By Doug DornathSouth Central Calhoun’s varsity boys

golf team returns six letterwinners to this year’s squad and from a team that finished 7-3 in Twin Lakes Conference dual meet play a season ago. The Titans also placed third in the conference tournament while placing sixth at a very challenging Class 2A sectional meet a season ago.

“We should compete for one of the top

three spots in the conference,” said SCC head boys golf coach Barry Stevens. “East Sac is the favorite to repeat as champions with SCC, Alta-Aurelia, Prairie Valley and Pocahontas vying for top three places. Our season will depend on how our younger squad responds to meet pressure and how they handle the mental part of the golf game.”

Among the returning letterwinners for

the Titans include juniors Colin Brown, Trenton Dorman and Kory McCarter and sophomores Cyle King, Colin Carlson and Conner Ludwig.

“We will look to Conner Ludwig and Cyle King to lead the team scoring-wise with juniors Kory McCarter and Colin Brown adding leadership, and sophomore Colin Carlson, who finished ninth place at last year’s conference tournament, providing valuable experience,” said Stevens. “Trenton Dorman, with limited varsity time last year, needs to step up and help contribute to this year’s team effort. Veteran team members Ryan Nicholson, Marcus Feldhans and Brandon Pedersen and freshmen newcomers Jonas Otto and Micah Lantz look to compete for the 5 and 6 varsity spots.”

Some of the top returning athletes also hoping to crack the varsity line-up include senior Marcus Feldhaus, junior Ryan Nicholson and sophomore Brandon Pedersen.

The Titans host four regular season

varsity meets at Lake City Country Club this spring along with the Class 2A sectional tournament May 16.

“We also host our area 2A sectional tournament this year, which will include East Sac, St. Edmond and OA-BCIG. It will be tough to advance as a team but not impossible and we have some changes of advancing a couple of individuals if they can put their complete games together on sectional day,” said Stevens.

The 2013-14 SCC high school boys golf roster includes:

Seniors — Marcus Feldhaus, Austin Thomas.

Juniors — Jordan Batta, Colin Brown, Trenton Dorman, Kory McCarter, Ryan Nicholson, Aubrey Richardson, Brad Richardson, Joel Wernimont.

Sophomores — Colin Carlson, Cyle King, Carter Ludwig, Conner Ludwig, Brandon Pedersen, Nick Robinson.

Freshmen — Jesse Casey, Micah Lantz, Jonas Otto, Ben Wozniak.

By Doug DornathWith three returning letterwinners

from the junior class this spring — Sadie Swank, Katie Welander and Jona Grodahl — the 2013-14 South Central Calhoun’s varsity girls golf team will be looking for three more players from its young squad to move into the varsity line-up as the season begins.

The Titans, under the leadership of Scott Trost, hope to improve upon the team’s fourth place team finish in the conference from a year ago.

“With three of our top four golfers returning from last year’s fourth place finish, I look for us to maybe move to a higher placement in the conference this year,” said coach Trost. “Sadie Swank and Katie Welander have been our top two leaders for a couple of seasons now and both girls are taking turns at being our low golfer at meets. We will look to them to again set the tone for this season. Jona Grodahl was our most promising newcomer last season, so we will look to her to fill out our top four roster spots.

“Jenn Hood made steady improvement throughout last season, eventually cracking the varsity lineup later in the season,” added Trost. “Rachel Wedemeyer played a few varsity matches last season and looks to possibly fill one of the varsity spots full time this season. Lauren Shipley, Julia Seil and Mallory Willett played at the JV level last season and one of them will need to step up into a varsity slot this season. Our two freshmen newcomers, Kelsi Carlson and Megan Ukena, will see time at the JV level while they work on improving their skills.”

Welander is the team’s returning all-conference player while Swank is the team’s returning MVP (lowest team average) from a year ago. Swank averaged a score of 50.8 per nine holes a season ago while Welander averaged a nine-hole average of 52.8 strokes.

Important dates for the Titans this spring on the links include the conference tournament at Lakeside Golf Course in Fort Dodge May 5 and the Class 2A regional tournament at a site to be determined May 16. The Titans also host meets April 14 against Prairie

Valley, April 24 against Pocahontas Area and April 12 at Southeast Webster-Grand at Lake City Country Club. The Titans will play at Twin Lakes Golf Course May 1 against St. Mary’s. SCC will also be playing in the OA-BCIG Tournament this spring at Ida Grove May 3 as they placed third as a team at that tournament a season ago.

