INTRODUCTION

About Gallery 1855 Gallery 1855 supports visual artists, craftspeople and designers to present their work in a professional environment. The aim of this visual arts facility is to enrich the cultural life of our City and the cultural identity of our northern region. Gallery 1855 is an iconic building and is primarily heritage listed.

The Gallery has flexible display options for a variety of visual art, craft and design works. It is equipped with a hanging system and has a range of plinths for 3D artwork. The Gallery also accommodates multi-component installation artworks.

Applications to exhibit at Gallery 1855 on a hire basis are welcome from early career and established artists. However, applications are subject to a selection process.

Opening hoursGallery 1855 is open Wednesday to Saturday from 12- 5pm and is primarily staffed by volunteers. The gallery is closed on public holidays.

Exhibition hire inclusions

• Hire of gallery for 4-5 weeks (adjusted during the Christmas/New Year period or other times of the year)

• Electronic invitations• Artwork List (aka Price List)• Advertising for exhibitions will occur

on Gallery 1855’s webpage on Council’s website

• Promotion via Council’s mailing list• Exhibition installation management• Exhibition launch catering (supplied by

Council’s designated supplier)• If required, PA system for launch• Social media promotion on Facebook

and Instagram• In-situ artwork insurance (applies to

artwork on display in Gallery 1855 only)

EXHIBITION INFORMATION

Exhibition space Cost

Whole gallery $470

Deposit to secure exhibition booking 50% non-refundable deposit

Storage fee - exhibition pieces not collected after an exhibition within agreed time frame

$12 per item per day

Additional fees Fee

Commission on sale of exhibition pieces 30% +GST on the commission

Exhibition options and costsIndividual artists or groups of artists may hire Gallery 1855 in its entirety.

Hirers’ exhibitions are normally four to five weeks in length, depending on the time of year.

Artwork sales

• Works may be for sale at the artist’s discretion. If the work is sold, up to 60 working days after the City of Tea Tree Gully has been paid for the work in full, the artist will be forwarded the price paid by the buyer for the sold work, less the commission of 30% of the retail price of the work, plus Goods and Services Tax (GST) on top of the commission

Exhibitor responsibilities

• The responsibilities will be outlined in the Exhibition Agreement.

ARTAG considers each application on its own merit and the selection criteria will be based upon:• Quality or artistic merit of the artwork

(based on images supplied by applicant)• Presentation of an engaging and coherent

body of work suitable for exhibition and City of Tea Tree Gully residents

• Diversity of art forms, artists and exhibition concepts, to achieve a varied annual exhibition program

• Suitability for the location (this can include technical or technological restrictions)

• Amount of artworks proposed for display• Experience of the artist, based on

applicant’s Curriculum Vitae (CV)• Proposed exhibition concept or theme

Exhibition selection process

• Applications are considered on an ongoing basis

• The Artists Round Table Advisory Group (ARTAG), chaired by a City of Tea Tree Gully employee reserves the right to reject any artwork in line with the selection criteria and Council’s Art Display and Exhibition Policy

• Successful exhibitors will be notified by telephone, confirmed in writing and issued with an Exhibition Agreement

SELECTION AND EXHIBITOR RESPONSIBILITIES

APPLICATION PROCESS

The following must be included as attachments to your online application form:

• Artist statement (50-150 words) describing your creative practice

• An exhibition outline (150-250 words) describing what will be exhibited, what the exhibition is about (your themes and ideas) and include who will be participating in your exhibition (is there more than one artist?)

• CV (maximum one page per artist)• Print-quality JPEG images of your artwork

(file size per image 3-6MB). Five digital images for an individual application and 10 digital images for a group application. Images may be supplied on a USB with your application if you are unable to upload them online

• An artwork image list must accompany the images, indicating:

- Image file name and image number - Artist name - Title of artwork - Materials - Dimensions - Date the artwork was produced

Online applications are preferred. Apply online at cttg.sa.gov.au/gallery1855 However if you are unable to submit your application online, please contact the Arts and Cultural Officer for assistance.
