LETTER FROM THE CHAIR OF THE BOARD & PRINCIPALIt is our great pleasure to welcome you to Appleby College’s 2016 Gala Shaken, Not Stirred!

An event of this scale and sophistication is made possible only when supported by tireless individuals who are passionate about its cause – our School. Thank you to Honourary Chair Baillie Howard, Gala Co-Chairs, Gala committee members and the numerous parent and employee volunteers for their dedication and commitment to creating such a spectacular evening.

The support received by our donors and sponsors is also very much appreciated – from the live and silent auction items to gifts-in-kind. Their contributions are greatly valued and play an important role in the success of Shaken, Not Stirred.

As we celebrate together this evening, we also have the opportunity to help further two very important areas of the School: Financial Assistance and the building of new Athletics & Performing Arts Spaces.

We believe it is part of our mission to make an Appleby education available to outstanding students from diverse socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds, creating a diverse and talented community that benefits all of our students. On an annual basis, approximately 120 Appleby students receive some form of financial assistance (bursaries, loans and/or scholarships). It is our intent to increase the scale of our Financial Assistance Programme to 25 percent over the next decade.

We also believe that a world-class education requires exceptional facilities. Over the past two years we have been in the planning stages for the next major additions to Appleby – Athletics & Performing Arts Spaces. The new Athletics complex will add approximately 40 percent to the floor area of the School and will include three gyms and a 1,000 seat auditorium, with a new 300-plus seat performing arts space located in the old gym area. Additional details on both initiatives can be found on pages 82-86.

I hope you are as excited as we are with what the future holds for Appleby. Thank you for joining us this evening.

Malcolm Butterfield Chair, Board of Governors

Innes van Nostrand Principal

LETTER FROM THE HONOURARY CHAIRThank you for joining us for Appleby’s 2016 Gala Shaken, Not Stirred. We have an exciting evening of action befitting a Double-0 Agent on Her Majesty’s Secret Service planned for you. From the exciting Bond-themed décor, to exquisitely prepared gourmet foods, and of course, the spectacular jazz music of celebrated Canadian singer Matt Dusk. All-in-all, tonight is a night you won’t soon forget!

As Honourary Chair, I’ve had the great pleasure of working alongside an incredible committee of parent volunteers whose creative vision have made this evening possible. Thank you to our Gala Co-Chairs Alix Blum, Caroline Fleury, Gracia Gu, Kathy Mueller, Katie Murray, Sarah Perkin, Joanne Ross-Keizer, Cheryl Smith, Ann Watkin and Vera Zhao. This year’s Gala committee was also supported by a number of Appleby employees who dedicated their time and talents to ensuring the success of tonight’s celebration. We are incredibly grateful for their guidance and expertise.

Included in this catalogue is everything you need to know about the festivities prepared for Shaken, Not Stirred. Of course, in true Bond style, a few surprises are also in store. I encourage you to review the many extraordinary items profiled in the live and silent auction sections. You won’t want to miss out on the opportunity to bid on the amazing culinary, travel and entertainment items that have been arranged for you.

Please know that by attending Shaken, Not Stirred, and the generous contributions that will be made during the course of the evening, you are helping support two transformational School initiatives: Appleby’s Financial Assistance Programme, and the building of new Athletics & Performing Arts Spaces, which will play an important role in enhancing the Appleby experience for students.

Thank you for your support and enjoy the evening!

Baillie Howard Honourary Chair, ACPA President 2014–2016

TABLESIDE GAMESHEADS & TAILS

This is always a highlight of the Appleby College Gala. This year, guests will have the chance to win a wonderful prize donated by M.A. Diamonds & Jewellery. All you have to do is participate for your chance to win a beautiful 3.73 carat modified octagon Pink Tourmaline, valued at $5,400 – a perfect gift for Mother’s Day.

GAME RULES

• Listen for the cue to play, everyone will be asked to stand.

• On the count of three, each participant puts their hands on their “head” or on their “tail.”

• The auctioneer flips a coin and announces heads or tails.

• Those who have their hands on the correct corresponding body part are still in the game and remain standing; the others sit down to watch the rest of the game.

• The auctioneer then starts another round, asking the remaining participants to place their hands on their “head” or on their “tail.” The coin is flipped and elimination continues. The last person standing is declared the winner.

NEEDS-BASED FINANCIAL AID & SCHOLARSHIPSThe history of financial aid at Appleby College is as old as the school itself. According to anecdotal stories and information from the archives, a number of the school’s earliest students received financial support either through the waiving of tuition, or by one family paying another family’s fees. In those days the process was informal and much less structured than it is today, but the purpose was the same, to provide outstanding students who otherwise could not afford it the opportunity to pursue an education that excites and challenges them.

WHY IS FINANCIAL AID IMPORTANT?We believe an Appleby education should be accessible to outstanding students of all socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds. We work hard to identify exceptional students who would both benefit from an Appleby education, as well as make a positive contribution to school life. Providing financial aid not only benefits the students and their families, it benefits and enriches all of us - our students, our school and our community. Financial aid and merit-based scholarships also allow us to identify and admit students with exceptional talents such as a great scholar, a virtuoso musician or a gifted multi-sport athlete, creating a wonderfully diverse and talented community.

