Growing your own food has a multitude of benefits, from improving soils and mental health, to saving resources and providing safe, nutrient dense, cheap if not free food right outside your back (or front!) door. As home gardens become more popular, people are beginning to discover the joys of growing good food. Unfortunately, too often we jump in with the warmth of spring and before you know it the garden is grown up in weeds, the only thing worth harvesting is grasshoppers, and the greens taste terrible. That said, observation and planning are the most important and often overlooked tasks any gardener faces. Well thought out planning using helpful techniques can make gardening less of a chore and insure an abundant crop. This course will teach you how to do just that. Having grown up on a small farm and ranch, he has worked as a city horticultural assistant, a dairy farm herd manager, and a sales associate and volunteer for the largest organic farm in Louisiana. With a strong passion for good, quality food and a diverse background in sustainable gardening and land management, Garrett combines techniques learned along the way to deliver helpful, applicable, and fresh approaches to the home kitchen garden to help save time, money, and the world. What you will learn: A philosophy of home gardening and it’s importance. How to observe the landscape and plan the perfect garden to fit your needs. How to implement your plan and install the garden Basic soil science and the practice/importance of composting Rainwater harvesting and water conservation in the city Earth friendly approaches to weed and pest control How to turn a profit from your garden
