Sometimes,allittakesisknowingtherightpeople.ForLadyTigersophomoreforwardTalisaBoydandTigersophomorefor-

wardTylerBrunson,eachoneofthosescenariosledtothemcomingtoNorth-east.

Boydreceivedane-mailfromLadyTigerheadcoachBrianAlexanderwhileshewason amission trip in JapanwhileBrunson’s formerAmateurAthleticUnion(AAU)coachisafriendofTigerassistantcoachNickColn.

ForBoyd,it’sbeenanadventurethroughouttheAmericansouthwestastheNortheastsophomoretraveledfromCaliforniatoLouisianatoTexasandfinallytoMississippi.

Brunson’stravelshavebeenmoreofanEastCoastaffairastheTigersopho-morefoundhimselfatTuckerHighSchoolinGeorgiabeforemovingtoMountZionChristianAcademyinDurham,N.C.andthenbacktoTuckerforhissenior

year.Fateplayedaroleineachoftheirrecruit-

mentsandBoydandBrunsoneachendedupinTexasfortheirfirstyearofcollege.BoydchosetogotoPanolaCollegewhileBrunsonfollowedhisbrothertoTylerJuniorCollege.

However,foronereasonoranother,bothendeduplookingforanewschool.

ForBoyd,thetripthroughtheAmeri-cansouthwesthasbeenadecentone.Fromopeningupherplaying career inCaliforniathrough her sophomore year to winning achampionship with Natchitoches CentralHigh School in Natchitoches, Louisiana,Boydhasfoundaloveforthegame.

Nonetheless,thatlovewasalmostlostaf-terherfirstyearincollege.

“Iplayedforayearandtookayearoff,”Boydsaid.“Weweren’tverygood.Wekeptlosing,andlosingandlosing.WemaybewontwoorthreegamesthewholeseasonandIfeltlikeIwasnotdevelopingasaplayeranddecidedIdidn’twanttogothere.”

Thankgoodnessfore-mails.“Isentoutacoupleofe-mailstosomecoachesinMississippi,”Boydsaid.

“(CoachAlexander)wasthefirstonetoreplysothat’showIgothere.HecontactedmewhilehewasinJapan,”Boydsaid.“Hewaslookingfor

afour-playerthatcouldpass,scoreandreboundlikeIcould.Hesaidwhenheopenedupthee-mailitwaseverythinghewaslookingfor.”

Boyd’smove wasn’t without hesitation.As the oldest of four siblings, itmeantthatshewouldhavetogiveupherjobatanorthopedicclinicinNatchi-tochesandmovealmosteighthoursfromhome.

Thatmovefromhomealsomeantthathersiblings–a16-year-oldbrother,a12-year-oldbrotheranda4-year-oldsisterwouldprobablynotgettoseeherplayincollege.

“Thattripisprobablynevergoingtohappen–withamomthatworksandthreekids.”Boydsaid.“It’sa7-hour,35-minutedrivehome.”

Eventhoughit’salmostaneight-hourdrivehome,Boydknowsthatshemadetherightchoice.Boyd’smothermadesureofthatwhileshewasgrowingup.

“Schoolalwayscomesfirst,”saidBoyd.“Therearenosportswithoutschool.Iwasprettymuchan‘A’student.Igraduatedhighschoolwitha3.0.Nomatter

howtalentedyouare,youcan’tdoanythingwithoutaneducation.ThatwasjustthewayIwasraised.”

WhileBoydgrewupplayingbasketball,Brunsonfoundhishardwoodcallinginhighschool.

Afteragrowthspurtbetweenhissophomoreandfreshmanyears,Brunsondecidedtoputhisheighttohisadvantagebyplayingbasketball.

Up until his ninth grade year, Brunsonwas a football player andwantedtotrysomethingnew.Thatthemeof“tryingsomethingnew”followsBrunsonthroughouthislifetodaywithvariousadventuresinhighschoolandcollege.

“Iplayedfootballandtriedoutforbasketballandmadeit,”Brunsonsaid.“Ididn’twanttoplayfootballanymorebecauseIstartedtogrowsoIjuststuckwithbasketball.”

However, football andbasketballweren’t theonly two sports theGeorgianativetriedoutinhighschool.

“Ijustwantedtotrysomethingnew,”Brunsonsaid.“Iplayedsoccermyse-nioryearinhighschoolandwasprettygoodatit.Iactuallyonlygotscoredontwice.”

Nonetheless, Brunson knew his callingwhenhe fell in lovewith the gameof bas-ketballhissenioryearbuta lackof interestfromareacolleges sent theGeorgiabasket-ballplayertoTexasforhisfirstseason.

“I didn’t have any schools come afterme so I signedwithTyler Junior College,”Brunsonsaid,“butthenIwantedtotrysome-thingnewandcametoNortheast.”

OneofBrunson’sthingsthattheNorth-eastsophomorehaslockedinonandhasnottried to change is his mind about what hewants to do in life.The6-6power forwardwants tobecomea lawyer, thankstoa littlefriendlyadvicefromhismother.

“WhenIwasyounger,mymomalwayssaidItalkedbackandthatIshouldbecomealawyer,”Brunsonsaid.“Ithoughtaboutitandwantedtotryitout.Ilikecrimeshowsandallofthat.”

Brunson’smotherhasbeenadrivingforceinhislifeandinthelivesofhistwoolderbrothers.Whetheritisgrantingthemheight(Brunson’smothertowersat5-11)orallowingthesiblingstodotheirownthings,it’sbeenafamilyaffairforBrunson.

Brunson’soldestbrotherisattheNorthCarolinaCentralUniversitypursuingalawdegreeattheageof23whilehisotherbrother(20)washisteammateatTylerJuniorCollegeinTexas.

WithBrunsonwanting tobea lawyer, theNortheastsophomorefoundhiscaseonthebasketballcourtduringtheTigersfinalgameof2012andconvincedajuryofhispeersthattheTigerswillbeateamtocontendintheMississippiAssociationofCommunity/JuniorColleges(MACJC)during the latterpartoftheyear.

“Weweredown18witheightminutestogo,”BrunsonsaidabouttheGads-denStategameonDecember13.“Wecametogetherasateamandcamebacktowin.”

Whetherit’sonthecourtorstudyingtobeinone,Brunsonknowsthataneducationisthekeytoeach.

“Youjusthavetostayfocused,”Brunsonsaid.“It’sallabouttimemanage-ment.”
