The famous Granny Vine who branded the bottom of an indian with her iron after he walked in and demanded "muck-a-muck" (a drink of whiskey) arrived in Victoria in 1853. Indians called her "Mesachie Tyee" - Devil Spirit . She was a midwife for the Metchosin, Colwood, Sooke, and Rocky Point districts. Pioneers said she never lost a mother or child in all her years of service. She is buried near the entrance to St. Mary's church.

Thomas: Arrived in January 1853 on the third voyage of the Norman Morison with wife Mary Ann and 10-year old daughter Barbara Ellen. Mr. Reid was a seafairing man and was disgusted with the outlook for the colony and at once departed for home where he soon died [Footprints - edited by Marion I. Helgesen].

Edward: Emigrated in 1851 from Kings Lynn, Norfolk, England. Credited with piloting the first coal-laden barge out of Nanaimo in tow of the brig "Cyres", with Capt. Briggs in command. He purchased 666 acres at Pedder Bay in 1858 for $5 an acre and named his house "Glenrosa" (Section 40 in 1858, 41 &42 in 1874, 29 & 30 in 1874). House was destroyed by fire on Saturday, September 13, 1881. A second house was built (Section 42) and the Vines lived there until 1895.
