PORTLAND TIMBERS vs CHICAGO FIRE PROVIDENCE PARK, Portland, Ore.

March 16, 2014 (WEEK 2, MLS Game #15) 12 noon PT (UniMás; ROOT-NW; My 50 Chi) Another interconference matchup is ahead when the Portland Timbers take on the Chicago Fire on Sunday afternoon at Providence Park. It’s a second consecutive home game for the Timbers, who opened their season with a last-gasp 1-1 draw with Philadelphia Union last weekend. The Fire remain on the West Coast for a second consecutive week, starting off their season with a 3-2 loss at Chivas USA. REFEREE: Marcos de Oliveira. This is the only league meeting between the teams this season. The Timbers have never lost to the Fire, with three wins and a draw in four meetings all-time. The Timbers’

three-game winning streak vs. Chicago was ended last year, as the teams reached a 2-2 draw at Toyota Park. The Timbers have won both meetings all-time between the clubs in Portland, the last a 2-1 victory in 2012. Coaches record: Caleb Porter vs. PHI: P1 W0 L0 T1 … Frank Yallop vs. POR: P7 W0 L2 T5

PORTLAND TIMBERS The Portland Timbers came back to grab a point from their 2014 season opener, getting a late equalizer for a 1-1 draw with Philadelphia Union on Saturday evening at Providence Park. The Timbers are in sixth place in the Western Conference with 1 point from 1 game. LAST MATCH

After having a shot cleared off the line in the first half by Timbers defender Norberto Paparatto, Union finally broke through in the 64th minute. From a corner kick, Maurice Edu flicked a header across the goalmouth that Jack McInerney headed home for the opener.

But the home side dramatically equalized four minutes into second-half stoppage time. Will Johnson took a quick corner kick from the right that took a deflection before falling to Gaston Fernandez for a header and the point-saving tally.

Timbers head coach started the season with Gaston Fernandez on the left side of his side’s three-pronged attack, and Norberto Paparatto filling a spot in central defense.

PORTLAND TIMBERS (4-1-2-3): Donovan Ricketts - Jack Jewsbury (Steve Zakuani 85), Pa Modou Kah (Mamadou Danso 34), Norberto Paparatto, Michael Harrington - Diego Valeri - Diego Chara, Will Johnson - Darlington Nagbe, Maximiliano Urruti (Kalif Alhassan 73), Gaston Fernandez.

TEAM NEWS A year ago, the Timbers scored 16 goals from the 76th minute onward, tied for third-most in MLS. Four of those

came in stoppage time, two of which snatched late points (a win and a draw). “We scored one last year against LA Galaxy to win the game at the final whistle. It’s the last kick of the game,”

said Timbers head coach Caleb Porter. “I give our guys a lot of credit for pulling out a point. You can look at it one of two ways: we lost two points or we pulled out a point. We’re going to build on the positive, to pull out a point because, under the circumstances, I think almost everybody thought that the game was over. That’s what this team is capable of.”

Last season, the Timbers conceded 11 goals from set pieces, tied for fourth-most in MLS (two behind the LA Galaxy).

“In every game we’ve played, we’ve been the better team in terms of controlling the game. We haven’t been producing goals as well as we need to, but it’s not because of a lack of chances or a lack of control of the game,” said Porter. “We’ve obviously given up a few set-pieces, but we’ll correct that the best we can. In the end, if we give up a few set-pieces, but we don’t give up many goals total, I’ll take that. If we give up a ton of

goals and none of them are set-pieces, that is not any better. Ultimately, I don’t think we are going to give up many goals this year, that’s more of our focus.”

In his MLS debut, Gaston Fernandez scored the lone Timbers goal and played the full 90 minutes in a wide attacking role.

“I think part of scoring goals is confidence. For him, to get that first one, hopefully that gets him rolling,” said Porter. “We need to get [Diego] Valeri his first one and [Darlington] Nagbe his first one as well. Like I said, once we do, this team is capable of scoring goals, there’s no doubt about it.”

