of your screen, is a direct link to an experienced Palm Lake Resort Sales Consultant. They’re available to live chat with you during business hours and are a great resource while you’re online and have a question or two.

VIRTUAL REALITY HEADSETS The future has arrived! Palm Lake Resort virtual reality headsets are another way we can walk you through our most impressive display homes and resort facilities. Once you own a (complimentary) Palm Lake Resort virtual reality headset, you simply use your smartphone to scan the provided QR code matching the tour of your choice, pop your phone into the headset and, through the viewing lenses, you’ll be transported directly to that Palm Lake Resort. We have display home inspections and resort inspections for all our key selling resorts available right now. Contact our Sales Centre to request a complimentary Palm Lake Resort VR headset.

VIDEO CALLS Just like you’ve been doing to keep in contact with your family and friends, our Sales Consultants can also video call you. Video calls allow us to easily walk and talk you through our resorts and display homes in real time and give you the chance to ask the questions most important to you. All mobile smartphones have video call capability.

...AND ALL THE USUAL STUFF Our Sales Team can take your phone calls as per usual and, of course, we can always mail you our information pack. Easy. This package contains loads of information including floor plans for homes, resort masterplans, newsletters and more.

We are in a strong financial position here at Palm Lake Resort. We will work with you to ensure that your dream to live at a Palm Lake Resort is realised, even during COVID-19. If there’s one thing that’s certain in all this uncertainty right now, it’s that we are here for you - in more ways than ever before.

Guests of honourTHE BLACK SWANS POPULATING PALM LAKE RESORT BEACHMERE BAY HAVE THE BLACK SWANS POPULATING PALM LAKE RESORT BEACHMERE BAY HAVE BEEN THE TOPIC OF MUCH DISCUSSION AMONG STAFF AND RESIDENTS. BUT BEEN THE TOPIC OF MUCH DISCUSSION AMONG STAFF AND RESIDENTS. BUT WHERE DID THEY COME FROM AND HOW LONG CAN WE EXPECT THEM TO STAY? WHERE DID THEY COME FROM AND HOW LONG CAN WE EXPECT THEM TO STAY? AN ORNITHOLOGIST EXPLAINS.AN ORNITHOLOGIST EXPLAINS.

Once upon a time, the black swan did not exist – at least, not to most of the world’s population. White swans were all they had seen and, as such, all they perceived possible.

That changed with the discovery of Australia.

But the first recorded sighting of the black swan did more than surprise ornithologists of the old world. Nassim Nicholas Taleb, in his book ‘The Black Swan: The Impact of the Highly Improbably,’ points to that moment as a shining example of the fragility of human knowledge. Taleb coined the term “Black Swan” to describe to an extremely negative, rare and impossible to predict event with widespread consequences – particularly in the finance world. He lists examples like the financial crash of 2008, Brexit and 9/11. And while it may be too soon to understand its long-term impact, the COVID-19 pandemic feels a bit like a Black Swan event, too.

It’s only fitting, then, that the black swans of Palm Lake Resort Beachmere Bay have been a source of profound joy and comfort for residents during these uncertain times. Resident Kathy Hanlon says that with movement restricted, the black swans that populate the lakes by the undercover bowling green have been a welcome distraction.

“We are blessed with so much bird life to watch around the resort, but the black swans in particular are a big topic of conversation,” says Kathy. “We all love watching them take off and land from the little island in one of the lakes. It’s just beautiful – we are so lucky.”

The black swans first arrived around 12 months ago, when earthworks were completed on site. Since then, Kathy says there have been as many as 200 black swans spotted on the lake at any given time, though that number has dropped to around 50 more recently.

“I think they come and go throughout the year,” says Kathy. “They had babies with them sometime last year, which was amazing to see.”

Queensland Ornithological Society vice president Jon Coleman says that while they are unpredictable, black swans typically flock to quiet areas with plenty of natural vegetation.

“If you maintain the habitat for them and make sure they have a little bit of peace and quiet, especially when breeding, they will likely settle for longer,” says Jon.

Jon has tagged as many as 800 black swans between the Sunshine and Gold Coasts and followed their migration around the Moreton Bay area.

“There are breeding pairs dotted all along the coast, as well as big flocks that move around the mainland and offshore to feed on eelgrass,” says Jon. “With that being said, black swan migration patterns can vary. I tracked one bird from the top of the Gold Coast right down to Melbourne – it was the longest recorded movement for a black swan.”

And while it’s impossible to know where exactly the black swans have come from, it’s possible they may call Palm Lake Resort Beachmere Bay home for years to come.

