15. "Many happy returns"—^March

A pretty blond tell me about going out to dinner with an editor. When the waiter took down the order the editor ptdled a blue pencil and crossed out half of it.

Three weeks ago the groundhog saw his shadow. Whether he saw it or not we knew there were six mcH^ weeks on winter. Today is the half-way post ^ of that six weeks. Three more—^not bad if they are all like Wednesday.

I often have a desire to pry into the private life of a doctor to leam how he is always able to smile in spite of the added opposition the heavy snows place in front of him as he goes on his errands of mercy. • * *

Even without the snow handi-cap I wonder how he keeps him-self fit to care for regular patients—plus emergencies. Does a doctor ever deep?

From my experience with illness I can't imagpe how a doctor ever takes off his clothes and <dimbs peacefully into bed. Tliose I know seem to be going all the time—no road too impassable, no home too remote, no hour too in-convenient, no need but he makes his best effort to meet.

Does he ever become tired of listening to the pains and aches? Or does he love to listen to an-other's troubles and forget his own? What is the secret of his motility? Does he smile because he knows a frown in the sick room would undo more than his best medicine can cure?

» * * How many of us realize the

ability, the work, the worry, the physical fatigue which overtake the doctor? Yet he greets us with a smile and a genuine inter-est in the well being of every human he meets.

needed the free-thinking courage she passed on to us*. We, the ones who wait, must retain it and save it for the boys when they come home. It is our best way to thank all those school boys who have paid the price of its glory.

Dear Mountaineer: I wish an award might be made

to our English teacher in the Margaretville high school of a few years ago. I recall her saying, "The Psalms comprise some of the most beautiful poetry in the world." She made desire to grow up in spirit like her.

She made us believe we could go as far as we wanted because we were Americans. We were more than kids learning to read, we were a free-thinking people. We talked life, death, war, philoso-phy.

« * * * Today my husband sails across

the ocean. Many mischievous lads who sat in that teacher's classroom have given their brave lives. Hie foreboding smoke we discussed in class has broken into a gruesome monotony. The gal-lantry and courage of that teacher have been exemplified in the deeds of her brave pupils.

The deer which a game protector killed near Big Indian recently-in the belief the animal was suffering tuberculosis led me to spend a few hours investigating the rec-ords of deer definitely known to have been so affected. ^ * * *

The first sudi deer was killed near Windsor, Bcoome county, in the faU of 1933. A bit later, dur-ing the legal season, a hunter re-ported to a game protectbr that he had killed a buck in very poor condition. The carcass, was sent to the state pathologist at Albany; * * *

Here it was found the lungs were stuck fast to the ribs much as in the manner of cattle badly infected. Another TB deer was reported in 1936 and two in 1937. None has been reported since. I am anxious to leam the final tests on the Big Indian deer.

Bovine TB has been much re-duced in 20 years and I wonder if this in any way affected the deer. Due to the fact it occurs so rarely in deer it cannot be called a mem ace to the deer herd. There must be affected animals who are killed by dogs or predators and never reported.

I sat beautiful last Sunday on a mountainside overlooking a handsome Catskill scene when a movement in thQ, brush nearby attracted by attention. At first I could not ascertain the cause but finally was able to make out the form of a- deer feeding on the bare ground and brush in the vicinity of a spring run.

It appeared to be a yearling fawn. It worked its way slowly toward me, pausing to nibble on brush and pawing through snow to get at tender grass. It occa-sionally gave a soft bleat not un-like the sound made by a young crow.

It spent five nmutes eating buds of a scrub apple tree not more than 100 feet distant and though it looked many times in my direction did not seem to be conscious of my presence. * * *

I tried a very low 'Tj^" The little deer looked quickly around but did not see me. I repeated the call. It answered and came toward me for a few feet, then stopped and glanced about. * * *

Just as the creature was turn-ing its head toward me again along came one of those tiny whirlwinds, often seen in the open. The wind carried my scent to the beautiful wild creature. For the first time it seemed to see me, looked directly into my eyes for a moment, then whirled* and with 20-foot bounds disappeared in the brush.

I got doym and found the deer had been 14 normal steps from where I stood when it discovered me. Later in the day and a mile or more farther on I discovered the remains of a deer. It had "been killed the day before by dogs. * * *

I followed back along the dog tracks and found the dogs had brought the deer (a good-sized buck) down in the snow near the top of the mountain. It . had broken away and made a dozen great leaps down the mountainside before 'the dogs again caught it in the deep snow. This time they drew blood. Fully 200, yards on dcrwn the mountainside they had killed the hands(Hne creature. * * *

were hamstrung, its skin tipped off in a dozen places, one ear was entirely chewed off.

This budc Was only one of many which have met a similar fate since the hard crust came upon the deep snoWs. An Arena man saw seven dogs running together while he was cutting firewood. A truckman stoned five dogs away from an exhausted deer which had taken refuge in the open waters of fte Delaware.

There is a simple solution to the dog problem. It would be for dog owners to keep their pets tied or otherwise home during the latter part of the winter when the deer come down low on the mountain-sides. This would save many deer.

» » • The law permits anyone to kill

a dog running deer in the Catsldll park. Law enforcement officers may kill dogs running at large most of the year. Protectors and other officers have told me they would much appreciate a phone call when stray dogs are seen. These dogs often coax good pet and cow dogs away. They soon become killers.

A game protector told me re-cently that generally the public cooperates very well. But the day I saw him he had contacted ten dog owners and requested they keep their dogs in while the snow was deep. Only one thanked him for so doing. The others were emphatic their pets were deer •proof. Half of the folk he ap-proached were as. much offended as* tiioUgh he had slapped one of their children.

Another day I went along with him when he was working on dog complaints. He stopped at five places where the total dog popula-tion was 15— not more than four in any one home. Two houses had two dogs each, most of them li-censed. It was certainly a doggy neighborhood.
