teracy Night and Book Exchange a Huge Successhanks to Garden Gate PTA and Staff for making Tuesday evenings event such a rousing success! We had a great turnout.hildren enjoyed the literacy activities in classrooms, and many left school with a tall stack of new books to devour. A greatme was had by all!

tudent Restroomsarents, please remind your children of the importance of respectful restroom habits. Please remindhildren that they must flush the toilet, and if they wet the seat, they should wipe it up. Remind them toash their hands thoroughly and throw paper towels in the trash cans. Classroom teachers are alsoscussing these items with their students. Im hoping that together, we can keep our restrooms cleanerroughout the day. Thank you.

raffic and Parking Lott Garden Gate, student safety is our first priority. Please follow these simple rules to ensure studentafety: If dropping off your child at school, always drop off along the curb. Do not allow your child to getut of the car in the parking lot alone and attempt to walk across the lot. Note that the curb is a "noarking anytime"zone.Drivers must remain in their vehicles. Drivers who leave their vehicles unattended along theurb could be ticketed by the Cupertino Sheriff's Department. Always cross at a cross walk. Hold your child's hand, andach your child to always look both ways. Avoid getting stuck in traffic. Leave home earlier to make sure your child arrives to

chool on time. Students may be on campus at 7:45 am.

ismissal Timearents, please remember that there are two designated waiting areas on campus where we'd like you to wait for your 4th orh grade student to be released from class: Under the shade structure (lunch tables) or at the tables in front of the Cafe

Window (snack tables). Please do not wait in the hallways, as low noise, such as conversation, can be disruptive for classesill in session. Similarly, for safety and security reasons, students are not permitted to play on the play structures or theacktop areas after school. Instead, please have your children wait, seated, with you. Students who are playing on the playructures or the blacktop after school will lose play time during recess the following day. The Garden Gate Staff appreciates

our support with maintaining our learning environment and keeping students safe.

ake Homework Time Easier For Your Child With Motivation!ometimes getting kids to do homework is tougher than the homework itself! To increase your childs motivation:

Develop organization skills. Help your child devise a system that works

for her. She might use a homework folder and make daily to-do lists. Replace homework time with study time. If your child doesnt have

assignments, she can read or review. Stick to a routine. Kids resist less when theyre used to studying at the

same time every day. Let your child choose a quiet, comfortable place towork.

Help without taking over. Encourage and guide your child through toughproblems. But dont ever do the work.

Be a role model. While your child studies, finish important tasks yourself, such as paying bills or straightening up.

Offer praise, not prizes. This helps your child become self- motivated notmotivated by things. You might say, Wow! You kept trying and it paid off

ource: C. Moorman and T. Haller, How to Motivate Your Kids to Do Homework, NewsforParents.org, www.newsrparents.org/expert_motivate_kids_homework.html.

ropellerso you wonder how to connect better with your children? Do you wonder what matters to them, and how you can assist them toow up to be healthy, caring and responsible citizens? I encourage you to try a "propeller" - a question intended to spark

onversations with your children. Try it around the dinner table tonight!

This week's propeller: Do you have a vision for the person you want to become?

SUPERINTENDENT SEARCH UPDATEAs you may be aware, the Board of Education has initiated a search for our new superintendent. To assist us in this important process, we have retained the services of Hazard, Young, Attea &Associates, Ltd., a search firm that specializes in assisting boards with the identification andselection of superintendents.

One important step in this process is the identification of the characteristics we will be lookingor in our new superintendent. Your input is very valuable and the entire Board of Educationnvites you to participate in the identification of these characteristics by completing an onlinesurvey available at www.cusdk8.org. This survey is designed to gather your perception on themportance of various characteristics commonly found in effective superintendents.

The search firm will also be holding input gathering sessions at the end of February. The Board ofEducation invites all parents, district staff, and community members to participate by attending one of the twoCommunity Forums. Both of these forums will be facilitated by representatives of the consultant firm and will be held in the BoRoom at the District Office located at 10301 Vista Drive in Cupertino. The dates and times for the Community Forums are:

    Tuesday, February 28, 2012, from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. (afternoon session). Tuesday, February 28, 2012, from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. (evening session)

Your input will be included in a Superintendent Leadership Profile which will be presented to the Board of Education onTuesday, March 21, 2012. The Board of Education will then use the Superintendent Leadership Profile to help guide oursearch for a new leader for the Cupertino Union School District.
