When called by Country Aircheck to get his reaction to the new release, KILT PD Jeff Garrison began by saying, “I haven’t been this excited to get my hands on ratings since I got my first-ever book when I was in Nacogdoches, TX and got a 36 share in afternoon drive.” While KILT didn’t quite achieve a 36 share, it did very well, especially as compared to the last diary- based rankings. Asked for his broad overview of how Country fared under the new system as compared to the diary, Garrison noted, “Cume continues to be the big story. I’ve been back in Houston for five years and the fact that the diary only reflected 400,000 cume (12+) for KILT in a city of 4.2 million did not make sense. Now that the PPM is currency, we know that the cume is almost a million – meaning one in four Houstonians tune into KILT once a week.” (Houston’s first-ever Arbitron PPM showed KILT with a cume of 935,200. Cox’s KKBQ notched 915,000 listeners and its Classic Country KTHT registered 586,700 listeners. Ed.) Bush Punts On Performance Royalties President Bush was in Nashville last Thursday (7/19) and participated in a town-hall style Q & A that had him fielding some tough questions. 1720 Entertainment east coast regional Stacy Blythe gave Country Aircheck the inside scoop of the forum. “He was actually really funny and charming. But the best was when someone got up and asked if he would support a change in law that would allow performers to collect royalties like songwriters and stumped him with industry jargon.” Bush immediately

Dolly Charms Broadway Dolly Parton is scoring a Broadway musical production of Nine To Five based on the popular 1980 movie about three secretaries who get revenge on their boss. The New York Post reports that theater executives who attended a hush-hush staged reading last week were impressed with Parton’s upbeat and witty score, which includes the famous title song. Parton was at the reading, standing at the back of the rehearsal hall, singing along with her songs and charming the pants off theater owners, who are eager to book a show that looks like a winner. Production sources say that when director Joe Mantello (Wicked) lets her know a number doesn’t work, she tosses it out and goes right back to the keyboard. The show is expected to open on Broadway in the 2008-2009 season. Let’s hope Dolly, who is not in the show herself, has the same success Roger Miller did with his score of Big River.

Chart Chat Well-deserved congrats to Kenny Chesney, BNA promoveep Rick Moxley, the BNA promotion staff and everyone in the broader Chesney camp on the blistering seven-weeks-to-the-top run of “Never Wanted Nothing More.” The song, written by Ronnie Bowman and Chris Stapleton, is Chesney’s fastest-rising No. 1, edging nine-week rockets “When The Sun Goes Down” and “There Goes My Life.”

Life Notes Our most heartfelt condolences to KILT/Houston PD Jeff Garrison on the recent passing of his step-father,

months. With that back drop, CA asked if there were any surprises in the PPM data. He said, “The fact that there are not many surprises with PPM could be the biggest shock. The audience behaviors and trends we always knew as programmers are reflected in this data. Among the things we’ve seen in the data: Friday listening is the biggest, working people use the radio the most and compelling and entertaining content wins. It really is a new world – a world of recall vs. real listening. I’m learning everyday and excited about the future of radio. Programmers and performers will make the difference in the PPM world.” Garrison notes another wrinkle is the frequency with which PDs get data. He explains, “We used to get monthly trends as indicators of the quarterly report. Now we get

Marion Holt. He was 84. Holt raised Garrison from the age of 14, and fueled his passion for golf by putting a new set of Hogan Medal irons in his hands almost 30 years ago.

Artist News Brad Paisley has added four more dates to his “Bonfires and Amplifiers Tour.” The just-added shows are Oct. 4 at Detroit’s Palace at Auburn Hills; Nov. 29 at Lexington, KY’s Rupp Arena; Nov. 30 at Charleston, WV’s Civic Center and Dec. 1 at Columbus, OH’s Nationwide Arena. Chely Wright will be the guest speaker and celebrity golfer at the second annual Michael Allen Davidson Foundation 9/11 Golf Tournament at Princeton Junction, NJ’s Mercer Oaks Golf Club. The event, which benefits the foundation named for a victim of the World Trade Center tragedy, will be held August 13.

PPM Hits Houston (continued from page 1) Continuing with his overview of how Country fares with the PPM, Garrison said, “Country performs better overall with PPM -- the shares and the cumes are higher than in the diary-based results. That’s especially true among women, which of course is our target. I think the PPM puts us where we really should have been all along – KILT ranks second among women 25-54, a rank we haven’t held in at least the last five years. We’re No. 2 in mornings with a 7.5 and No. 2 in middays with an 8.6. KILT is also second among 18-49 Women in mornings and middays. For the total week, KILT ranks third 18-49 women with a 6.1 and KKBQ is fifth with a 5.5. These numbers for women are closer to reality than the diary showed.” Although the PPM just became currency in Houston, Garrison has been looking at PPM data for over 18

weekly reports to get ready for the monthly reports that are now the currency.” He also points out that when looking at the new PPM results, one cannot make comparisons to past Arbitron data. “The overall shares shown in the PPM are not comparable to the shares shown in diary-based ratings because the cume in the PPM is so high – it’s almost double the diary-based cume in every demo and daypart. All you can really compare is rank if you want a feel for how a station is doing. Speaking to the entire experience of switching from diaries to PPM, Garrison notes, “Sometimes when things change, people are resistant. I’m really proud to be a part of CBS/Houston. [GM/Market Manager] Laura Morris and our entire KILT team have embraced the new PPM world. We are now living in today and we’re not looking back.” (Country Aircheck was unable to reach KKBQ & KTHT PD Johnny Chiang by press time. His PPM comments will appear in a future issue.)