“RECURRENT” VERSUS “ENDOWED” FUNDINGAppleby’s Financial Assistance Programme is currently funded in part through “recurrent” or “endowed” support. Our benefactors contribute their gift in one of these two ways. Their choice may be based on personal preferences, the length of time they hope to support Appleby and how they want their donation to be managed. Both recurrent and endowed support allows Appleby to reach its goals. When we receive a gift, an agreement is formed between the benefactor and Appleby. Approved “restrictions” ensure the funds are used in accordance with the donor’s wishes. The following is a breakdown of what it means to support Appleby through recurrent versus endowed gifts:

83

Recurrent Funding – A benefactor offers support for a specific purpose over a finite period of time. Sums are regularly disbursed from this original amount until it is exhausted.

Endowed Funding – A gift is invested in perpetuity from which regular investment earnings accrue. A portion of these earnings are directed towards purposes agreed upon by the donor and Appleby.

Appleby’s stated strategic goal is to increase the proportion of students receiving needs-based financial aid from the current 16% to 25%. (The assumption being that we move from 124 receiving Financial Aid at an average of $30,000 per annum to 190 students receiving Financial Aid at the same level).

This objective is likely to be achieved with a mixture of recurrent gift support and gifts for endowment.

ATHLETICS & PERFORMING ARTS SPACESAppleby’s Co-Curricular Programme has been at the core of the student experience since the school’s inception. Whether on the playing fields, the stage or in the local community, the lessons learnt through our Co-Curricular Programme have been more than a mere extension of the classroom, they have formed a vital part of the educational experience we have offered. As was the case over 100 years ago, today all of our 760 students engage daily in co-curricular activities whether it be athletics, the arts or service.

However, in striving to continuously improve the quality of the learning experiences we provide our students we are faced with some real challenges, most noticeably in terms of space. In the Fall and Spring many of our athletics co-curricular activities take place outdoors, but in the winter or on days when the weather is bad, we face a considerable shortage of indoor space to conduct practices or play games, especially for sports such as basketball, volleyball, badminton and others. This has required the school to make compromises such as limiting practice time, renting off-campus facilities, and restricting the range of recreational, instructional and intermural programs we are able to offer.

A similar situation prevails for the arts and in particular in the area of artistic and performance space. The arts are one of the great hallmarks of the Appleby experience, providing students with the opportunity for creativity and self-expression while giving them a different aesthetic sense and instilling an appreciation that will last a lifetime. While we currently have dedicated artistic space, it is increasingly insufficient to meet the growing needs and interests of our students.

The shortage of indoor space has also created other challenges for the school in the areas of community and academic life. Recently, we reintroduced the practice of weekly whole-school assemblies. Run entirely by the student leadership team, these gatherings provide students with a sense of community and belonging, and are an opportunity to enhance overall school spirit and pride. Today, these assemblies take place in our 1950s era gymnasium with students sitting on the floor. Clearly not an optimum venue or setting.

85

In recognition of these challenges, Appleby’s Board of Governors earlier this year approved a plan to design and construct new athletics and performing arts spaces on the eastern side of the campus, immediately adjacent to our existing buildings. Working with a team of architects from Perkins + Will – including an Appleby alumnus – the new spaces will include:

1. The addition of a first class, competitive “double gym”.

2. Upgraded training and fitness areas, locker rooms and related classroom facilities.

3. A third gym that converts to a 1,000 seat auditorium for whole school assemblies, parent and alumni events.

4. The conversion of the existing gym into a performing arts theatre for music and drama with 300+ seats.

THE IMPACT OF THIS PROJECTThe construction of this new building will have a profound impact on our students’ educational experience as it will;

1. Add approximately 40% more space to the floor area of the school (excluding the residences).

2. Create many additional learning spaces; 3 gyms rather than one, smaller specialist areas for yoga, martial arts and fitness, a 1,000 seat auditorium and a 300+ seat performing arts theatre, as well as an atrium or gathering place for receptions, meetings and exhibitions.

3. Additional space for community activities, informal study or for students to just simply ‘hang out’.

THE IMPACT ON ATHLETICS1. Expanded and improved instructional, recreational and intramural

programs for all students.

2. Significantly improved capacity and better locations for team practices.

3. Ability to host more intercollegiate games and tournaments.

4. The establishment and centralizing of high quality fitness and training facilities in one space which will allow improved training regimes and broader participation by all students.

5. Providing high profile opportunities to use athletics to build and promote school spirit and pride amongst students, employees, parents and alumni.

86

THE IMPACT ON THE ARTS1. Upon completion of the new athletics and auditorium building, the

current gym will be renovated to provide space for our students to act, sing or play music in a theatre designed for these purposes.

THE IMPACT ON COMMUNITY AND ACADEMIC LIFE1. Providing more appropriate and conducive space for all school meetings,

assemblies, and events in the auditorium gym.

2. Creating a stronger sense of community and ‘home’ by enhancing informal student space with the inclusion of the campus room as well as additional smaller learning spaces.

3. Enhancing community by providing three large scale locations for speakers, dances, and other special events.

4. The opportunity to celebrate and promote Appleby’s heritage in an alumni meeting room and in displays throughout the building.

5. Alleviating the crush on classroom space by adding additional classroom, study and break-out spaces.

6. Placing the College Shop in the heart of campus to further promote Appleby pride through the sale of branded merchandise.

7. New and increasing opportunities for community partnerships, summer programs and rentals.
