Book Review: The Legend of Sander Grant by Marc PhillipsGIANT LEAPS

    - David Torkelson

I just nished the book TheLegend of Sander Grant (cover atleft), by the talented Marc Phillips.Wow! Its his rst novel, and if I werea betting man, Id wager that it will befar from his last.

Marc has showcased severalamazing photojournalistic works inprevious Galveston Wizard Periodicals

(online at www.galvestonwizard.com),so we knew he had talent.Suddenly, (to us, not him) he

had written a novel, and I felt com-pelled to do a book report, introducingit to you, our readers, and to also checkit out for myself rsthand.

I could only assume that thisunique work of ction would, if any-thing, serve as a welcome departurefrom my own daily grind.

As we all do, I had a lot going

on in my life, working 60 hours a weekto bring stability back to my life andwork here in Galveston, and serving tohelp myself and fellow Galvestoniansin their efforts to do big things.

We all have chores to do, dead-lines to meet, and a drive within us thatpush us to do bigger and better things.Time is ying by, however, for it seemsthat we were children only yesterday,

and tomorrow we may fade away. Were all learning from eachother, our family, and from our envi-ronment, and theres nothing like a re-spawning island to bring the pressureto make diamonds out of us all herenow. We are all so very talented, giftedin different areas of expertise, giantsin the (is)land ourselves.

So what started as an obliga-tion and impending deadline to reportmy ndings to you turned into a wel-

come departure from my hectic schedule, forcing me sit or lay down anread this book at hand. This was arguably the best thing that could have happened to me, transporting me from mwork into the oversized work boots ogiant Sander Grant, a giant from a longline of giants.

Our storys hero nds himselin search of where he comes from, wh

he is what he is, and what the futureholds for him. Whats it like to be larger than life for the books main character? What is going on in his oversizebrain? What destiny awaits him?

We could sit here and type alabout the story, and what happens, owe could just encourage you to go towww.marcphillips.net, nd and purchase a copy, and discover for yourselfCongratulations, Marc, and well done

    Hello everybody, The Outsider

Its funny how the constants in life

ways there, but we dont notice themthey smack us in the face...and Ive

l the smacks I can take this year.

    Until recently, death came only

and there in my life. For instance, an

or a musician I like dies of an over-

before their time, or someone I grew

atching on TV passes from natural

    s. Now that Im older I know too that

    Grandparents and their friends time

shorter each year. But when death

ed to stay a while, thats when things

    et overwhelming.

My wife, daughter, niece, and I

on our way back from the beach on

est end, where we had a really niceMy niece was visiting for the week-

We dont all get to hang out that often,

s was special for all of us. We were

bout back to the seawall when we see

man holding a baby is trying to wave

someone for help. I pulled to the side

oticed her crying, yelling in Spanish,

ing to the shing hole on the other

f the wreaths. I start to walk in that

ion to see others by the water also

g and pointing. I run to the waters

and a man is pointing in the water. At

ll I see is water, then I see him. Before

think, my body threw itself into the

Im swimming toward the man, whoe down, and all I can see is the back

head and shoulders. As I get closer,

my mind is racing. (How long has he been

in there? Did they nd him or is he with

them? What am I going to see when I iphim over?) My mind could do all the think-

ing it wanted, but my body was on auto

pilot. I gabbed him and ipped him over.

He was bluish-red, but that was it. Another

guy went in the water with me. Its a good

thing, because swimming dead weight to

the shore is harder than it looks on TV. We

got him to the shore and did CPR until the

EMS got there. We found out in the news

article the next day that he did not make it.

I told my mom later, and she said

that I was a hero. I said no, thats just what

youre supposed to do. I didnt know how

to feel about it. I didnt feel good or bad, it

just was. I did all I could. I thought, and thatwas all I could do, and so I started to feel o.k.

about it. I told myself that if I was that guy,

and he did what I did for him for me, that I

would have no hard feelings. But that was

    only the start.

A month or so later my wifes

niece (who is more like her sister and has

been raised by my mother in-law most of

her life) came to stay the summer with us.

She came to spend time with us, get out of

the house, see the beach, get some sun, and

to relax. She also came because my mother

in-law was going to have surgery, and she

didnt want to put her through the worry of

her mom/grandmas recovery. The surgery was fairly serious, but

her age and other health problems made it

more so. We were all optimistic when she

went in for the surgery. It was hours before

we had any news. Then we got word that

the surgery was over and she was in recov-

ery. After a while we got to see her, andthough she was in a lot of pain, she looked

good. Her color was good and all that was

left was to take it easy and heal. By the

third day she was ready to go home. But

the morning she was to be released from

the hospital, it wasnt till the late afternoon

that they got around to it. During that time,

on my way to the store, my wife called in

hysterics, so much that all I could under-

stand was I need you! I rushed to the hos-

pital to nd my wife sobbing by herself on

a bench out front. I had no idea what was

wrong, but I gured her mom had taken a

turn for the worst. All I could do was hold

her while she cried. Then she dropped thebomb.

