Current Day Scenario

Poor garbage disposal facilities at most places, net result large amount of non-biodegradable waste accumulates at this sites.

Non-bio is often disposed by burning which releases only poisonous gases, this is ultimately the air we breath.

Degradable waste if treated scientifically causes minimum damage & minimum harm to this fragile regions, however non bio-degradable waste has to be scientifically & hygienically treated to get the best results.

It is not degradable, takes hundreds of years to destroy.

It causes tremendous pressure on environment at this location.

Current Day Scenario

Practical issues

Lack of awareness.

Unsorted waste – mixture of degradable & non – bio degradable.

Require proper planning, design & operation.

Strange as it may sound this is the only way to preserve & protect fragile destinations.

What can I as a tourist do ?

Carry the non- biodegradable waste consisting of plastic mineral water bottles, biscuits & chocolate wrappers, used tubes and plastic bags back home.

Page 7: Garbage Management while Holidaying

Many ecologically fragile regions in some other countries follow the same system.

Deposit used non – biodegradable items in a bag on a daily basis.

These items rarely carry any odour.

Crush the plastic bottles so as to made them flat.

What can I as a tourist do ?

If travelling back by car or bus this garbage can easily be put in the boot of your car or bus & disposed at your destination city or town which is more adapt at disposing waste.

How do I go about achieving this task ? When your holiday ends you will be

surprised to know how much garbage has been collected.

On an average each family of four accumulates 1-1/2 to 2 kg. of garbage each day.

If flying back, you dispose this bags at the airport garbage sites.

When using public transport

If travelling back by train bring the bag as an extra piece of garbage & keep it in a secluded place.

It is followed by many western country destinations which are ecologically sensitive areas and have limited capacity for absorbing waste. Eg. Hinterberg – Southwest Germany & Algonquin National Parks Canada.

Is this new ?

Carrying garbage back is not a new concept .

Page 11: Garbage Management while Holidaying

Tourists become aware, will consciously reduce the production or creation of garbage.

Sensitivity will increase, so will bonding between destination & the tourist.

Tourist will become role models for locals to follow.

Life of a destination will increase tremendously.

Advantages to be gained

Page 12: Garbage Management while Holidaying

Non bio-degradable garbage is the greatest cause for destinations to disappear from the face of the earth.

Think twice, produce less garbage while holidaying & if you do so bring the non bio-degradable portion back with you.

We are not the last generation on Planet Earth, many others will follow.