There was an early forced substitution when defender Pa Modou Kah had to come off with a hamstring injury, replaced by Futty Danso.

CHICAGO FIRE The Chicago Fire weren’t able to come back from a second-half hole, falling 3-2 to Chivas USA on Sunday afternoon at StubHub Center to open the new season. The Fire have 0 points from 1 game. LAST MATCH

Chivas USA took the lead early in the second half when Erick Torres was pulled down in the box by Fire defender Gonzalo Segares. Torres stepped up to convert the penalty, giving Chivas the lead in the 56th minute.

Rookie Thomas McNamara then doubled Chivas’ lead in the 59th minute, when he slotted home a cross from the left flank from Leandro Barrera.

But the Fire pulled level midway through the second half through a pair of substitutes. Benji Joya got his first MLS goal in his first minute on the field, when he scored on a rebound from an Alex shot in the 64th minute.

Then another Fire substitute, Quincy Amarikwa, hit a beautiful curling shot past an outstretched Dan Kennedy to tie the game at 2-2 with 20 minutes to play.

But Chivas hit for the game-winner in the 88th minute. Defender Bobby Burling headed past Fire goalkeeper Sean Johnson in traffic off a Mauro Rosales corner kick to give the home side the full complement of points.

Fire head coach Frank Yallop ran out a new-look back four in his first match of charge of the club, featuring Lovel Palmer and Jhon Kennedy Hurtado.

CHICAGO FIRE (4-1-4-1): Sean Johnson - Lovel Palmer, Bakary Soumare, Jhon Kennedy Hurtado, Gonzalo Segares - Jeff Larentowicz - Dilly Duka, Alex, Chris Rolfe (Logan Pause 75), Patrick Nyarko (Benji Joya 63) - Juan Luis Anangono (Quincy Amarikwa 57).

TEAM NEWS The Fire opened their season with a loss for a second consecutive season, and have not won their first match

since 2009. “We were poor. I thought our whole demeanor wasn’t what we’ve seen and worked on in preseason. Just very

disappointing,” said Yallop. “Having said that, coming back and tying the game 2-2, we fought back, kept going, got back to tie the game, and to give up a set play like that is poor on our behalf. We’ve got to learn from it, we got to move on, but very disappointing.”

Newcomer Benji Joya scored 49 seconds into his Fire debut, netting the Fire opener with his first touch of the game. Joya becomes the 10th Fire player to score in his debut appearance for the club.

“He scored a goal, he did well. He’s young; you’re going to get young decisions. He had a couple of fouls where I thought maybe he shouldn’t have dived in, but he did fine,” said Yallop. Said Joya: “All I’ve put in my mind is to get the debut and get a goal and get my name on the score sheet and luckily, the first touch I had today turned into a goal and I’m really proud of that.”

In the final match of the 2013 season, the Fire were hit for five goals by the New York Red Bulls. With newcomers Lovel Palmer and Jhon Kennedy Hurtado in a new-look back four, the Fire conceded three goals.

“Every time you give up three goals, you can’t say you’re figured out too well. Our goal this season was not to concede as many goals, and today we gave up three so you can’t say we did a good job,” said defender Bakary Soumare. “We worked really hard; the coaching staff has done a great job with the backline, working on defense. We know we conceded three goals today and we’re not happy about that.”

The Fire conceded 13 goals after the 76th minute in 2013, one of those coming in stoppage time. “Losing is terrible, it never feels good no matter how you look at it. For us as a group, we have to make sure that we don’t buckle under and we’re ready for the fight until the last minute of the game. If you’re not ready to fight, then we’re in trouble,” said Yallop.

