FROM THE COVER

Some players can change a game in an instant--in just one play. Northern Colorado senior Dominic Gunn is one of those players, and he might be the very best in the

Big Sky Conference. He’s a special talent for the Bears’ special teams.

S ome call them “game changers”--others call them “x-factors.” Whatever you call

them, you can find them anywhere on the field, and these football players have the rare ability to change a game with just one play.

They are key to any good team, and Northern Colorado has one of the very best in the Big Sky Conference, if not the country.

Dominic Gunn has become the Bears’ game changer (that’s what we’ll go with) by providing explosive plays in an area of the game that can sometimes be forgotten: special teams.

If you take a look at the Northern Colorado record book, you’ll see Gunn’s name already listed atop several NCAA Division I and all-time school marks.

With one punt return of 12 yards last week against Cal Poly, the senior from Aurora broke his own single-season NCAA Division I school record for punt-return yards (248). He now sits at 256 in the category and still has five games left to

improve upon his own mark.“I really think I’ve improved on just going out

there and playing,” Gunn says. “I don’t think as much and just let it be natural and trust in what I’ve been learning these past five years--what the coaches have been teaching me. I just want to go out there and do it. Just go out there and fly around and let the bullets fly and do what I do.”

With a defense as stout as Northern Colorado’s, it pays to have a returner as dangerous as Gunn because he gets plenty of opportunities to make a play.

Already this season he has taken a punt back to the house--breaking open a 74-yard return to give the Bears a 10-7 lead in the second quarter of a road game against Sacramento State.

That score was the Bears’ first in 11 years on a punt return after Vincent Jackson (now with the

Tampa Bay Buccaneers) brought one back 79 yards against North Dakota State.

“I’m trying to bust a big one,” Gunn says. “I just go out there and tell myself, ‘This is the one. Let’s go . Every time.’ Once you pass that first line, it’s time for a big one. You get past that first line of defenders [and] you can break it at any time.”

Gunn then nearly had another punt-return touchdown a week earlier against Colorado Mesa, when he authored a return of 67 yards before being tackled at the 4-yard line.

Having a player with Gunn’s ability gives Northern Colorado head coach Earnest Collins Jr. a weapon that can, at the very least, win the position-field battle.

At his best, Gunn can provide enough punch to win a football game.

“Anytime you can get a game-changer like that on special teams, it’s always a 35, 40-yard swing any possession,” Collins says. “I tell our guys, ‘If you can just give Dom enough time to catch it and get his eyes downfield he’s going to make two or three people miss, and that’s going to be at least 10 to 15 yards for us.

“If you give him five to 10 yards it could be a touchdown. It’s just about giving him time.”

One team that knows just what kind of impact Gunn can have is the Montana Grizzlies. Last season, as a junior, Gunn began the second half in Missoula with what was then a career-best 94-yard kick return touchdown. He racked up a career-high 215 all-purpose yards on the day.

This season, to celebrate his final Homecoming game, Gunn once again scored on the second-half kickoff, this time igniting the crowd with a 98-yard return that cut Montana’s lead to 10-7.

Returning kicks has been something Gunn has ex-celled at for the Bears his entire career. He owns the school’s all-time career kick-return record (1,969) and, after racking up 104 yards on five returns against Cal Poly, he sits just 31 yards shy of becom-ing the Bears’ first 2,000-yard kick returner.

While Gunn has always played an integral role in Northern Colorado’s special teams units, he’s proven he has the ability to be a game changer on

the offensive side of the ball, too, as he’s developed into one of the Bears’ biggest threats in the passing game, too. He enters today’s game with the Bears’ second-most receiving yards this year (320).

“I’m just trying to hone in the techniques and route running and catching everything,” Gunn says. “That’s a big emphasis, trying to catch everything. Getting open, being patient, trusting the quarter-back, getting to my depth--just everything. I’ve just amped everything up from previous years.”

Over the last two seasons Gunn has quietly become one of junior quarterback Seth Lobato’s favorite targets--having caught at least one pass in 11 straight games.

“Dom is a dynamic playmaker, really,” Lobato says. “Return-game guy, wide receiver, he can do some reverses and stuff. You need guys like that on your team. I can’t say enough about Dom’s effort and his enthusiasm and intensity on the field.”

It’s his dual-threat ability that sets Gunn apart in the Big Sky. After putting up 214 more all-purpose yards against Cal Poly last week, he improved his career number in the category to 3,644 yards--good for fifth most in school history and the most in the Bears’ Division I history.

His explosive play in the return game has even caught the eye of some NFL scouts.

“I think Dom’s figured out he has to be a player for us, and he’s got to step up for us,” Collins says. “He’s got the tools, and he’s got NFL scouts coming to look at him now, and like I told him: that just ups the stakes for him.”

While he may not be the team’s vocal leader, the soft-spoken Gunn knows his play on the field must serve as an example to the rest of his teammates. There’s no doubt he’s willing to do whatever it takes to help his program get back on track before his career is done.

“It really just comes down to trust,” Gunn says. “The offense has to trust the defense, the defense has to trust us and everyone trust special teams. Everyone just has to do their own assignment. Don’t worry about everybody else. Just do your job each play, and things will happen for themselves. We just need to come together.”

TALKOF THE

TOWNI n the fall of 2009, City of Greeley

staff members attended a Northern Colorado Communications class where students described their perceptions of Greeley. Wanting to bridge the cultural gap, City staff then recruited students to spearhead a campaign to get UNC students off

campus and discover “their home away from home”. Other organizations joined

the project, including the Greeley Chamber of Commerce, the Downtown Development Authori-

ty, and representatives from the University. In the spring of 2010, the “Operation Bear

Aware (OBA)” campaign was born and Greeley began to focus on becoming a college town.

The first goal was to encourage and then mea-sure the number of students who shopped and dined at local businesses or used City facilities.

Students were asked to sign up whenever they visited OBA businesses, and, in addition to win-ning prizes, they were given a challenge: If 6,000 students signed up, the City of Greeley would

name portions of 11th Avenue “Bears Boulevard.” In four semesters, more than 6,000 students

met that challenge, and we celebrate that renam-ing at today’s football game!

To further strengthen the relationship between students and the City, efforts have continued for the 2012-13 school year. “Bear Biz” is the newest campaign moniker, and specific businesses have agreed to provide a discount to any Northern Colorado student who shows their student ID.

Those businesses include coffee shops, restaurants, financial institutions, entertainment venues, retail shops and more.

A list of all participants and the discounts they offer can be found at www.bearbizgreeley.com. “Bear Biz” is also on Facebook and Twitter.

The “Bear Biz” campaign, started and continued on by a multitude of impressive UNC students, offers its most sincere welcome to all Northern Colorado students, parents, faculty and staff. You are invited to visit and support our participating local businesses and see that Greeley is a true college town!
