CATEGORICAL WON-LOST-TIED HEAD COACH CALEB PORTEROne of the most successful coaches in NCAA history, Caleb Porter was named the Timbers head coach on Aug. 29, 2012, and joins the club following seven seasons as the head coach at the University of Akron from 2006-12. He finished his time at Akron with a career mark of 123-18-17 and owned the highest winning percentage (0.832) among all active Division I coaches. Porter has helped lead the Timbers to a positive result in 13 of the team’s first 14 matches of the 2013 MLS season, includ-ing a current club-record, 12-game unbeaten stretch. Porter has been named the MLSsoccer.com Coach of the Week twice this year (Week 6, Week 9).

Porter built Akron men’s soccer into a perennial national championship contender, leading the Zips to five consecutive trips to the NCAA tournament’s Round of 16 (2008-12), back-to-back NCAA College Cup appearances in 2009 and 2010, and the school’s first national title in any sport in 2010. In all, he guided Akron to seven Mid-American Conference (MAC) regular-season championships and five MAC Tourna-ment titles. Porter set multiple NCAA records at Akron, including a 48-match, home unbeaten streak (44-0-4) from 2008-11 and a 47-match unbeaten streak (44-0-3) in conference play from 2006-12.

From Kalamazoo, Mich., Porter garnered numerous honors while at Akron, including NSCAA National Coach of the Year in 2009. He was a three-time NSCAA All-Ohio Coach of the Year (2008-09, 2011) and received MAC Coach of the Year honors six straight years from 2007-12. Porter became the fastest coach in program history to reach 100 career wins, accomplishing the feat in just 126 matches. He is also among the fastest all-time in NCAA history to the century mark, reaching the milestone in fewer games than collegiate Hall of Fame and current MLS coaches Bruce Arena (140; Virginia) and Sigi Schmid (136; UCLA). While at Akron, Porter recruited and developed more than a dozen Zips players who have gone on to professional careers, many plying their trade in Major League Soccer. He had an MLS-record five former players selected in the first round of the 2011 MLS SuperDraft and seven selected overall that year. Under Porter’s guidance, Portland’s Darlington Nagbe and former Akron standout Teal Bunbury were recipients of the MAC Hermann Trophy, awarded to the nation’s top col-legiate player.

Porter also served as the head coach of the U.S. U-23 Men’s National Team during 2012 CONCACAF Olympic qualifying and spent three years as an assistant coach on the U.S. U-18 National Team from 2009-11. Prior to joining Akron, Porter was an assistant coach for six years (2000-05) at Indiana Univer-sity, helping the school make six NCAA tournament appearances, win back-to-back national champion-ships in 2003 and 2004 and claim five Big Ten Conference titles.

As a player, Porter was the 27th overall pick by the San Jose Clash in the 1998 MLS College Draft. He spent time with San Jose and the Tampa Bay Mutiny before a knee injury ended his playing career in 2000. Porter also played for the U.S. National B Team from 1996-97, winning a bronze medal at the 1997 World University Games.

He had a successful collegiate playing career at Indiana, where he was a three-year captain, a three-time All-Big Ten honoree and a four-year letter winner. Porter led the Hoosiers to four conference titles, four NCAA tournament appearances – twice advancing to the College Cup. As a senior, Porter captained IU to 23 consecutive wins before losing to eventual national champion UCLA in the national semifinals and was the runner-up for the 1997 Hermann Trophy.

Porter graduated from Indiana in 1998 with a degree in sports management. He and his wife, Andrea, have three children – two sons, Colin and Jake, and a daughter, Stella Jane.

IMPRESSIVE NUMBERS

TAMPA BAY ROWDIES AT PORTLAND TIMBERSWEDNESDAY, JUNE 12, 2013

ROWDIES CONNECTIONFlorida native Keith Savage spent the 2009 and 2010 USL First Division seasons as a midfielder for the second-division Timbers. Savage, the son of former U.S Men’s National Team defender Bruce Savage, joined the Tampa Bay Rowdies in 2011. The team was known as FC Tampa Bay before changing its name.

Savage appeared in 30 regular-season games for the Timbers during the 2009 season, helping lead the team to the Commissioner’s Cup with the best regular-season record in the league. Savage was a teammate of current Timbers as-sistant coach Cameron Knowles, defender Futty Danso, midfielder Kalif Alhassan and forward Bright Dike during his two seasons with the team.

TIMBERS DRAW CHICAGO 2-2 ON THE ROADMidfielders Diego Valeri and Ben Zemanski each scored goals and forward Fred-eric Piquionne registered two assists as the Timbers played the Chicago Fire to a 2-2 draw at Toyota Park on June 8, extending their MLS-club record unbeaten streak to 12 games. After hitting the goal frame three times in the opening four minutes of the match, the Timbers struck for the opening goal in the 33rd minute from Valeri. Portland then doubled its lead, 2-0, as Piquionne set up Zemanski for a strike in the 58th minute. But the Fire stormed back late in the match. After trimming the deficit 2-1 on a goal by Mike Magee, the Fire received a free-kick goal from substitute Daniel Paladini from just outside the box in the 82nd minute to level the score.

