HEAD COACH, LEWIS JACKSONLewis Jackson, one of the all-time greats in school history, will be returning for his 11th year as head basketball coach at Alabama State University.

Jackson was a legend as a player at ASU. The Wetumpka, Ala., native became his alma mater’s head coach in June 2005, catapulting the former player and assistant coach to the top of the program he helped build into a Southwestern Athletic Confer-ence (SWAC) powerhouse.

Jackson had served as an assistant as ASU since the 2000-01 season and has been an integral part of the program’s success. ASU has won two SWAC Tournament Champion-ships (2009, 2011) and earned NCAA Tournament berths with those championships. He also led the Hornets to regular season conference titles in 2008 and again a year later in 2009. Last season he led the Hornets to a program first appearance in the CollegeInsider’s Tourna-ment.

The 2014-15 season saw the Hornets near the top of the SWAC the entire season finishing the season with a 19-10 overall record and a second-place conference finish with a 14-4 record.

Following the season Jamel Waters and Maurice Strong were named All-SWAC while Steve Rogers was named the SWAC Freshman of the Year.

Jackson led the team to a turnaround during the 2013-14 season, finishing the year with a 19-13 record, including a tie for second place in the SWAC with a 12-6 record. Jamel Waters and Bobby Brown were named to the All-SWAC team following the season.

The Hornets season saw them advance to the semifinals of the con-ference tournament and earning a first-ever invitation to the College-Insider.com Tournament (CIT) where they faced Sam Houston State in the opening round.

The 2012-13 turned out to be one of the most challenging seasons’ since Jackson took over the program. The team consisted of 10 new players and the scheduled included the likes of Middle Tennessee, Flor-ida, Central Florida and Detroit, all 20-win programs and post-season tournament participants.

ASU rebounded once Southwestern Athletic Conference play started and finished the season tied for fifth at 8-10. Of the 10 losses, seven were by 10 points or less.

In 2011-12 Jackson led ASU to a 12-19 overall season, playing what may have been the toughest schedule in the history of the program. Of the team’s 19 losses, 10 of those were by seven points or less and that included four losses by three points or less.

Jackson led the Hornets during a four-year run from the 2007-08 sea-son through the 2010-11 season which saw ASU win two SWAC Regular Season championships, two SWAC Tournament titles, make appearanc-es in two NCAA Tournaments and an NIT appearance.

The 2010-11 year was two seasons in one as ASU season struggled the first half of the season and then picked up steam in the second winning 11 of their final 12 regular season games which culminated in a SWAC Tournament Championship and another trip to the NCAA Tournament.

The 2009-10 season marked the third consecutive year that ASU finished with a winning record. The Hornets made it to the semi-final

round of the SWAC tournament. The team included a pair of First Team All-SWAC players - Menji Mundadi and Tremayne Moorer.

In 2008-09, Jackson guided the Hornets to a 22-10 mark and a 16-2 conference record en route to a second consecutive SWAC regular season crown. In addition, ASU captured the SWAC Tournament title earning the conference’s automatic NCAA Tournament berth.

In 2007-08, Jackson led Alabama State to the SWAC regular season championship with a 15-3 record, finishing the season 20-11 overall with an appearance in the NIT. The Hornets never lost back-to-back SWAC games that season and outscored their league opponents by more than 11 points per game.

Jackson began learning his up-tempo, full-court style as a graduate assistant at ASU under the late James Oliver Sr. Over the next five years, he served as a basketball instructor. In 1998, he coached The Challenge--an Amateur Athletic Union team that featured some of the top high school talent in the country, including stars Alvin Pettway and Tyrone Levett.

As strong as his coaching resume has been, Jackson’s credentials as a player are equally as impressive. While playing for Wetumpka High, Jackson led his team to back-to-back state championships and was twice chosen as Most Valuable Player of the state tournament.

Jackson then selected ASU to continue his basketball career, becom-ing one of the best players in school history. After breaking into the starting lineup four games into his freshman season, he went on to score 2,203 points--ranking fourth on ASU’s all-time scoring list.

