1,000-yard backfields In SIU history, Saluki running backs have rushed for 1,000 yards in a season 20 times. The feat has never been done by two players in the same season. Heading into Saturday’s game, D.J. Davis (956 yards) and Javon Williams Jr. (921 yard) are closing in on the coveted 1,000-yard mark. Davis rushed for 1,118 yards last season and could become the first Saluki since Arkee Whitlock (2005, 2006) to have back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons. Other Saluki players with multiple 1,000-yard seasons are Tom Koutsos (1999, 2000, 2001) and Muhammad Abdulqaadir (2002, 2003).

QB Karé Lyles posts impressive stats during win streak After losing his first three starts, junior college transfer Karé Lyles (6-1, 225, Jr.) has won five-straight. During the winning streak, he has completed 59-of-91 (.648) passes for 812 yards, 9 TDs and 3 interceptions. Lyles replaced injured starter QB Stone Labanowitz (5-10, 187, So.) during the first series of the UT Martin game on Sept. 14 (SIU went on to win). Labanowitz, who hurt his right shoulder but his healthy again, won a three-way competition during training camp, in which redshirt freshman Nic Baker (5-8, 191, rFr.) was the leader at the start of camp.

Dawg Bitesç Eight different players have caught at least one TD pass for the Salukis this year. Last year, only five different players caught touchdowns.ç SIU leads the league and ranks 5th in the nation in kickoff return coverage yardage (15.39).ç K Nico Gualdoni (6-0, 228, Jr.), who handles kickoffs, replaced injured Griffin Cerra as place kicker three games ago. In two seasons, Gualdoni is a combined 14-of-17 on field goals with a long of 45 yards, and 45-of-46 on PATs. çTrue freshmen who have played key roles this season include RB Romeir Elliott (5-5, 188, Fr.), WR Tanner Corum (5-11, 185, Fr.), CB PJ Jules (6-2, 233, Fr.) and CB Zay Frazier (6-3, 177, Fr.). Elliott has rushed for 476 yards and a 5.9 yard average. Jules leads the team in special teams tackles with 8. True freshmen can play up to four games and still apply for a redshirt.

Qua Brown 4th in the nation in solo tackles Although Jeremy Chinn grabs the headlines as one of the nation’s top safeties and NFL prospects, S Qua Brown (5-11, 203, Jr.) is fourth in the nation in solo tackles per game (6.3). He had 16 tackles at SEMO and 14 at UMass. He also has eight pass breakups to his credit.

The Leg from Down Under A native of Melbourne, Australia, P Jack Colquhoun (6-2, 190, Jr.) is the first Australian to play for the Salukis since Wayne Cowley punted in 1973. Colquhoun has 11 kicks of 50+ yards this season, including an 80-yard boot at South Dakota State that was the third-longest in school history. Three of his 50+ yarders came against Youngstown State, as he was named the MVFC Special Teams Player of the Week. Colquhoun had never seen an American football game in person prior to his college debut at SEMO on Aug. 29. Colquhoun (pronounced KUH-hoon) was a decorated rugby player back home.

TE Nigel Kilby on Senior Bowl Watch List One of SIU’s most potent targets in the passing game is TE Nigel Kilby (6-8, 243, Sr.). He has eight TD catches in 17 games as a Saluki. Against South Dakota last year, he caught seven passes for 109 yards and two touchdowns. NFL scouts have shown increased interest in Kilby this fall, and he is one of three FCS tight ends on the preseason Senior Bowl watch list.

Saluki O-Line trio has combined to start 97 games The Salukis return three starters on the offensive line — C Jacob Marnin (6-2, 316, Sr.), LG ZeVeyon Furcron (6-1, 320, Jr.) and LT Ernest Dye Jr. (6-2, 307, Sr.). The trio has 97 games combined of starting experience.

Road Warriors The Salukis have played seven of their 11 games on the road, including four of their first five games on the road this season. Since 1970, the only other times that’s happened in school history came in 1993 and 1999. The 1974 team played its first five games on the road.

True Scholar-Athletes Four Salukis have already earned their undergraduate degrees — P Jack Colquhoun (finance), OLB Cody Crider (management), LT Ernest Dye Jr. (communications studies) and C Jacob Marnin (criminology & criminal justice). Marnin recorded a 4.0 GPA as an undergrad and was an Academic All-American in 2018.

Jason Petrino takes over defense that returns 10 starters The Salukis return 10 of 11 starters on defense in 2019, including their entire defensive line and secondary. Jason Petrino was hired to become the team’s defensive coordinator after SIU ranked No. 114 in the FCS in Scoring Defense in 2018. Jerry Kill departs for Virginia Tech Jerry Kill was SIU’s director of athletics for 16 months before leaving on Sept. 16 to become an assistant to the head coach at Virginia Tech. Kill was the head football coach at SIU from 2001 to 2007, leading the Salukis to five-straight appearances in the Football Championship Subdivision and winning three straight Gateway Football Conference Championships. While at SIU he also received the prestigious Eddie Robinson National Coach of the Year Award in 2004 and the Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year Award in 2007. He left SIU to serve as head coach at Northern Illinois from 2008 to 2010, delivering three bowl-eligible teams. Kill went on to become head coach at Minnesota from 2011 to 2015. While there, he was named 2014 Big Ten Coach of the Year, sent three teams to bowl games and produced six NFL draft picks. He served as associate athletic director at Kansas State University in 2016 and offensive coordinator at Rutgers University in 2017, retiring from coaching in December due to health issues. Kill inherited a program at SIU that had two winning seasons in its previous 15 years. His 2007 team, quarterbacked by Nick Hill, advanced to the semifinals in the playoffs, where SIU lost to Joe Flacco and Delaware. Hill played for Kill from 2005-07.

