Principally Speaking: “Thoughts on 2017-2018 School Year”
Spring is a busy time at Galway Elementary as we focus on teaching and learning, while at the same time begin making plans for the upcoming school year. I would llike to share the proposed staffing for our school. We received our preliminary staffing allocation for the coming school year
and the good news is we’ve retained much of this current school year’s
staffing because the school enrollment is projected to remain the same. Our
allocation of 1.7 in hours for Art, PE, and General Music continued and our
staffing for paraeducators and other building support staff remained the
same. We did experience a reduction of two classroom teachers.
The number of sections at each grade level we anticipate is as follows: 6 sec-tions of Kindergarten, 7 sections of first grade, 7 sections of second grade, 5 sections of third grade, 5 sections of fourth grade, and 5 sections of fifth grade. Some teachers will be assigned to teach different grade levels and if our en-rollment increases from what is projected, teaching positions may be re-stored. When staffing decisions are final, I will share them with you. Finally, the two relocatable classrooms will remain for students use. We will continue to put academic excellence first as we help discover the unique qualities in your child. The school year will begin September 5, 2017 and the last student day will be June 12, 2018.

Kindergarten Registration And Orientation – April 26-28, 2017
Kindergarten Orientation at Galway is just around the corner. If you have a child or know of neighbors and friends who have children that are eligible to enter kindergarten next fall at Galway Elementary, please contact the school to re-quest a registration packet and to schedule a Kindergarten Orientation appointment. Eligible students are children who will be five years old on or before September 1, 2017. Children who will be five years of age between September 2 and October 15, 2017 are considered Early Entrance Candidates. Parents of Early Entrance candidates must submit Montgomery County Public Schools Form 271-6: Application for Early Entrance – Kindergarten Program
There will be no school for kindergarten students during Kindergarten Orientation.
Prekindergarten/Head Start Registration Begins March 10 Registration will begin on March 10, 2017, for 2017–2018 prekindergarten and Head Start programs. The programs serve income-eligible families with children who will be 4 years old by September 1, 2017, including children with disa-bilities. Walk-in applications will be accepted Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., at Rocking Horse Road Center, 4910 Macon Road in Rockville. Additional information about eligibility, registration, and required documents to complete an application is available on the MCPS website.
CAREER DAY-Our 3rd annual Career Day will be on Friday April 5th. The purpose of Career Day is to allow students
the opportunity to learn about different career options and to learn about different skills that are required for those
careers. We are currently searching for a variety of presenters. If you would like to share your exciting career with our
students, please contact Nichola Wallen at 301-595-2930.
SCIENCE FAIR -April 20, 2017. Calling all Scientist! The Science Fair is open to all students K-5.

Spotlight on Academics Reading: This month we will be reading poetry and fiction texts. Students will be locating sensory words as well as words or phrases within text that suggest feelings. Writing: This month we will write realistic fiction stories in which we will invent our own characters, name them, and put them into imagined scenarios. We will bring our characters to life by describing what they do, say, and think. Math: This month We are continuing addition and subtraction. First graders are adding and subtracting 2 digit numbers with multiples of 10. For example: 20+13= 33 or 50-20= 30. We will also be adding 2 digit numbers to 1 digit numbers, 12+9= 21. Students will use written method to solve these problems. Here’s an example of a possible written method:

“I know that 24 can be written as 2 tens and 4 ones. I added 8 ones and I got a total of 12 ones. I composed a ten, which left 2 ones in the ones place and gave me a new total of 3 tens in the tens place. My answer is 32.”
Social Studies: This month we will be learning all about natural and human resources used to produce goods. Some examples of natural resources are: water, fruit, animals and oil. Some examples of human resources are: Doctors, Dentist and cashiers. Science: This month we will be focusing on health education. Students will learn about illness prevention practices, germs and how we can keep our body healthy. We will also begin to explore waste and recognize ways people waste resources and harm the environment.

Spotlight on Academics
Reading: Students will read literary text to determine the central message or moral of a story and explain their response using details from the text. Students will describe how an author's choice of words use rhythm and meaning such as patterns, repetition, and evoking a response from a reader.
Writing: Student will create written, audio, and visual poems describing actions, thoughts and feelings. Students will use rhythm, meaning, and adjectives to describe a topic. Students will introduce a topic and use facts to develop supporting points.
Math: Students will add and subtract two 3-digit numbers within 1000 using concrete models, drawings, place value strategies, and written methods. Students will compose and decompose numbers within 1000 including numbers with zero in the tens place.
Science: Students will use what they know about habitats in order to create an indoor habitat that will meet the needs of a brine shrimp and painted lady butterflies. Students will identify, sequence and describe the observable stages in the life cycle of brine shrimp and painted lady butterflies. Students will compare life cycles and habitats of different plants and animals. Students will describe changes in the moon phases over time.
Social Studies: Students will be able describe how leaders and community members contribute to society. Students will be able to identify democratic beliefs and attitudes in our community. Students will be able to research and gather information about historical figures including American leaders, innovators, and heroes.