After his senior season in 1984, Jackson was named SWAC Player of the Year, Black College Basketball Player of the Year and a Black Col-lege All-American. He was drafted by the Golden State Warriors in the third round and received an invitation to try out for the United States Olympic basketball team. He would ultimately play professionally in Australia, Canada and the Philippines before retiring in 1990.

In 1999, Jackson was inducted into the SWAC Hall of Fame. A year later, he was selected for inclusion in the Alabama State University Hall of Fame. His number, 33, is retired by ASU and hangs in the Dunn-Oliver Acadome. Wetumpka High School retired both numbers Jackson donned, 34 and 35.

Jackson is married to ASU’s head women’s basketball coach, Freda Freeman-Jackson. They have two children: Antron and Bianca.

GAME RECAPSEXHIBITIONOctober 30, 2017Montgomery, Ala. | Dunn-Oliver Acadome

The Alabama State University men’s basket-ball team used key second half free throws and a key defensive stop to come away with a 68-62 victory over Fort Valley State Univer-sity in an exhibition game at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome Monday night. After Fort Valley State trimmed the lead to 63-62 with 1:13 remaining in the second half, before Austin Rogers knocked down one free throw to extend the lead to 64-62. The Hornets connected on 71.4 (15-of-21) percent from the free throw line in the second half after attempting just one in the first half. He was met by Austin Rogers and Reginald Gee, who combined for the black and kept the Wildcats from trimming the deficit to two. Fort Valley State was unable to get another shot off before the buzzer went off. GAME 1November 10, 2017Starkville, Miss. | Humphrey Coliseum

The Alabama State University men’s basket-ball team could not overcome a quick start by Mississippi State University, dropping their opener 96-68 at Humphrey Coliseum Friday night. “It was a tough game for us,” Alabama State head coach Lewis Jackson said. “I thought Mississippi State did an outstanding job of getting out and running, and they attacked the rim on us all night. We knew it was going to be tough, especially when you start three guys who haven’t played at the Division I bas-ketball before at this level. “I saw some good things from our team, we fought and never quit. The guys kept listening and kept grinding. We didn’t shoot the ball well from the free throw line, but there is a lot of room for growth on this team. I like what this team can become. We are going to con-tinue to work and get after it, and with nine new players the maturation process is going to take some time. We just have to continue to work and get some reps under our belt, and we going to be okay.” Jacoby Ross scored a career-high 17 points of the bench, including hitting six three points; while Ed Jones added 16 points and six rebounds as he converted on 7-of-11 of his shots. Alabama State shot 37.3 (25-of-67) percent from the floor and 26.9 (7-of-26) percent from beyond the arc. They also shot 50 (11-of-22) percent from the free throw line, and forced 14 Mississippi State turnovers.Official Basketball Box Score -- Game Totals -- Final StatisticsAlabama State vs Mississippi State11-10-17 5:30 p.m. at Starkville, Miss. Jacoby Ross paced four players in double fig-ures against Savannah State, but the Tigers proved too much down the stretch as they pulled away for a 101-97 victory over Alabama State at the Cayman Islands Classic – Chatta-nooga Bracket Tuesday evening. Ross led Alabama State (0-6) with a ca-reer-high 20 points, hitting five three-pointers and dishing out three assists. Reginald Gee added 19, connecting on four three-pointers, while Gene Davis and Branden Johnson each added 11. Johnson finished with his first dou-ble-double of his career with 11 rebounds. Meanwhile, Dexter McClanahan led Savan-nah State (2-3) with 17 points off the bench. Isaiah Felder and Alante Fenner each added 16, with Fenner hitting all 10 of his free throw attempts. Zach Sellers chipped in 14 and Mar-cus Glenn 10 for the Tigers. Trailing 83-74, Ross took over the game for the Hornets as he trimmed the lead to just one with a pair of three-pointers and a three-point play the old-fashioned way with 3:52 to play (87-86). After a three-pointer from Savannah State extended the lead to 90-86, Gee trimmed the deficit to 90-88 with 2:45 to play on a pair of free throws. Alabama State had a chance to tie the game with 2:29 to play but missed a free throw, and then turned the ball over following an inbounds play. Savannah State took advan-tage and closed the game scoring nine of the game’s final 15 points.