Mike Magee, the MLS Most Valuable Player a season ago, did not play in the season opener. “To be honest, he’s still a bit injured, so I didn’t want to risk him in this game. We said maybe, but I had already

put Logan [Pause] on, Chris Rolfe was cramping, and we had already used all our subs,” said Yallop. “Mike was good for maybe ten minutes but we had to change it a little bit. It is what it is. I think Mike wanted to be part of it today and I did as well, but I didn’t want to risk it and give him 25 minutes when he probably only had 10 in him, and his hamstring is still a little bit tight, so I didn’t want to go there.”

Providence Park opened on April 14, 2011, in front of a sold-out crowd in the Timbers first-ever home match as an MLS team. The club proceeded to sell out 51 consecutive regular season home games in the team’s first three MLS sea-sons, even after raising the 86-year-old downtown venue’s capacity from 18,627 to 20,647 in 2013. Last year, the club earned an 11-1-5 overall regular-season home record in 17 games, which was the best home record in MLS.

Forward Gastón Fernández scored in his MLS debut and goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts made four saves to help the Timbers battle back to earn a 1-1 draw against Philadelphia in the MLS season opener for both clubs on March 8, before a sellout crowd at Providence Park. Trailing 1-0 in second-half stoppage time, the Timbers earned a corner kick after midfielder Steve Zakuani saw a shot deflected inside the penalty box. Midfielder Will Johnson delivered a quickly taken corner kick that glanced off a Union defender before Fernández headed the ball inside the left post to tie the match. Fernández becomes the fifth Timbers player to score a goal in his MLS debut with the club, as Portland extended its regular-season home unbeaten streak to 16 games.

CONSECUTIVE REGULAR-SEASON HOME SELLOUTS:

CATEGORICAL WON-LOST-TIED HEAD COACH CALEB PORTERHead coach Caleb Porter guided the Portland Timbers on a record-setting, turna-round season in 2013, his first season in MLS and as the club’s head coach. He was announced as the Timbers head coach on Aug. 29, 2012, and joined the club ahead of the 2013 MLS campaign. Porter received the Slats Gill Award for Sportsperson of the Year at the Oregon Sports Awards on March 9, 2014, becoming the fourth soccer-related figure to receive the award since it was founded in 1957.

Porter was named the 2013 MLS Coach of the Year after leading Portland to a 14-5-15 (57pts) record, finishing the regular season in first place in the Western Conference and with the third-best record in the league – just two points shy of MLS Supporters’ Shield-winners New York Red Bulls. In 2013, the Timbers set new single-season club marks in points, wins, goals (54), goal differential (+21), shutouts (15) and fewest goals allowed (33).

Under Porter, the Timbers assembled one of the biggest turnaround seasons in MLS history in 2013. In comparison to Portland’s 2012 totals, the Timbers assembled a 23-point improvement in points and an MLS-record 43-goal improvement in goal differential. Portland’s five losses during the 2013 regular season are tied for the fewest in MLS history in a 34-game season. In 2013, the Timbers ranked third in MLS in goals scored and conceded the second-fewest goals at 33, giving the club a league-best, plus-21 goal differential. The club also led the league with 15 shutouts, tied for third-most in a single season in MLS history. During the regular season, the Timbers assembled one of the longest unbeaten streaks in MLS history at 15 games.

The Timbers recorded a 15-game, home unbeaten streak during the 2013 regular season, posting a league-best 11-1-5 home record at Providence Park. The club also set an MLS single-season record with 11 home shutouts. Among Porter’s achievements during the 2013 season, the club’s 57 points accrued are the most earned by a first-year head coach in MLS since the league’s inaugural season in 1996. Porter’s winning percentage (.632) in 2013 ranked among the best in league history for first-year MLS head coaches, and the Timbers’ 15-game unbeaten streak is the longest by an MLS head coach in his first full season at the helm.

