6 I marvel that you are turning away so soon from Him who called you in the grace of Christ, to a different gospel, 7 which is not another; but there are some who trouble you and want to pervert the gospel of Christ. 8 But even if we, or an angel from heaven, preach any

other gospel to you than what we have preached to you, let him be accursed. 9 As we have said before, so now I say again, if anyone preaches any other gospel to you than what you have received, let him be accursed.

THE DOCTRINE OF THE CHURCH (PT. II)II Timothy 3:14-17

Doctrine Of The Church We are in the midst of a series of

lessons designed to help us recognize the church of the New Testament

In a world where there is a church building on every corner, how do we know which church is the church Jesus built?

Page 5: Galatians 1:6-9 (NKJV)

Doctrine Of The Church Last week we began part 1 of a

lesson on what the doctrine of the NT church should be

We looked at the inspiration of the scriptures, as well as whether or not they are still relevant today

So this morning we continue with this study

Page 6: Galatians 1:6-9 (NKJV)

Another Testament? What about creeds, testaments, or

other guide books besides the Bible? Can these bind rules and laws upon

us that God never did through His word?

Should we adopt and practice these doctrines that we do not find in God’s word?

Page 7: Galatians 1:6-9 (NKJV)

Another Testament? Paul stated very clearly that we are not

to accept any other gospel than what has already been taught (Gal. 1:6-9)

If someone teaches something that is contrary to what we read in scriptures, who do we believe?

God is not sending forth a new message

Page 8: Galatians 1:6-9 (NKJV)

Another Testament? All through the Bible we see

evidence that God’s word is to be our only source of instruction in spiritual matters

Moses reminded the Israelites to keep God’s commands as He had instructed and not to add to the word or take from it (Deut. 4:1-2; 12:32)

Page 9: Galatians 1:6-9 (NKJV)

Another Testament? “Every word of God is pure…Do not

add to His words, lest He rebuke you, and you be found a liar” (Prov. 30:5-6)

It is presumptuous to add to the word of God

It means that we think we know and understand the mind of God (Is. 55:8-9)

Page 10: Galatians 1:6-9 (NKJV)

Another Testament? Jesus was often upset with the

Pharisees Many think it was because they

followed and kept the law too stringently

It was actually because they added to the word of God and followed their “traditions” more than God’s actual law (Matt. 15:6-9)

Page 11: Galatians 1:6-9 (NKJV)

Another Testament? Notice where the Bereans went to test

the doctrine of Paul and Silas (Acts 17:10-11)

They went to the Scriptures Why? Paul commands that we not go (think)

beyond what is written (I Cor. 4:6)

Doctrine Of Christ There are some basic doctrines that

should be taught in the church of the NT

These come directly from the word of God

These basic doctrines are derived from the fact that God’s word is our one and only source of truth

Page 13: Galatians 1:6-9 (NKJV)

Doctrine Of Christ God is the creator of the universe

and all that is in it (Gen. 1:1) The Godhead (trinity) is made up of

the Father, Son and the Holy Spirit (Gen. 1:26; I Jn. 5:7)

The Bible is the word of God and is our only source of truth (II Tim. 3:16-17)

Page 14: Galatians 1:6-9 (NKJV)

Doctrine Of Christ All are sinners and are in need of

salvation (Rom. 3:23) Salvation is a free gift from God (Rom.

6:23; Eph. 2:8) We must accept the terms of salvation

which include faith, confession, repentance, and baptism (Heb. 11:6; Mk. 16:16; Acts 2:38; 8:37)

Page 15: Galatians 1:6-9 (NKJV)

Doctrine Of Christ We are to worship God in spirit

and truth upon the first day of the week (Jn. 4:23-24; Acts 20:7)

Christians should observe the Lord’s Supper, sing, pray, hear the word of God and give (Acts 20:7; I Cor. 16:1-2; Col. 3:16; I Thess. 5:17)

Page 16: Galatians 1:6-9 (NKJV)

Doctrine Of Christ Marriage is between one man and

one woman and is for life; the only exception for divorce/remarriage is adultery (Matt. 19:1-9; Rom. 7:1-3)

Christ is the head of the church and savior of the body (Eph. 1:22-23; 5:23; Col.1:18); elders are the shepherds (Acts 20:28; Titus 1:5-9; I Pet. 5:1-4)
