A TEAM ON THE RISE
Mandy Fortner - Head Coach
Mandy (Gomez) Fortner is a classic example of “growing where you are planted.”
The native of Mesquite, Texas (14 miles east of Dallas), grew up, studied, trained and played in the area. After investing
three seasons at SAGU as an Assistant Coach while completing her Master’s degree, she was awarded the reigns to the team
when she was named the Head Coach in 2011.In two seasons the team has won 10 games, five of them in conference play. In the program’s first
five years of existence the Lady Lions won only nine games, just once in 37 league contests.
A year ago was SAGU’s best, going 6-11-1 (4-5-1 in the RRAC). They scored 28 and allowed just
32. The year before she took over the team scored just seven goals and surrendered 55.
The likely turning point in the young program’s history was during the 2011 NCCAA Central Re-
gional. Up against Central Baptist College (Ark), who had defeated SAGU earlier in the season, the Lady
Lions played them to an overtime scoreless tie. SAGU then won in a thrilling shootout, 5-4.
The Pride fell the next day to Mid-America Christian (12-7-1), but had proven their mettle with the
regional win. Coupled with a 1-0 win in the regular season finale, SAGU had back-to-back shutouts.
Last fall the team closed the season with a 5-3-1 finish, including a stunning 1-0 triumph over Our
Lady of the Lake University. The Halos were 5-0 in the RRAC at the time. This fall, however, SAGU com-
petes in the tougher Sooner Athletic Conference. Coach Fortner welcomes the challenge.
“I have five rules for the team,” she explains. “Glorify God in everything, Give Respect to others, Train Hard, Never Quit and Have
Fun. I try to lead by example in each of those areas, so I expect nothing less from my players.”
“I try to create an environment for learning, both for our players and our coaches.”
Following a standout prep career at R.H. Poteet HS in Mesquite, Mandy burst on the scene
at Navarro College in Corsicana. She scored 31 goals and racked up 20 assists in 2004, both
Bulldog records. Ranking #4 in the nation in scoring, she earned All-American status in 2004 and
2005.
For an encore, she led Dallas Baptist University (NCAA Division II) in goals in her junior and
senior campaigns, with nine in 2006 and six in 2007. Fortner earned All-Heartland Conference in
2007 with the Patriots.
She received a Bachelor of Science in both Biology and Kinesiology at DBU. Mandy, who
turns 28 at the end of this season, added a Master’s of Education degree in Health and Kinesiol-
ogy at the University of Texas at Tyler.
COACHES STRATEGY SESSION

during a game in 2009.
She is married to Derek Fortner, a SAGU graduate. He played baseball for the Lions
and still owns several team records. The likeable Derek is also an Assistant Coach in base-
ball. They reside in nearby Palmer.

Kaylyn (Settle) Flores - Assistant Coach
Continued
Kaylyn (Settle) Flores (24) is entering her second season as an Assistant Coach at SAGU.
She is graduate of Lubbock Christian University, where she finished her studies with a Bachelor’s
degree in Humanities.
She also attended the University of Texas of the Permian Basin (UTPB), Eastfield College
and Richland College, where she earned an Associate’s degree in Science. Settle played soccer
at UTPB, Richland and for two years at LCU.Her college experience was punctuated with awards, including 2009 when her team won the na-
tional junior college championship. It was the Thunderducks’ third title in six years.
In the championship game, played in Herkimer, NY, Richland edged Montgomery College (Rockville, Md), 2-1.
Settle had one of the two goals and was chosen on the National All-Tournament Team.
While a member of LCU Lady Chaps, the team qualified for the Sooner Athletic Conference tournament both
years. She was selected to the All-SAC Second Team as a senior, while also garnering All-District honors for
academics. She was also chosen as an NAIA Daktronics Scholar Athlete.
A graduate of North Mesquite High School, she played varsity for four years. A highlight was 2005 when
the Stallions were the Class 5A State Runner-Up. Settle earned All-District honors four times.
She and her husband, David Flores, a former 4-year starter in soccer at SAGU, dwell in Waxahachie. He is
teaching in the Mansfield Independent School District at Kenneth Davis Elementary.