Under Porter in 2013, Portland qualified for the MLS Cup Playoffs for the first time since joining the league in 2011. By defeating rival Seattle Sounders FC in the Western Conference Semifinal, the Tim-bers became just the fifth club in MLS history to reach the conference championship in their MLS Cup Playoff debut, and the first since Real Salt Lake in 2008. Additionally, the Timbers made their deepest run in club history in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup in 2013 under Porter’s guidance, reaching the semi-finals of the tournament.

Prior to joining the Timbers, Porter was one of the most successful coaches in NCAA history during his tenure as head coach at the University of Akron from 2006-12. He compiled a career mark of 123-18-17 at Akron and owned the highest winning percentage (.832) among all active Division I coaches. Porter garnered numerous honors while at Akron, including 2009 NSCAA National Coach of the Year.

From Kalamazoo, Mich., Porter led the Zips to back-to-back NCAA College Cup appearances in 2009 and 2010, and the school’s first national title in any sport in 2010. In all, he guided Akron to seven Mid-American Conference (MAC) regular-season championships, five MAC tournament titles and five consecutive trips to the NCAA tournament’s Round of 16 (2008-12). Porter set multiple NCAA records while at Akron, including a 48-match, home unbeaten streak (44-0-4) from 2008-11 and a 47-match unbeaten streak (44-0-3) in conference play from 2006-12.

Porter’s coaching career also includes time as the head coach of the U.S. U-23 Men’s National Team during 2012 CONCACAF Olympic qualifying and he spent three years as an assistant coach on the U.S. U-18 National Team from 2009-11. Prior to joining Akron, Porter was an assistant coach for six years (2000-05) at Indiana University.

As a player, Porter was the 27th overall pick by the San Jose Clash in the 1998 MLS College Draft. He spent time with San Jose and the Tampa Bay Mutiny before a knee injury ended his professional playing career in 2000. Porter also played for the U.S. National B Team from 1996-97, winning a bronze medal at the 1997 World University Games.

He had a successful collegiate playing career at Indiana, where he was a three-year captain and a three-time All-Big Ten honoree. Porter led the Hoosiers to four conference titles, and four NCAA tourna-ment appearances. As a senior, Porter captained IU to 23 consecutive wins before losing to eventual national champion UCLA in the national semifinals and was the runner-up for the 1997 Hermann Trophy.

ALL-TIME SERIES NOTES

The Timbers and Fire have squared off four times in their all-time MLS series, twice at Providence Park and twice at Toyota Park in Bridgeview, Ill. The clubs first met in the inaugural home-opening match at Providence Park on April 14, 2011, as Portland earned a thrilling 4-2 win against the Fire on a rainy night. Earning the club’s first-ever win as an MLS side, forward Jorge Perlaza netted two goals, Rodney Wallace scored his first Timbers MLS goal and Portland forced a late own goal by the Fire in an entertaining match.

Portland earned their first road win as an MLS club later in the 2011 season against Chicago at Toyota Park. Jack Jewsbury recorded the game-winning goal on a penalty kick in the 25th minute.

The Fire last visited Portland in 2012, as the Timbers tallied a 2-1 win over their Windy City rivals. Defender Eric Brunner scored a goal and Portland earned the game-winning goal via a Chicago Fire own goal in the 52nd minute.

Last season, forward Frederic Piquionne tallied two assists and midfielders Diego Valeri and Ben Zemanski recorded two goals in a 2-2 draw at Toyota Park.

UNBEATEN STREAK AT HOME

Portland is unbeaten in its last 16 regular-season home matches at Providence Park, putting together an 11-0-5 record since April 6, 2013. The Timbers last suffered a loss at home on March 9, 2013, in a 2-1 setback against the Montreal Impact in the second game of the 2013 regular season.

Defender Jack Jewsbury’s next goal will be the 25th of his MLS career. Jews-bury has recorded 10 of his 24 career goals in a Timbers uniform. Additionally, Jewsbury is 40 minutes shy of tying Jeff Agoos (21,195 minutes) for 42nd place in all-time career minutes played in MLS.

