Collegeathletesareknownfor theirstrong,sibling-likebondtheysharewitheachother,butforNortheastfreshmenbasketballplayersKebrinaandMarcellLucas,ittrulyisafamilyaffair.

Itallstartedwhenthepairwaskidsjustplayingaroundintheyard,andnowtheysharethesamecollegecourt.

“It’salotoffunplayingwithhimbecausewegrewupplayingtogether inourgrandparent’sbackyard,”Kebrina said. “Beforethegameshe’salwayshypingmeup.Itreallymeansalottohearmybrothercheeringformeupinthestandswhichmotivatesmetoplayevenbetter.”

Another advantage Kebrinaexplainsisthefactthattheycanhelpeachotherimproveontheirgame.

“Whenwegetdonepractic-ingweworkwitheachotherandtry to make ourselves better,”Kebrinasaid.“Wejustfeedoffofeachother.”

MarcellLucasisnotashamedof takingpointers fromhis sis-ter.

“She’s always helping meimprove on my shooting anddribbling,”Marcellsaid.

Although they use eachother’s talent to improve them-selves, there was a time whenlosingledtoembarrassment.

“Wewouldalwaysgooutinthe back yard and play basket-ballandweplayedagainsteach

otheronedayandIbeathim,”Kebrinafondlyrecalled.“IwassoexcitedbecauseIdidstuffhecouldnotdosoIreallyembarrassedhimwhichmadehimcry.”

Marcell,whilelaughing,doesnotdenythatembarrassingmem-oryandevensaysthatitwasnotuncommonforKebrinatobeathiminone-on-one.

Kebrina,withherstrongpersonalityanddominatingbasketballskills,saidthatshewasnotalwaysthisconfident.

“Backinmiddleschool,Iwasveryscaredandnervoustoplay

atfirst,”Kebrinasaid,“butafterIstartedworkingatmygameandplayingAAU,itjustgotbetterfromthere.”

BecauseMarcell graduated from Baldwyn High School andKebrinagraduatedfromNewAlbanyHighSchooltheydidnotgettoseeeachotherplaymuch.

“I really never got to see my sister play basketball in highschool,”Marcellsaid.“Nowthatwegotothesamecollege,Ire-allyenjoywatchingherplay.”

Althoughtheydonothavetoworryabouthelpingeachotherstudy,Kebrinajokinglyclaimsthatsheisthe‘smarterone’.

However,bothathletes said that theyusebasketballasdisci-plinetostudymore.

Kebrina and Marcell bothcredittheirloveofbasketballtotheirfamilymembersthathaveinspired and motivated themalongtheway.

Kebrina’s motivation comesfromthewomenclosesttoher.

“Mymotherandgrandmoth-ercometoallthegamesandaresuchaninspirationtome,”Ke-brinasaid.

Marcell is encouraged withthe knowledge of his family’spast accomplishment and suc-cess.

“Hearingaboutmy relativesplaying ball and achieving alot has inspired me to achievesomethinginmylifetime,too,”Marcellsaid.

TheLucas-duosaytheybothtriedmanydifferentsportsgrow-ingup,butnothingcomesclosetotheirloveofbasketball.

Aftertheirtimehere,theybothplanonmovinguptothenextlevelofbasketballandcontinuingtheirpursuittowardsadegreeinathletictraining.

However,it’sthejourneyfrombackyardbasketballtocollegecrowdsandhardwoodcourtsthathasonlystrengthenedthebondbetweenKebrinaandMarcellLucas,andwillcarryonnomatterwhatgoalstheypursueorshooton.
