Barrett Strong gave Motown its first hit with the Gordy-penned song, Money.
Berry Gordy, Jr. borrowed $800 and started Motown.
The Miracles were Motown’s first group.
The Temptations had a rougher sound than did the Four Tops. With many personnel changes they scored dozens of hits for two decades.
The Supremes, Florence, Diane and Mary, set a new standard.
The Four Tops were consistent hit makers
in the 1960’s.
Brenda Holloway’s ca-reer was cut short in 1964 with the arrival of The Supremes.
Kim Weston was a rising solo artist at Motown and also paired with Marvin Gaye in 1967.
Gladys Knight & the Pips are pop, rock and soul royalty. Consistent hit makers and live concertcrowd-pleasers for decades.
In 1972 Motown left Detroit for sunnier skies in Los Angeles. The music and the business changed. The family had been replaced by a corporation, and it showed. The original Motown labels: Gordy, Motown, Tamla and Soul