By Doug DornathWith 12 returning varsity letterwinners

including three returning state qualifiers, the 2013-14 South Central Calhoun varsity boys track team has a lot to look forward to this spring as the outdoor season began for the Titans March 31.

“I think we’ll have a little bit of everything this year,” said SCC head boys track coach Bryan Case. “We should score in most events on a consistent basis with our mid-distance/distance and hurdle events being our strong suits. We need to build some depth in all areas and continue to develop our overall speed.”

Senior Jake Petzenhauser, who is a three-time state qualifier for the Titans, is the top returning athlete for the Titans as he placed sixth overall in the 400-meter hurdles a season ago. Fellow senior Sam Spencer qualified for the state track meet in 2013 in the high jump. Kyler Case is another senior

with state track meet experience as he was a member of the Titans 4x100 relay team that advanced to state a few seasons ago.

Other returning letterwinners who helped the Titans a season ago include seniors Matt Nieland, Cody Schoop, juniors Ryan Daisy, Tanner Schrad, Zach Ludwig, Lucas Farrington, Dylan Addison and Blake Fonken and sophomore Derrick Henkenius.

In the conference, several teams have many returning letterwinners as the leagues teams will compete in the conference championships at Burnside May 6.

“Manson has to the pre-season favorite coming off back-to-back state titles,” said coach Case of the Twin Lakes Conference meet. “Our conference will be very good as a whole, and I’m hoping our team will finish towards the top and contend for the conference championship.

“I’m really looking forward to the track

and field season,” added coach Case. “We have a lot of kids who are eager to compete and get better on a daily basis. We have good kids who are fun to be around and pull for each other. I’m excited to see what this team can do.”

The Titans have a pair of home meets coming up later this season at Lake City as they host a pair of co-ed meets. SCC hosts the Ross Samuelson Co-Ed meet Friday, May 2. On Thursday, May 8, the Titans will compete at the Jim Yunek Relays. Both meets start at 4:30 p.m.

On May 15, the Titans will be competing in a Class 2A state qualifying track meet at a site to be determined.

The 2013-14 SCC boys track roster included (alphabetical):

By Doug DornathSouth Central Calhoun’s varsity girls

track team has a wide array of returning talent on its 2013-14 squad this spring.

“We have considerable track and fi eld experience returning with a long list of letterwinners,” said SCC coach Brian Knapp. “We will also be very strong in the 800 meter distances on up. We lack depth in the short sprint areas. We have some quality sprinters returning, just not the depth we are used to.”

The Titans have two athletes from last year’s squad who competed at the state track meet — junior Tyffaney Toms in the shot put and senior Ashley Henkenius in both the 100 and 200 meter dashes.

Other returning letterwinners for the Titans this spring include seniors Abby Collison, Maria Dischler, Taylor Haberl and Leah Spyker, juniors Maggie Anderson, Kori Assman, Haley Birks, Hannah Corey and Michaela Graffunder and sophomores

Mady Dick and Jadyn Khommanyvong. Some of the top incoming freshmen

include Sydney Batz, Allison Birks, Abby Clark, Katelyn Decker, Megan Hardy, Emily Henkenius and Aliyah Taylor.

A season ago, the Titans placed sixth as a team at the 2013 Twin Lakes Conference meet. SCC was seventh overall at the Class 2A regional qualifying meet at Ogden. The 2014 TLC meet is scheduled for May 6 in Burnside.

“I would pick East Sac County and Pocahontas Area as favorites,” said Knapp of the TLC conference meet. “Manson-NW has probably the best individual track and fi eld athlete in Elle Herzberg, However, our Ashley Henkenius will be right there to challenge in the individual sprint events. Because of our depth and strength in fi eld events, we should fair well in the TLC.

“This team will have to learn to compete as an entire team,” said Knapp. “Everybody needs to understand their role in our overall

team success and then work to achieve at their highest individual levels for the team to ultimately succeed.”

The Titans have two home meets left on their schedule including the Ross Samuelson Co-Ed Relays May 2 in Lake City and the Jim Yunek Relays on May 8 also in Lake City.

The Titans will compete at a Class 2A state qualifying meet at a site to be determined Thursday, May 15. The 2014 state track meet begins May 22 at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.