She said that her best friend had

died of cardiac arrest the night before. She

was our age, with some health issues, but

I would have never guessed this. It took

some time to really believe it. I thought it

was a mistake or a bad joke, but no such

luck. She was gone. My wife is strong for

everyone who cant be, and Im there for

her when she cant be strong for herself.

For the next few days it was a lot of cry -

ing and laughing and then more crying.

Then, just when you think that its over and

death is gone for a while, Knock knock.

We still had my mother in-law tolook after, so my wife focused on her to

keep her mind occupied and getting her

well again. She went everyday she could

and did all the things that she could do

My mother in-law by this time should have

been getting better, but she was not feeling

better. This was the day after my mother in

law went home and the day after my wife

friend had passed. My wife had left he

moms house and was almost to the cause

way when her sister in-law called and sai

she needed to come back to her moms. She

turned around, and by the time she got back

they were loading her mom in the car an

taking her to the emergency room. She los

consciousness at the hospital and never woke

up. She was hooked up to machines for a da

and a half, then she just slipped away.

So we cry and laugh and remembe

the good, trying to forget the bad, letting

things run their course. Some are angry

some blame themselves or others. It makeyou reect on the title question, how doe

it make you feel? I dont know. Everyone

has there own way of dealing. I like to thin

if that person was watching me, how woul

they want me to be? Crying for days on end

angrily punching walls or people that ha

nothing to do with it? Or rather, living ever

day to its fullest and helping people, not jus

    passing them by.

I didnt think I would have apositiv

way to end this, but you know the saying

Dont smash a window without kicking

in a door or something like that? Weve

learned that another little outsider is on the

way to bring our spirits up, reminding uthat life happens, just not always the wa

    we want or expect.

EATH. (Hows that make you feel?)

    In the aftermath of Hurricane

    Ike, a group of Galveston

    Island residents formed a

    small group to help revitalize

    and improve the quality of

    island life by encouraging

    artists to relocate and call

    Galveston home. The

name of this group is Artist

    Homestead Galveston

    Island. AHGI

The island has a large and

    varied stock of available

    housing suitable for a

    combination of living and

    studio space. The key is

    pricing. On a relative basis,

    Galveston real estate can

    offer artists currently living

    and working in high cost

    locales, the opportunity

    to either reduce costs

    or expand their quarters.

    Relocating artists will nd a

    well established and growing

    art community situated only

    50 miles from the nations

    fourth largest city.

    The mission statement of

    AHGI is to revitalize

    Galvestons deteriorating

    historic neighborhoods by

    promoting home ownership

    by visual and performing

    artists and those in the

    arts related professions.

    A marketing campaign

    and referral network will

    showcase Galvestons

    unique lifestyle opportunities

    with the goal of encouraging

    artists to relocate to

    Galveston Island-thereby

    contributing to its livability

    and cultural diversity,

    enhancing its desirability

    as a visitor destination, and

    rehabilitating its historic

    housing stock.

    AHGI is an all volunteer

    effort operating without

    government funding and

    independent of governmental

    controls. This enables

    the group to streamline

    its activities and to move

    quickly unencumbered by

    bureaucratic review process.

    An example of this was

the ability to go live with a

    comprehensive website in

    only six weeks.

    The organization is now

    actively soliciting artists

    nationally. The marketing

    effort is designed to lead

    to those interested to the

    website. If there is sufcien

interest for an artist to contac

    AHGI, a systemized follo

    up operation is implemented

    including on island hosting

    by local artists.

    Anyone interested in this

    project can contact

    through our website.

    If you know anyone who

    might be interested in

he new face of healthcare Alternative Medicine`Why is the practice of Acupuncture and

ntal Medicine sweeping this country like a

m? The wave of change is happening acrossountry because people are experiencing realfts in their lives and in their health through thisnt healthcare system. The National Institute

Health and the World Health Organizationsanctioned the use of acupuncture to treat50 specifc conditions or diagnoses.

The practice of acupuncture, herballements, mental and physical exercises, cinal foods/diet, and lifestyle changes, odies the precepts that make Orientalcine holistic or, that which treats the whole

on: mind, body, & spirit. With a history ofe than 5,000 years, treating billions of people, ancient practice attempts to cure disease in

arly, more subtle stages rather than wait forndition to get so severe it may require harshnatives such as pharmaceuticals, surgery,

radiation &/or chemotherapy, or hospitalization. This system of healthcare balances the

bodys circulatory system by manipulating thebodys subtle energy. This subtle energy is called Qi(Chee). It courses through the body in specifcchannels called meridians. When the Qi, or VitalEnergy, is either blocked or defcient, problems

will begin to arise somewhere in the mind or body.Acupuncture opens the channel from blockage orflls the channel when defcient depending on thenature of the disease or condition.

Acupuncture is certainly worth trying formany conditions especially if modern medicinehas not worked or if your medical doctor doesnot have a good answer as to the exact cause andcure for your condition. This may be a good signthat a disease process has not manifested itself in

to a more serious condition for which the doctorcan see, thereby affording acupuncture theopportunity to work for you.