“There are a few examples of females returning to breed where they were hatched, and parents will typically take their offspring to join the nearest flock,” says Jon.

8 9

But Jon explains that a relatively small proportion of black swans actually enter the breeding population, and those that breed rarely do so consistently.

“It is referred to as a pair bond effect, often seen in long-limbed birds; the longer a pair remains together, the better their reproductive output,” says Jon. “These core breeding pairs produce most of the offspring, so losing them will significantly impact the local population.

“With that being said, if a pair of black swans are stable and stick to the same territory for a few years, it’s likely they are established and could stay up to seven years.”

There is a possibility that, if and when last year’s signets breed, they will do so on the lakes of Palm Lake Resort Beachmere Bay – and we will all be able to watch them, together.

News from the Caretakers' officeWe are now in autumn and the weather at Beachmere is magnificent. Beautiful sunny days and cooler evenings; perfect for an evening walk along the beach.

John and I are relishing our roles and have managed to kick several goals already. Don, Kelvin, George, Brian and John have been making massive improvements to the golf tees, so in a very short time they will be a treat to play on. The gardens are looking beautiful, all freshly mulched and filled with new plants. Sue-Ellen and Maria work tirelessly to maintain and provide the five-star resort we are all so proud of. We have also organised for flu shots to be given later this month, which has been welcomed by our homeowners.

We welcome all those new homeowners joining our Palm Lake Resort family. I am sure your fellow homeowners will introduce you to the wonderful resort facilities here for you to utilise in full, in the not-too distant future. Before COVID-19 interrupted our world, Beachmere Bay homeowners were enjoying numerous get-togethers such as our “Neighbours Marching Forward” day, a joint venture with the Beachmere Sands residents. This proved a tremendous success, a glorious sunny day with the band playing and one and all savouring great food, drinks and company. It’s great to see our homeowners are still managing to stay in touch with each other (from a safe distance!) with regular Happy Hours celebrated in their driveways, along with their neighbours, and others participating in a nightly sing-a-long.

The progress of the new undercover bowling green and Sports Clubhouse is obvious to all and what an exciting structure it is, going up right before our eyes. Won’t be long before we can test our bowls on the new surface.

Make the most of your time to catch up on reading, movies or gardening because you will be too busy getting together with fun times ahead once we get the clearance to do so!

Until next time, keep safe.

John and Barbara McPherson had never lived in a lifestyle community before they moved into Palm Lake Resort Beachmere Bay in November 2019. Originally from Brisbane, the pair first moved to their Shelly Beach property on the Sunshine Coast when they retired. Later, they settled by the golf course at Pelican Waters.

“We had initially planned on staying in Caloundra, but after visiting Beachmere Bay on a whim, we decided it was the place for us,” says John. “We had met some people in the dog off-leash area at Beachmere and they suggested we check out the Palm Lake Resort. Two years later, I guess you could say we rolled down the hill.”

While John and Barbara took their time evaluating their options in Beachmere and on the Sunshine Coast, ultimately, the quiet atmosphere and plentiful amenities of Palm Lake Resort Beachmere Bay stole their hearts.

“There was no comparison, especially in terms of the quality of the construction,” says John, who himself owned a building company. “We booked a tour and fell in love with the first villa we toured.”

For Barbara, it was the feeling of safety and community that appealed most. “We have a great caretaker who keeps everyone in the loop with what’s going on, so we felt like we were part of the community from the moment we moved in,” says Barbara. “We love the warm pool – especially since we don’t have to take care of it! – and the weekly dinners and drinks with the other residents. We love being able to go for long walks, both in the resort and along the beach. Having come from Shelly Beach I didn’t think I would like the low tide, but it’s been a blessing. Being able to walk for miles out on the beach is lovely.”

Barbara also counts the local supermarket and butcher among the ‘good surprises’ she didn’t expect before moving in and believes her new lifestyle has helped her recover from a knee replacement in January much faster than she otherwise might have.

“We feel safe here, especially being so close to our family in Brisbane and our friends on the Sunshine Coast,” says Barbara.

Being able to enjoy resort living with their Dachshund, Ebony, in tow is the icing on the cake. “We used to breed Dachshunds professionally, and Ebony is our 50th,” says John.

“We wouldn’t have come if we couldn’t bring her along,” adds Barbara. “The dog-friendly aspect is one of the best parts of our lives here. There are a number of dogs big and little, and they really bond us all.

From the amenities to the community, it’s safe to say that John and Barbara are thankful to have made that last-minute right turn into Beachmere two years ago.

“It’s absolutely perfect for us – the lifestyle is second to none,” says John. “It’s like we’re living on a cruise, but we never have to unpack."