SCOUTING THE ROWDIESHead coach Ricky Hill’s squad is currently in fourth place in the eight-team North American Soccer League (NASL) in the spring season. The NASL splits the year into two seasons (spring and fall). Tampa Bay is 3-3-3 (9pts) in nine regular-season games. The Rowdies, the defending NASL champions, are led by 28-year-old Bulgarian forward Georgi Hristov’s four goals this season. Hristov has scored three of the team’s four goals in the 2013 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup in wins over VSI Tampa Bay FC (USL PRO) and Seattle Sounders FC.

The Rowdies are 4-1-1 on the road in all competitions this season. Tampa Bay suffered its first road loss of the season on June 8, conceding two goals in second-half stoppage time against the Carolina Railhawks. The Rowdies played down a man for more than 50 minutes after a red card issued to defender Andres Arango.

Midfielder Luke Mulholland is tied for the team lead with three assists. Mulhol-land is currently second on the team with four goals in all competitions. The Rowdies success in the U.S. Open Cup has been largely thanks to goalkeeper Diego Restrepo, who has saved a penalty kick in wins against VSI Tampa Bay FC and Seattle Sounders FC.

Restrepo, a 25-year-old goalkeeper, was born in Venezuela, but has represented the United States at the U-17 and U-20 international level.

TIMBERS HOST TWO SUMMER FRIENDLIES

The Timbers play host to Monarcas Morelia of Mexico’s Liga MX in the inaugural “Copa Verde” on Wednesday, July 3, at 8 p.m. (Pacific) at JELD-WEN Field. Monarcas recently concluded the 2013 Clausura tournament in Mexico, qualify-ing for the Liguilla playoffs. Portland hosts English Premier League side Norwich City on Wednesday, July 24, at 8 p.m. (Pacific) at JELD-WEN Field. The Canaries finished the 2012-13 season in 11th place (out of 20) with a 10-14-14 record.

LAST ONE STANDINGThrough 14 games, Portland claims the best winning percentage on the road (2-0-6, .625) and is the only remaining team yet to suffer a road loss while already surpassing the team’s away goal-scoring total from 2011 and 2012. The Timbers have earned at least a point in each of their first eight road contests, including a 2-2 draw at Chicago on June 8. This season, Portland has earned draws on the road at Seattle (March 16), Colorado (March 30), San Jose (April 21), FC Dallas (May 8), Vancouver (May 18) and Chicago (June 8). On April 27, the Timbers overcame two, one-goal deficits in a 3-2 road win at Sporting Kansas City. Portland’s 12 goals on the road ranks first in the league. Portland is also the only remaining MLS team with just one loss this season.

The Timbers are tied for second in the league with 22 goals and rank among the top five in several statistical categories. Portland ranks third in shots on goal (67) and third in assists (23), while coming in fifth in shots (187). Midfielder Will Johnson is tied for fifth in the league with five goals and midfielder Diego Valeri is tied for second with four assists. Midfielder Diego Chara’s two game-winning assists rank second among league leaders.

TOP FIVE FOR PORTERNot including 1996 when everyone was a new coach, first-year head coach Caleb Porter is the fifth coach in MLS history to record an unbeaten streak of 10 or more games in his first season. Bob Bradley (1998, 11 games with Chicago), Frank Yallop (2001, 12 games with San Jose), Preki (2007, 11 games with Chivas USA) and Tom Soehn (2007, 13 games with D.C. United) round out the list. Porter is the first rookie head coach to accomplish the feat since 2007.

SECOND-HALF THREATPortland has scored an MLS-high 18 goals in the second half of games this season, including a league-best seven goals during the first 15 minutes follow-ing the halftime break. On the defensive side, the Timbers have conceded seven goals in the final 45 minutes this season, which ranks third behind Seattle (5) and Sporting Kansas City (6) for the league’s best second-half defense.

A RESILIENT GROUPThrough 14 games, the Timbers are one of two MLS teams to earn a .500 or better record when conceding the first goal of a game, Montreal is the second team. Portland has conceded the first goal in six of 14 matches, but the team has battled back to earn at least a point in five of those six games (1-1-4 record). Playing down a man, and trailing by one, forward Jose Valencia scored the equalizer in the 84th minute for a 2-2 draw against Vancouver on May 18. The Timbers trailed twice against Sporting KC on April 27 before earning a 3-2 win on the road. Portland has surmounted a pair of two-goal deficits this season (3-1 on March 3 vs. New York; 2-0 on March 30 at Colorado) to earn draws. No other team in the league has accomplished that feat so far this season.

REVISITING SOCCER BOWL «75The Tampa Bay Rowdies and Portland Timbers, both expansion franchises during the 1975 North American Soccer League season, met in the first edition of the league’s rebranded championship game called the Soccer Bowl. Soccer Bowl ’75 was broadcast live on CBS in front of 17,483 fans at Spartan Stadium in San Jose, Calif. After a scoreless first half, Rowdies defender Arsène Auguste fired a strong volley into the back of the net in the 66th minute to give Tampa Bay a 1-0 lead.

Rowdies forward Clyde Best, who would eventually sign with the Timbers in 1977, tallied an insurance goal in the 88th minute as Tampa Bay earned a 2-0 win. The trip to Soccer Bowl ’75 was the only trip to the NASL championship game for the Timbers, while Tampa Bay would return in back-to-back title games in 1978 and 1979 - losing both times.
