all know that motorcycle service is essential. It’s just a fact of life that all components will need to be replaced or adjusted at some point on a bike. The electrical system is a typical example of a system that requires special attention for service and inspection, because of the long life of a classic. For example, the headlight on many older bikes moves with the handlebars, so the wiring will continually move, too. This movement can cause cha�ng and work hardening of the wires (the copper core work hardens) and the associated connectors. It’s important to remove the seat, side panels and fuel tank to check electrical components and the wiring. In addition, the charging and ignition wires should be traced (followed) from the engine to their destination.

Battery Terminals

Shop manuals should be consulted for location of various electrical items. In particular, the main fuse (commonly an in-line fuse) and its housing should be checked. These fuses and their holders are normally located next to the bike’s battery. Corrosion around the batteries connector terminals is common; periodic replacement is the safest way to ensure the fuse holder is in good condition, or regular lubrication (use dielectric grease) as a minimum. Motorcycle batteries are exposed to harsh conditions, much more so than batteries �tted inside a car. The more common lead acid battery will give many years of service if it is regularly maintained.

Voltage Check

A regular check of the battery’s electrolyte solution is essential - distilled water only should be used for topping up. In addition to the water level, the terminals should be checked for tightness and also to remove any corrosion. A voltage check (DC) will reveal a lot about the internal condition of a battery. Any recording below 10 volts (on a 12-volt system) indicates a bad cell necessitating replacement of the battery. All lights and bulbs should be periodically checked for cleanliness and to ensure the connections are not becoming corroded.

Brake Light Switch

Many classic bikes are �tted with the plunger type rear brake light switch. These switches are exposed to the elements and have a tendency to become corroded; typically, the rear brake light will stay on after the pedal is released. Although they can be disassembled and cleaned, it is advisable to replace them if they become corroded.

Ignition systems require very little maintenance other than to check the contact points gap (where �tted) periodically. However, the HT lead and plug cap should be inspected and replaced if they show any signs of aging (typically cracking of the insulation material will be evident).

For the most part, electrical systems will operate trouble free for many miles or years. However, sudden complete failure can, in most cases, be avoided by these simple checks and some basic maintenance.

Determine the degree of conformity of the NANOPROTECH product’s protective properties. The testing procedure is based on comparison of corrosion test results on samples before and after application of the aerosol. The contactless transformers installed in distribution cabinets were used as

samples and were exposed to corrosion due to high humidity (up to 100%) and high temperature (up to 35C).