JOHNSON SIGNED TO MULTI-YEAR CONTRACT

The Timbers announced on Monday that the club has signed midfielder Will Johnson to a new, multi-year contract. Per MLS and club policy, terms of the agreement were not disclosed. Johnson, 27, was named to the league’s Best XI after helping guide the Timbers to a first-place finish in the Western Confer-ence regular-season standings and their first-ever appearance in the MLS Cup Playoffs in 2013. Voted a 2013 AT&T MLS All-Star, Johnson also helped lead the Timbers to their deepest run in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. The team’s captain set new career marks in goals (9), assists (5), points (23) and minutes played (2,520) during his first season with Portland last season. AGAINST THE EAST AT HOME

The Timbers have only lost one match at home against an Eastern Conference club in the last two seasons. Since 2012, Portland has logged a 5-1-5 overall home record against Eastern Conference teams, outscoring teams 18-9 in the process. The Timbers are unbeaten in their last four home games against Eastern Conference teams (2-0-2).

ATTACKING THE GOALAccording to Opta, the Timbers ranked first in the league after Week 1 of the season in passes attempted in the final third of the field (157). Portland also ranked among league leaders in crosses with 28. The Timbers saw eight of their shots against Philadelphia blocked, the most in the league last week.

Nagbe is the club’s MLS career leader in goals (17) and appearances (96).

Chicago enters Sunday’s match on the heels of a season-opening loss to Chivas USA at the StubHub Center in Carson, Calif. Even at 2-2 entering the final 10 minutes of the match, the Fire conceded the game-winning goal off a corner kick in the 88th minute as Chivas USA claimed a 3-2 win. Recently acquired midfielder Benji Joya (on loan from Mexican club Santos Laguna) tallied his first career MLS goal in his debut against Chivas USA. Last season, the Fire came back from two goals down to earn a 2-2 draw at Toyota Park on June 8, 2013. The Fire are 0-2-0 in matches played in Portland. The Fire fell 4-2 on April 14, 2011 and 2-1 on May 20, 2012. The Fire are 0-3-1 all-time in regular season matches against the Portland Timbers The Timbers enter the match after a 1-1 draw in their season opener against the Philadelphia Union on Saturday, March 8. Gaston Fernandez’s 93rd minute equalizer gave the Timbers a share of the points. QUICK KICKS vs. Portland Timbers Fire defender Lovel Palmer will face his former club on Sunday. Traded to the Timbers on July 21, 2011, Palmer made 34 appearances and tallied one assist over the course of two seasons before joining Real Salt Lake in 2013. Palmer was one of three players to make their Fire debut on Sunday, March 9. Joining Palmer were Jhon Kennedy Hurtado and Benji Joya. Joya, who entered the match in the 63rd minute, scored the first Fire goal of the 2014 season with his first touch of the match. Joya’s goal, scored 49 seconds after he entered, marks the 7th fastest goal as a substitute since the start of the 2007 MLS season. Joya is the 10th Fire player to score in his debut appearance for the club.

A LOOK AT THE FIRE The Chicago Fire (0-1-0, 0 points) enter their 17th season of MLS play after a busy offseason. With two-time MLS Cup champion and two-time MLS Coach of the Year Frank Yallop at the helm, Yallop built his coaching staff to include tremendous experience, naming Ring of Fire member C.J. Brown returned to the club as assistant coach and 2002 FIFA World Cup veteran Clint Mathis as assistant coaches, and 1988 Olympic and 1990 World Cup defender Brian Bliss as Technical Director. The Men in Red return a strong core of veteran leaders, including 2013 MLS MVP Mike Magee, Jeff Larentowicz, Patrick Nyarko and Gonzalo Segares. Offseason acquisitions Jhon Kennedy Huratado, Patrick Ianni and Lovel Palmer were added to shore up the back line, while the Fire also added talented young players including U.S. Youth International Benji Joya, and signed Homegrown players Harry Shipp and Chris Ritter.