Why the Saluki? Southern Illinois had been known as the Maroons since intercollegiate athletics began in 1913. The name “Salukis” became official on March 19, 1951, when the student body overwhelmingly approved the dog as the new symbol of SIU athletics, easily besting “Rebels,” “Knights,” “Flyers,” “Marauders,” and “Maroons.” The oldest purebred dogs in the world with records dating back to 3600 B.C., the Saluki is an ancient Egyptian hunting dog known for its speed and hunting prowess. So why is the name Salukis relevant to Southern Illinois? Natives of southern Illinois know that the region is frequently referred to as “Egypt.” Historian Baker Brownell, in his book “The Other Illinois,” explained how the region came to be known as Egypt. He wrote, “There was a drought in the northern counties (of Illinois) in the early 1800s...the wheat fields dried up, the streams died in their beds. But in Southern Illinois, rain fell and there were good crops, and from the north came people seeking corn and wheat as to Egypt of old. Thus, the name, Egypt.” The 19th century drought in Illinois parallels the Biblical account of the country of Egypt. “There was famine in all lands; but in all the land of Egypt there was bread. All the earth came to Egypt to Joseph to buy grain, because the famine was so severe. And (Jacob) said, ‘Behold, I have heard that there is grain in Egypt; go down and buy grain for us there, that we may live, and not die.’ So 10 of Joseph’s brothers went down to buy grain in Egypt.” (Genesis 41:54b, 57, 42:2-3). In Egypt at that time, Salukis were accepted as the finest animal a family could possess. Adopting such a well-respected dog as its mascot fit perfectly for a school in a region known as “Little Egypt.”

Heading into his fourth season at the helm of Saluki Football, 34-year-old Nick Hill has brought the perfect balance of energy, passion and creativity needed to re-energize the program.

A native son of southern Illinois, Hill’s journey to the top job at SIU started 16 years ago and just 20 miles north of campus, where he was a football and basketball icon at Du Quoin High School. During his senior year of high school in 2002-03, Hill was the area’s Player of the Year in both sports and guided the Indians to the Illinois High School Association 3A state championship football game. The legend continued on the hardwood where Hill averaged 23 points as a senior at Du Quoin and chose Western Kentucky from a host of Division I offers. A broken hand prematurely ended his freshman season at Western but ultimately led him home. In the spring of 2004, Hill transferred to SIU to switch sports and play football under head coach Jerry Kill, just as the program was beginning its rapid rise to the top of the league standings. “I took a leap of faith with Coach Kill,” Hill recalled. “Everyone needs someone who believes in him and for me, that someone was Coach Kill.” Hill initially sat behind league Player of the Year Joel Sambursky, before taking over the starting job in 2006. In two seasons as the starter, he went 21-6 and set the school record for passing yards in 2007. He still holds the best completion percentage (68.3) in school history. Highlights of Hill’s playing career include guiding Southern to a win at Indiana in 2006, in which he passed for four touchdowns as SIU became the league’s first team to defeat a Big Ten opponent. Hill capped off his career in 2007 by leading the team to the Final Four of the playoffs, where the Salukis ultimately lost a 20-17 heartbreaker to Joe Flacco and Delaware. He was also a finalist for the Peyton Award in ‘07. Hill played six seasons of professional football, mostly in the Arena Football League, where he played for head coach Jay Gruden, now the head coach of the NFL’s Washington Redskins. Hill also had brief free-agent stints with the Chicago Bears in 2008 and Green Bay Packers in 2012.

Nick Hill was selected to attend the American Football Coaches

Association’s 35 Under 35 Coaches Leadership Institute in 2019.

Playing for Gruden, one of the game’s top offensive minds, helped shape Hill’s offensive philosophy. First as Southern’s offensive coordinator and now as head coach, Hill has refined his own unique style of offense that combines

elements of Air Raid, spread and up-tempo. In his first season at SIU, Saluki quarterbacks broke a school record for single-season touchdown passes with 29. The following year in 2015, Southern’s offense averaged 498 yards per game -- the second most in conference history. Quarterback Mark Iannotti led the nation in total offense per game. In 2016, the Salukis set program records for passing completions, attempts and yards while only throwing seven interceptions. Southern Illinois ranked in the top-10 nationally for passing offense, total offense and scoring offense for nearly the entire year. The offense was on its way to surpassing those marks in 2017 before starting quarterback Sam Straub was injured early in the eighth game and missed the remainder of the season. In 2018, the offense ranked third in the MVFC in total offense, first downs and time of possession, and ranked in the top half of the league in several more offensive categories. Hill has assembled a talented mix of veteran assistant coaches and young, up-and-comers. First-year defensive coordinator Jason Petrino has head coaching experience, plus spent four years in the MVFC as defensive coordinator at South Dakota. Veteran tight ends coach Pat Poore is one of several former Kill assistants on the staff, and was instrumental in Southern’s initial rebuild under Kill. “I know what the blueprint looks like for our program to be successful, going back to my playing days for Coach Kill, and I know we can get there,” Hill said. “Coaching my alma mater is a dream come true. I love everything about this region and what it stands for, that blue-collar mentality. This is not my team. This is our team. Our program is going to invest in the community and make us proud on and off the field.” Hill and wife, Alicia, a former volleyball player at SIU, reside in Carbondale and have two daughters, Skylar and Charley. His brother, former Saluki quarterback A.J. Hill, is the head coach at Du Quoin High School.
