Camping Vespers (macscouter.com- thanks to

Chuck Bramlet) Tune: O Tannenbaum

Softly falls the rain today As our campsite floats away. Silently, each Scout should ask "Did I bring my SCUBA mask? Have I tied my tent flaps down? Learned to swim, so I won't drown? Have I done, and will I try Everything to keep me dry?"

Game: Balloon Battle Royal (BSA Cub Scout How-To Book, 2010)

Equipment: balloons, string. Blow up the balloons and tie a piece of string on to each balloon. Tie the other end of the string around the ankle of each Scout.

Arrange the Cub Scouts in a large circle, each with an inflated balloon tied to their ankles. On a signal, players try to break all other balloons by stamping on them, while not letting their balloon get broken. When a balloon is broken, that player leaves the game. The game continues until only one player with a balloon is left.

Game:

Leg Wrestle

Two scouts lie side by side on their backs with their heads in opposite directions. They hook right elbows. When the leader counts “one,” they raise their right legs and touch them together. At the count “two,” this is repeated. At “three,” they hook their right knees and try to turn each other over.

Franklin Discovers Electricity (York Adams Council/ macscouter.com)

Franklin: "A Penny Saved" Lightning: "Zap-Zap-Zap" Experiment: "Try it! Try it! Try it!" Electricity: "Shocking!" It was the 1740's when Ben Franklin started working with Electricity. He conducted many different Experiments to try to understand more about it. His most famous Experiment being his kite flying one in June of 1752. Franklin believed that Lightning was a flow of Electricity taking place in nature. To test his hypothesis, he tied a metal key to a child's kite and flew the kite during a thunderstorm. The key became charged with Electricity, and Ben had proof that Lightning is really a string of Electricity. His kite Experiment and his others helped him develop many of the words and terms that we still use today when dealing with Electricity: charge, discharge, conductor, minus, plus, electrician, electric shock, and others. Franklin's numerous experiments with LIGHTNING led to his invention of the LIGHTNING rod. The LIGHTNING rod is used to protect buildings and ships from getting struck by Lightning. Benjamin Franklin was a huge contributor to the field of Electricity. He is said to be the first man to discover anything spectacular about Electricity, and he is well known by people everywhere for that. Unlike some other inventors in Electricity, Franklin did not spend his entire life working with it. He invented many other things that had nothing to do with Electricity, such as bifocals, the Franklin Stove, and the odometer. In 1831, he founded what is considered as the first public library. He wrote Poor Richard's Almanac, which was published from 1732 to 1757. He also established the first Fire department, and a police force. Franklin was also a huge political power in colonial America. Benjamin Franklin died at age 84 on April 17, 1790. He will forever be remembered for his contributions to Electricity and the rest of the world.

◆ STEM Minute

How Strong is a Piece of Paper?

Use regular copy paper, not cardstock for this challenge. Fold each paper into the three shapes and secure with tape. Slowly pile books on top of each shape. Have Cub Scouts guess which column will hold the most weight. Scouts can use their Handbooks to test the weight of each column. How many books can you pile on top of each shape? The cylinder can support the most books because it’s walls don’t have any edges. The force of the books cannot become concentrated in a particular area. The load is distributed evenly. In other words, all parts of the cylinder are sharing the load of the books. All parts of the cylinder, therefore, contribute to its overall strength until, finally, it collapses. The square and triangle deform more easily. They shift the weight of the books to their edges and corners, which deforms their walls and leads to a quick collapse. They are unable to carry weight only at their edges. Have you noticed columns in buildings and other structures, like parking garages? What shape are the columns? Are they on the inside of the building/structure to serve their practical purpose of supporting beams or arches? Or are they exterior columns which lend support but also beauty to the structure? Early architects in several ancient civilizations used columns in architecture including the ancient Egyptians, Persians, Greeks and Romans.

