TORONTO FC NEW YORK CITY FC GAME NOTES | SAT, MAR. 7, 2020
Bill Manning was named President of Toronto FC on October 12, 2015. Under his direction, TFC has experienced historic success, both on and off the field. During his five seasons as President, Manning has overseen an organization that won the 2017 MLS Cup, the 2017 MLS Supporters Shield with a league-record 69 regular season points, the 2016, 2017 and 2019 MLS Eastern Conference Championships and the 2016, 2017 and 2018 Canadian Championships. In 2018, TFC were also runners up in the prestigious Concacaf Champions League. In addition to his leadership role with TFC, Manning also serves as President of the Toronto Argonauts of the Canadian Football League.
Manning joined Toronto FC after spending the previous eight seasons as President of Real Salt Lake (RSL) and Rio Tinto Stadium. During his time with RSL, Manning helped to transform the club into a consistent winner – RSL won the 2009 MLS Cup championship— and a model franchise off the pitch, where both season tickets and sponsorships more than tripled during his tenure. The club also won the Eastern Conference title (2009), the Western Conference title (2013) and were CONCACAF Champions League runners-up (2011), U.S. Open Cup runners-up (2013) and MLS Cup runners-up (2013). Manning was the recipient of the Major League Soccer Doug Hamilton Executive of the Year award in both 2012 and 2014. While at RSL, Manning sold
naming rights to Rio Tinto Stadium which successfully opened in fall of 2008, and in 2013 negotiated the 10-year LifeVantage jersey partnership for the club.
Manning’s experience in sports management spans more than 25 years. In addition to his work in Major League Soccer, Manning has held executive positions with the National Football League’s Philadelphia Eagles and the National Basketball Association’s Houston Rockets. A native of Massapequa, New York, Manning was a nationally-recognized collegiate soccer player at the University of Bridgeport where, as a senior in 1986 Manning led his team to a NCAA final four appearance while earning first-team All-America honors. Manning continued his playing career after college and advanced to two U.S. Open Cup finals with the Brooklyn Italians, winning the title in 1991. He also played professionally in the United Soccer League (USL) with the Penn-Jersey Spirit (1991), the Valley Golden Eagles (1993) and New York Fever (1994-95). Manning also earned a U.S. Soccer National “A” Coaching License in 2001. In March 2018 Manning was honored in his home state for his accomplishments in the game at the 6th annual New York City Soccer Gala. While still playing in the USL, Manning began his career in sports management, working in the front office of the Continental Indoor Soccer League in 1993 and for the New York Fever in 1994-95. Ali Curtis was named General Manager of Toronto FC on January 4, 2019. Curtis joined TFC having previously served as Sporting Director for the New York Red Bulls and Senior Director of Player Relations and Competition for Major League Soccer.
In his role with TFC, Curtis oversees player acquisition and scouting, coaching staff, technical staff and management of the soccer operations budget and salary cap. Additionally, Curtis oversees the staff of both TFC II and the TFC Academy.
With the Red Bulls, Curtis led an organization that won the 2015 Supporters’ Shield with an 18-10-6 record and league-best +19 goal differential. The 18 regular seasons wins, along with 12 wins at home and 60 points earned, set new club records. The Red Bulls also finished on top of the 2016 Eastern Conference standings. In addition to MLS success, Red Bulls II, the club’s second team, were United Soccer League (USL) champions in 2016. Under Curtis’ watch, the Red Bulls signed and developed a number of academy players, including Tyler Adams (now with RB Leipzig in the German Bundesliga) and Alex Muyl. Curtis also signed players such as 2018 MLS Defender of the Year Aaron Long, who began in the organization as a USL player.
Before joining the Red Bulls, Curtis spent seven seasons working for Major League Soccer, first as part of the Player Relations and Competition Department and as the Special Assistant to the Office of the Commissioner. Curtis was promoted to Senior Director of Player Relations and Competition in 2011 where he oversaw MLS club budgets, negotiating over 200 player contracts per year, while leading key areas of renegotiation of the current Collective Bargaining Agreement and the MLS Player Development Committee.
Curtis, 41, also supervised the MLS Homegrown Player Program, which has resulted in 20-40 signings per year and was responsible for the league-to-league strategic partnership that led to the MLS/USL PRO Club affiliations.
Along with his MLS experience, Curtis worked as an analyst for JP Morgan Chase Private Bank from 2004-2007 in Chicago and Los Angeles.
As a player, Curtis was the second overall pick in the 2001 MLS SuperDraft by the Tampa Bay Mutiny. A forward, Curtis spent four seasons in MLS with Tampa Bay, D.C. United and FC Dallas (formerly the Dallas Burn). In four seasons, Curtis made 65 total appearances (35 starts) while scoring nine goals and adding eight assists. At Duke University, Curtis earned the 1999 Hermann and the 2000 MAC Award as the nation’s best player. The awards have since been combined into the MAC Hermann award.
Curtis is married to Aubree and has two children, Adam and Norah.

In addition, Vanney led Toronto FC into the finals of the 2018 Concacaf Champions League, where TFC fell to Chivas Guadalajara on penalties (4-2). During the Champions League run, TFC defeated Mexican and Continental powerhouses Tigres UANL and Club Amèrica to earn a spot in the finals.
Prior to joining Toronto FC, Vanney held titles of director of soccer operations and director of Real Salt Lake-Arizona Youth Academy at Grande Sports World. It was there that he oversaw program and business development at the Grande Sports World facility. Vanney also held a dual role at Chivas USA from 2011-2012 as assistant coach under Robin Fraser and technical director of the youth academy.

Vanney was traded to the Colorado Rapids in January 2007, and then to D.C. United later that same season. Vanney rejoined the LA Galaxy in February 2008 and retired at the conclusion of the season. During his playing career, Vanney earned 36 caps and scored one goal for the United States Men’s National team. Vanney was added to the U.S. 2002 FIFA World Cup preliminary squad, but missed the tournament due to injury. He was also part of the U.S. side that won the 2005 CONCACAF Gold Cup.
Vanney lives in Toronto with his wife, Amy and their four children.