SPOTLIGHT ON ACADEMICS Our Thinking and Academic Success Skills (TASS) for Marking Period 4 (MP4) are Elaboration and Effort/Motivation/Persistence. READING: Students will begin reading traditional texts, such as folktales, fables, myths, and legends. They will learn to compare themes, settings, characters, and plots in texts by the same author. WRITING: Students will begin to draft narrative writing pieces. First, they will learn how to adapt a fairy tale. After that, they will create their own original fairy tale. SCIENCE: Students will investigate how people use natural resources to meet their wants and needs. MATH: Students will apply what they have learned about multiplication, addition, division, and subtraction to solve two-step word problems. In order to be proficient, students must use a letter to represent an unknown in all positions of the problem. SOCIAL STUDIES: Students will learn how people acquire goods and services. After that, they will learn how to create a budget and weigh opportunity costs. HOME EXTENSIONS: Matific Montgomery County now offers Matific accounts for all 3rd grade students. Your child can login at home and have access to the same resources we use in class. SPOTLIGHT ON ACADEMICS Our Thinking and Academic Success Skills (TASS) for Marking Period 4 are:
FLEXIBILITY -Being open and responsive to new and diverse ideas and strategies and moving freely among them
INTELLECTUAL RISK TAKING -Accepting uncertainty or challenging the norm to reach a goal
READING: Early in the marking period, students compare the structure of poems, plays, and prose and describe the similarities and differences. Students also discuss the author’s use of similes and metaphors to add description to writing. Students are now working on identifying an author’s claim and supporting evidence. WRITING: During marking period 4, students use the writing process to compose poetry and research and publish an informative piece about a social studies or science topic. SCIENCE: Students begin the understanding that Earth materials can be studied to provide evidence of Earth’s changing surface over time by identifying, describing, and comparing observable properties of matter. Students apply these properties specifically to rocks. MATH: Students will be introduced to angles as geometric shapes and recognize an angle that turns through of a circle as a one-degree angle. Students extend understandings about composing whole numbers by combining ones and composing fractions by combining unit fractions to understand that angle measure is additive and angles are composed of one-degree angles; these understandings are used to solve addition and subtraction problems involving unknown angle measures. SOCIAL STUDIES: Study in marking period 4 begins with a focus on the structure of government in Maryland. Students explore the Maryland State Constitution to discover the democratic values and principles it includes. They examine the Office of the Governor, the structure and function of the Maryland General Assembly, and the importance of the Maryland Court of Appeals to learn about roles of Maryland state government officials, what state government can and cannot do, and some of the services the Maryland state government provides.
Fifth Grade
Welcome to April and (soon-to-be) marking period 4!
In reading, students will be analyzing text structures
of various informational texts. As always, students
will be learning reading strategies that will support
them when reading a variety of texts.
Students will be following a series of lessons in order
to write their own personal memoirs. One memoir
from each class will be chosen by the 5th grade
teachers to be read at the 5th grade promotion
ceremony.
Math is going to be very busy and diverse this
quarter! We will apply multiplication strategies and
place value reasoning to multiply and divide
decimals. We will teach these concepts through the
use of word problems and reasoning. We will tie
these skills in with measurement in the customary
and metric systems. Finally, we will end the marking
period with coordinate graphing, geometry, and
algebra! *Please continue to support students in
studying multiplication and division facts at home!
In science, we will study cells and heredity by
examining the characteristics of plant and animal
cells using microscopes. Please remember to submit
the permission form for Family Life and Human
Sexuality and Disease Prevention and Control by
May 1, 2016. Instruction will begin in May. If you
need another form, please contact your child’s
teacher.
In social studies, our focus is on economics. We will
examine how goods and services in Maryland have
evolved due to the impact of technological changes.
This will lead us into financial literacy and financial
decision making (spending, saving, & sharing).

Please keep in mind that we have a field trip to
the University of Maryland on Friday, April 21st. This is a FREE field trip! Please turn in field trip
permission slips as soon as possible! We also
need chaperones, so please consider joining us on
the field trip. Spaces are limited for chaperones.
If you are interested, there is a mandatory
training you must complete. Once completed, you
must print out the certificate and turn it in to the
front office prior to the field trip.