Cricket (Grasshopper) Thermometer Dolbear’s Law biology, math

Crickets and grasshoppers create high-pitched chirps to communicate, warn of danger, to attract females, and to scare off other males. They do not use their legs to chirp. They rub the edges of their front wings together and sound is amplified by the wing surface. They chirp when it is cold and they chirp faster when it is hot. The relationship between temperature chirp rate was written in a report by Margarette W. Brooks in 1881 in Popular Science Monthly. Amos Dolbear, physicist at the University of Kentucky published an article in 1897 “The Cricket as a Thermometer. “It is now called Dolbear’s Law. The frequency of chirping varies according to temperature. To get a rough estimate of the temperature in degrees Fahrenheit, count the number of chirps in 14 seconds and then add 40. The number you get will be close to the outside temperature. For example, 30 chirps + 40 = 70 degrees F. To convert cricket chirps to degrees Celsius, count the number of chirps over eight seconds and then add five to give the temperature in Celsius degrees.

BANDAGE RELAY Game Discuss the importance of the Cub Scout Neckerchief. The neckerchief is not just decorative, or to let others know to which den a scout belong. A neckerchief is a useful item for first aid.

Materials: Scout neckerchief or triangular bandage for each patrol

Method: Each Scout selects a partner and the pair line up, facing an assigned judge who is standing 25 feet away with a neckerchief or triangular bandage. The name of a bandage, either “ankle,” “head,” or “sling,” is called out. When the name of the bandage is announced, each pair of Scouts run over to their judge and correctly apply the bandage to their partner. The judge checks bandages as they are finished. As soon as a bandage is approved by the judge, it is removed, and the Scout on which the bandage was tied, now ties the same bandage on their partner. When the judge approves both bandages, the partners run back to their group and tag off the next pair of Scouts. Scoring: Each pair that correctly ties the bandages gets a point for their group. The first pair to run back to their group scores an additional point. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TgJLSV_NVzQ

CPR Switch Skit (www.boyscouttrail.com)

This Skit is meant for Scouts BSA and Webelos scouts. Decide for yourself if it is appropriate for your younger scouts or not.

Required: 3 scouts

Script: Scout #1 walks across the stage and suddenly grabs his chest and collapses at center stage.

Scout #2 and #3 enter, talking about how excited they are about completing their CPR, First Aid, Lifeguard, ... training.

They see Scout #1 and stop. They rush over and check the person for response. Scout #2: Are you ok? (shaking his shoulder) Scout #2: (to Scout #3) Call 9-1-1, he's not responding. While #3 makes a quick pretend call, #2 listens and feels for breath and signs of life. There are none.

Page 12: Gathering Midway Award of the Month: Conservation Good Turn … · 2019. 7. 12. · (BSA Cub Scout Songbook) Tune: Hail, Hail the Gang’s All Here Softly falls the rain today Hi!

Scout #2 starts fake chest compressions while #3 counts them to 30. Scout #3: Switch!

All three scouts switch positions. #3 lays down. #2 does counting. #1 does fake compressions.

◆ Commissioner’s Minute: • I am always amazed when I am out in the community and see our scouts in

action. Helping someone by either opening a door or picking something up that they dropped. People are normally grateful and say thank you to the scout. I have seen scouts stop everything to help someone who was in need of aid. The first thing out of a bystander’s mouth is “Oh, they must be a Boy Scout (we know them now as Scouts BSA)!” Teaching our younger scouts how to help others every year of their scouting career will help them remember when they need to

use it. “Be Prepared... the meaning of the motto is that a scout must prepare himself by previous thinking out and practicing how to act on any accident or emergency so that he is never taken by surprise.” Lord Baden Powell

◆ Closing

Good Night, Friends The preassigned Scouters perform the closing ceremony. Put candles on three of the four corners of a table. A different Cub lights each candle and REPEATS part of the Scout Oath. Den Chief or Den Leader stands at the fourth corner and says the last part of the Oath and closes the meeting by saying "GOOD NIGHT FRIENDS".
